This promotional film for the Bofors 20 mm L/70 automatic gun shows the popular weapon mounted in an armored vehicle. This gun was a belt fed evolution of their previous 20 mm L/70 anti air gun, which was based on their classic 40 mm L/60 anti air gun. The weapon can be used as an anti-aircraft gun (used against helicopters and recon aircraft) and as an anti-personnel weapon.
As noted above, the weapon is a distant relative of the famous Bofors 40 mm L/60 anti air gun, often referred to simply as the Bofors gun. The 40 mm L/60 is an anti-aircraft/multi-purpose autocannon designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors. It was one of the most popular medium-weight anti-aircraft systems during World War II, used by most of the western Allies as well as by the Axis powers. A small number of these weapons remain in service to this day, and saw action as late as the Gulf War.
The history on the 20 mm cannon is this: during World War II, the Swedish air force lacked a belt fed 20 mm cannon. Bofors responded to this by developing the 20 mm L/70 automatic gun, in Swedish service known as the 20 mm autocannon m/45. This used the 20x110 Hispano Suiza cartridge and had a cyclic rate of fire of 725 rpm in aircraft configuration. The gun came too late to serve in the war but was used on the Saab 21 fighter aircraft past the A-1 model. The gun was very reliable and had a good rate of fire.
After the Saab 21 had left service Bofors bought up all remaining guns from the Swedish air force and developed an armored gun mount around it for use on armored vehicles. In this configuration the gun's rate of fire was reduced to 300 rpm to allow continiues fire on the ground without overheating. The 20 mm armored gun mount saw service in the Swedish army on the Pbv 301 infantry fighting vehicle, as featured in the video. The mount was also planned for the Swedish S-tank during its early development.
In this video the gun's fire rate has been restored to 725 rounds per minute as a selling point. The two projectiles types shown in the video are Bofors designs originally developed for the Swedish air force.
The high explosive projectile had the Swedish designation "20 mm mingranat m/52" (short: 20 mm mgr m/52) or "20 mm mine shell m/52" in English. It featured a 14 gram high explosive incendiary charge. Interestingly it was never fielded to the Swedish army for use on their Pbv 302 and is only featured in the video since Bofors owned the design.
The armored piercing projectile had the Swedish designation 20 mm spårljuspansarprojektil m/68 (short: 20 mm slpprj m/68) or 20 mm tracer armor projectile m/68 in English.

Wasn't it the 20 mm m/40 that was based at the same design as the 40 mm Bofors?
@@satanihelvetet yes, but the 20 mm m/45 was an evolution of the 20 mm m/40. However it shares very little with the original 40 mm design.
@@Blockhaj I thought the m/45 was an evolution of the Hispano Suiza...but maybe it was only the calibre 20x110 that was adopted from HS to Bofors m/45.
As I see, the m/40 with 20x145 was more sutible as AA and AT, were the m/45, m/47 was more suitible as arm in airplanes and vehicles.

Sweden built their own modified 38t tanks on license during WW2. When they became obsolete, they were later rebuilt into apcs since it was a pretty solid, well liked chassie. Some were also made into assault guns with a 105mm howitzer.

This hatch with arm was originally designed as a second arm for the 103 MBT, but was never used at the MBT in service.
It's a nice little gun.
I had the opportunity to use one during my military service and it was cool to observe everything disappear with the hits in line of fire.

Most likely yes since the APC (Pansarbandvagn 301) with the 20mm in question was in service with the Swedish military from 1961-1971

Bofors 20mm Mister. When you positively, absolutely, must see a spray of goo.
It is written the small turret the Gunner occupies and operates from is gas tight and later the film mentions that all gasses produced when firing are ejected overboard.
Does the mean to imply that the vehicle interior is "Positive Pressure" to ensure NO outside gasses, as may be employed during combat in a NBC environment, is employed whenever the vehicle is in operation?
The reason I point this out is because the empty shell ejection port doesn't seem to be sealed/enclosed when NOT in firing operation.
Small but important consideration for the crew/occupants.

the gun is compleatly outside of the vehicle there is no interior conection to the fighting compartement from the gun (source: im a swede)

Out of curiosity, how hot was the cartridge after it was ejected ? Wondering if it can ignite something if enough of them fall onto someone or something inside the hatch from the heat after firing.
It really depends on the cartridge. Small ones heat up faster, bigger ones don't. But I would say most cases after being ejected would be around the 350-400° F for a few seconds, brass tends to cool down very rapidly.
Funny how Sweden has been a neutral country since arounfd1775, but makes some of the best guns especially low-medium calibre AT and AA guns! They sent the Finns loads of 47MM AT guns during the winter war they made the Russian tanks look like mincemeat after hitting them.
Being neutral doesn't mean you don't need an army.
Quite the opposite, you need to show that you can defend yourself without the protection of more powerful allies.
In reality, during the cold war, Sweden would have sided with the western powers if it came to war between east and west. Everybody knew this, but the official policy was non-alliance.
Neutrality (as defined by international law) is something you can only declare in relation to a de-facto conflict.

Yes. The Swedes produced the 38t under licence as the m/41.
Yes it is. When the tank was out of service, it was reused as a base for the first tracked APC in the Swedish armed forces. This was both a experimental project as it in the same time was in service in the army. The PBV 301 was later replaced with PBV 302.

The turrets can still be found around airport/airbases, harbours and other instalations. 95% of them in none active/museum reserv status.

Gå in och kolla lite på Panzer 38T och Jg Pz 38T. Sverige har också sånna "Tyska stridsvagnar" och Panzer 38T är inte ens ett tyskt fordon. Byggt i landet brevid men använt av tyskland.

Nej sverige använde inte panzer 38t sverige använde Strv m/41 som är licenstillverkad i sverige med svensk bestyckning. Jag vet att Panzer 38 var byggd av skoda i Tjeckoslovakien men eftersom landet var under tysk ockupation så är det alltså en tyskbyggd stridsvagn och Jg Pz aka ''Hetzer'' verisionen var endast byggd i tyskland.
och eftersom man helt klart kan se soldater debarkera ur dörrar på fordonets baksida kan jag inte förstå hur du fortfarande kunde tro att det var en stridsvagn från en annan era.

This is ATV 301 (PBV 301) It was a miserable machine. It's predecessor PBV 302 was much better and was used for 50 years.

It was only planned as a temporary APC until the PBV 302 was ready. The chassi was based on an old (bad) tank, and the tracks were a constant source of problems. The didn't want to stay on. The cannon was a 20 mm canon from an airplane, but the rate of fire were downscaled for the 301. Crew compartment was much to small and the gearbox demanded that you had a left foot capable of pressing down serious amounts of pressure.
The 302 was not the predecessor.

Gliders had actually pretty good record during ww2, they were cheap and unlike paratroopers the soldiers were together and not spread out during landing and could also land heavier weapons than just paratroopers. Yeah there were accidents, but gliders were pretty important for several battles. However when helicopters came they pretty much had served their purpose.
