    I served in Peace Corps Kosovo--a lot of what these PCVs are saying rings true! We were told our deal was Posh Corps, but every placement has it's unique challenges. Peace Corps Volunteers are part of a special club. Love you all!

    The best Ambassadors of the USA to other nations of the world are not the politically connected wealthy Turist, who probably keep the government not at ease, preparing a military take over every now and then.
    I am one who enjoyed and benefited from the teachings of the peace corp volunteers, who worked hard for a pocket money. One made a basket ball court & have a competitive student teacher teams that attracted fans. He was a good player & his wife was the most deadly three pointers. Another built together with his student he help; a small brick house of a show case. It was to be used by the student until he graduates & was to go to the landlord.
    It was a great & unforgetable experience for them & for us. We loved & respected them & they lived in a relatively peaceful environment.
    THANKS

    Love this. I studied abroad in South Africa a couple years ago and am about to be in Colombia for Peace Corps. This is spot on with the resource allocation and how the problems of the world are not the same always as “your parents peace corps” thank you.

    As a Liberian Peace Corps volunteer... Ive learned that the local people had no desire to change... they had a great life...easy life. Who is it to say as a Peace Corps volunteer we should go to another country and try to change their way of life ? Myself....I was happy living their life !

      This is such a great insight. I watched a video from another UA-camr who did his service in Liberia and he was saying the same thing. Everyone was so happy with what they had. And he was more changed by the experience, instead of them being changed by his presence.

    As a former Peace Corps volunteer to Liberia Africa...... I soon learned " most " Peace Corps volunteers spend more time with other Peace Corps volunteers then the local people they came to help / serve. This is so sad ! The Peace Corps volunteer never learns to become part of the real life in the peoples life of that country !

    I watched the entire documentary, Thank you for making this! I was accepted into the Peace Corps Mozambique program a week ago! In the description section, it was mentioned that while modernity spreads to capitol cities, rural villages are often slow to develop due to cultural factors. With this being said, do you think a program similar to Peace Corps (which sends professionals from both developed and developing countries to rural areas in the U.S.) would be effective? Obviously no society is perfect, but could the U.S. also benefit from highly skilled volunteers around the world?

    My parents joined the PC in 1970. At that time PC accepted families with older children. I was 14 when the 3 of us left for Colombia. We lived there for our 2 years of service. I worked with a fellow PCV in our community, at an orphanage. Life changing is an understatement. I was 14 yrs old....

    It kind of is, a peace corps recruiter told me that 90 percent of those accepted are graduates with a 4 year degree, and that even with 5 years or more of work experience, that you have very low chances of being accepted as a volunteer. Then she sent me a list of volunteer programs that have less requirements. Oh well, guess some of us arent good enough to help. Seems pretty posh and arrogant to me.

      Thanks for watching Leslie. If you have a specific type of work you'd like to do during service, I would ask which countries have the best placements for that kind of work. The application process is getting better, but I hear it's still a bit cumbersome. Hang in there.

    Posh Corps seems to be relative to each situation as the volunteer on the coast said. I’m an RPCV Honduras ‘84-‘87. We thought PCVs in Costa Rica were in Posh Corps because they had running water and electricity. I thought my future wife was Posh Corps because she lived in the capital and had daily water and electricity and got a higher living allowance. Lol. It’s all relative.

    2 cents worth..........Very difficult to teach poetry where the students cannot identify with the subject of the poetry!!! Better to find things written by South African writers where the kids can envisage the landscape and the internal conversation of the poet. E. g. Wordsworth's daffodils, when students don't know a daffodil from a donkey is a waste of time IMHO. In these circumstances, why teach poetry at all? Maybe spend more time on English vocabulary and comprehension...............Very frustrating for students and teachers.

    • @alantothpeacecorpsvideo7198
      @alantothpeacecorpsvideo7198  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching Linda. Students in South Africa do read South African literature, but English language poetry is also in the curriculum. Often the assigned poems are beyond the language abilities of most students, but the students featured at the end of the film are a special advanced class at that school. They're preparing for national senior certificate exams and poetry is a part of the exam.

      lol funny u ask this now--a Black woman peace corps alum recently (w/i the last 2 weeks) told me that this corps changed her life, so im reconsidering after some time saying 'hell naw'. i did do an americorps service term that transformed me, though; highly recommend the domestic service domain of the corps world if you're still interested in a service-based experience + have qualms with imperialism lol@@rookas6274
