- "The Nightingale" is a meditation on the consequences of violence and the price of seeking vengeance. Set during the colonization of Australia in 1825, the film follows Clare (Aisling Franciosi), a 21-year-old Irish convict. Having served her 7-year sentence, she is desperate to be free of her abusive master, Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin), who refuses to release her from his charge. When British authorities fail to deliver justice after Hawkins commits a harrowing crime against Clare, she decides to pursue Hawkins and is forced to enlist the help of a young Aboriginal tracker Billy (Baykali Ganambarr). On their journey, they must learn to find empathy for one another, while weighing the true cost of revenge. Writer/director Jennifer Kent and star Ganambarr joined BUILD to have a conversation about the film.

Finally a movie that doesn't sugar coat the colonial experience. As a black person I find it very refreshing.
Baykali Ganambarr did such a great job we need to see him in more films.
I couldn't believe it when he said this is his first role. Man oh man, does this guy have some awards in his future!
in general more aboriginal actors need actual opportunities to act. and baykali was incredible
YES he was amazing
@@SamuraiChris78 He said he didn't even attend any acting lessons.
His first role..that's pretty incredible. Such a beautiful movie.
Actors who played Clare and Billy in this film were truly incredible. Wish they could've got some more recognition -- and wish more people would see this movie in general.
It’s about time.
I was born and raised in TASMANIA.
It is so true that we have only scratched the surface of the unthinkable cruelty on the island.
The brutality brought to this land has sat in silent echos of its past, long secret atrocities sit in that silence .
Shameful unspeakable acts whispered only by those who survived ,around camp fires.
Not written in the history books of ENGLAND .
The horror lays in ..that (man )is capable ,has always been and still is capable of this violence .....
2008marin So sad and so true...😓🙏🏾😓 horrifying
I went into this film completely blind and didn't even know where it was set at first. When I found out partway through the movie I was shocked and heartbroken than not only a remote island near Australia didn't escape the brutality of colonizers, the levels it endured were unprecedented.
I think it is the same violence and nearly extermination of the American Indians...a film about that era would also be interesting
A movie about the probable genocide of cornered indigenous people...let's say nightingale with a black cast and a white tracker..how bout that? Still appreciating the feminist approach by kent at least. Best from Berlin
Totally agree, former colonialist countries need to teach this stuff in their schools, it is reprehensible that it isn't commonly known and confronted with.
Hard to believe this is just her second film. It felt like I was watching a film by a master. Well she clearly is a master film maker
Just imagine what her next film will be like
@@OfficialLEBK can’t wait to see what she does next
Baykali Ganambarr broke my heart in this movie.... The Origine story of genocide and slavery is so utterly harrowing and often untold.
Baykali has done such an amazing job, well done! I cried so much but then through all the hatred and violence there was kindness and friendship.
Humble guy he has the coolest voice and super chill vibes all power to you mate.
Jennifer Kent is AMAZING.
She's standing up with the most courage possible making movies even the most historically fearless male filmmakers wouldn't dare approach, and she does it RIGHT out of the gate, starting with her debut "The Babadook" and now this.
I am PSYCHED for whatever she makes next.
Absolutely inspiring. 👍😊
This movie deserves an Oscar 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💎
Wooo! So exciting seeing Indigenous actors in films like this. Jennifer Kent is an incredible filmmaker... ❤️
22grena ah hello attention seeker. Aboriginal actors are allowed to work, act and do whatever the f*ck they want. This story is grim but it sheds light on real horrific events that have taken place here.
He’s Indigenous - if you’re from Australia, or know anything about Aboriginal people (which you clearly don’t) you’d know we just go by “Aboriginal” or “Indigenous.”
Go away annoying troll.
22grena I’m aboriginal and Irish lolololol last name is Mulholland.. I called you that because of your comment not cause you’re white
He really done great job portraiting the original Australian people (Aborigin). I just watch it yesterday and really can't move over the movie. Thumbs up to all the film crew and cast.
When he said Tanzania, I thought he was going to call the movie The Mockingbird.
lol
Once the interviewer is confused, everything is totally shot to hell.
Jennifer Kent what an inspiration, and beautiful story telling of a difficult time in history. Loved this movie for the sensitivity of the content and the story telling.
Baykali is a credit to his people, a wonderful performer. The film must have been so difficult for him.
Tasmania not Tanzania, totally different places
I am not surprised..he is an American!
Isn't Tanzania that island next to Austria?
lukasWalli89 😂😂
@@lukawalli
HA! :D Good one!!!!
@imaprouduclabruin Not according to this American's interviewing. HE SAID TANZANIA not TASMANIA so your comment is now redundant..........(LOL)
Movie-making for the emotional impact to help humanity. God bless, what a rare and brilliant lady
This film is complete magic. An incredible gift.
We need more films like this .It opened my eyes .
Jennifer may be my new favorite director, but God Damn was this movie difficult to watch at times!!!!
Edit: I just want to clarify that I meant it's emotionally difficult, not that there's anything wrong with the direction or story.
Agreed. She's amazing. Her movies are heartbreakingly beautiful
I watched this movie yesterday and it made me go out of the cinema like no other movie did before. This may be the most brutal film I watched so far and yet one of the most compassionate at the same time. Very interesting interview (despite of the (shameful) Tasmania/Tanzania fuckup). I remember seeing the trailer and immediately asking myself what the idea behind the aspect ratio was (not in a judging way, I think it really played out well!). Truly inspiring director.
Absolutely, totally agree.
In relation to the aspect ratio, I loved what she did - it helped isolate/differentiate her production from the larger (cinemascope) ratio that has become standard in the industry. A very simple & subtle change, but incredibly effective, when you consider how the majority of us as humans have become desensitised or even 'immune' to screen violence. We're so used to it; action movies, horrors etc, that we've absorbed since childhood / adolesence. Utilising that ratio takes the 'Hollywood' effect out of the film, and illuminates the raw purity of the story itself and scenes therein, I believe.
She does explain her reasoning for the ratio choice (24:00) in case you didn't get that far into this interview clip :D
She is great! One of the best, most talanted and empathatic film makers today. Loved this movie so much. What a great importance this movie has and what a shame it didn't got nominated for the more mainstream cinema awards.
Keyword here folk: "empathy = not an optional extra".
One of Australia's best directors, Jennifer Kent deserves so much more attention and accolades.
Seriously, someone buy that guy an atlas. Tasmania, Tasmania, Tasmania.
Always we learn from the past, past experience help us to build a better society .
It's a great movie .
Loved the film
Deeply disturbing, but totally necessary.
Very realistic, emotional, historical. Brought the experiences of the aborigines, the Irish and the colonialists
This movie was a story that needed to be told both the story of Tasmania and the indifference between the english and the Irish in those years she is a true visionary and an inspiration for more bold and in depth storytelling
The British upper class was evil incarnate for a very long time, and they've improved less than you'd hope.
Just watched this on Netflix. It is an incredible movie, very tough going but there is a lot of beauty as well. For any Australian's put it at the top of your viewing list. There is a lot to learn here.
"Tanzania" … I can't … 🤦♂️
It would be nice if the interviewer knew the difference between Tasmania and Tanzania!
Best film I’ve seen for a while. I don’t know any main stream actress who could have pulled off the role of Clare
Does the interviewer say Tanzania instead of Tasmania??
Awesome movie! Would love to watch anything Jennifer Kent makes
Well done Jennifer Kent and the entire cast. An excellent realistic film. A beautiful film.
Can’t wait for her next movie
Thank you for addressing this issue Jennifer. Part of the past in Ireland and it's a reality for many women across Germany and Sweden where rapes are becoming more and more common.
I watched The Nightingale at the IFC theater and love it.
Jennifer Kent should direct the live action film of Berserk
Ooohhhoohhhhoohhhhh..
Looking forward to seeing this, sounds very interesting and an important film with a purpose
Academy award members should serve prison time for this not being nominated for the Oscars. And no we don't need to send them back to 1825 and have the English stand guard
we need alot more movies covering the dark times of Australian history like the penal colony era. they sent alot of bad criminals in Tasmania and there would be alot of stories to cover.
The majority convicts sent to Tasmania were convicted of petty theft, larceny, pickpocketing. Murder and rape were not transportable offences until the 1830s. They were not bad criminals, with many incredibly poor living in terrible conditions. My convict ancestors were transported for stealing a cake and a sheep.
Jennifer great director, great cast and great crew. This is how live would of been.People need to be shown and reminded. It is a part of our history. Tassie is cut off from the rest of Australia and the perfect place to make the film .I know you did do it hard filming it was cold .I am the owner of the dog Hunter and if you read this ,I would like to say thank you to you all, once again . All the best for future films.Bradley.
It is insane i love movies and never heard one thing about this movie....It is incredibly great movie it tells a story intelligently and realistic...it is great when movies try to play down the violence of events that have happened...it is not glamoring it....and she tells it with all its complexity
What an amazing film, 5 out 5 stars from me. There is a little of Nicholas Roegs Walkabout in the Claire and Billy dynamic, however just BRAVO.
It's Tasmania not Tanzania.
Wow, this interviewer has no idea what this movie is about, who Baykali is, or even where/what Australia is. I was embarrassed watching this.
This movie was so important to me
Casualties of war was a harsh war film to watch too
Tanzania! Did the interviewer even watch the film. It’s Tasmania, Australia.
The Nightingale is an excellent film. But
man there are some incredibly difficult parts to watch in the first half.
I agree stop watching it so many times
This movie is excellent. It is an antipodal Dickensian morality tale writ large depicting a tableau that took place circa Dicken's England. To learn more about the history of Australia's and Tazmania's convict colonies and the hellish conditions that they endured, read a superb book by author ROBERT HUGHES -"FATAL SHORE".
I must be the only person who was not traumatized by the violence in this movie.
Of course, it was very unpleasant, but was it really worse than The Thing, or Alien, or some other truly horrifying films?
I'd give Nightingale a solid B or B+. It's not a mythopoetic classic like Walkabout, and Ganambarr doesn't have David Gulpilil's unmatched presence and command of the camera. But it had some interesting points, like the use of a nearly extinct language, period clothing, and mention of historical facts (the men really did abduct the native women, like Baker Boy' character said).
And there's Tasmania, and the whole excellent cast, not to mention Ganambarr's big brown eyes.
I find the movie traumatizing because it's depicting historically accurate racist brutality against human beings. This film shouldn't be used as a piece of comparison against fiction films but rather as a film to introduce colonization history in a region of the world that isn't mentioned as much. I do agree with your other points.
I don’t like this interviewer 😓
An important film
Baykali is like what am I even doing here?
I feel like people who mispronounce The Babadook shouldn't be allowed to interview Jennifer Kent.
Tanzania... come on mate.
Yeah Australia
Please do your research. Tanzania is in Africa. This movie was about what happened in Tasmania in Australia. Have a look at a map and see how far they are from each .
TANZANIA? ah yes, the southern most island in australia, tanzania in east africa. absolutely classic
Best Australian movie 👍🏾🇦🇺..bout time, another good way to get people to open there minds and stop living one sided white, black you know what I mean...bit of fiction and non fiction why not every other country does it to get some history across to educate some people, well I hope they do..I hope they start making more like this about what happened in Australia 🇦🇺...this country is to beautiful to have hidden secrets and racism still!!
Absolutely true.
The interviewer keeps referring to Tazmania as "Tanzania"both in this interview and the later one with the lead actress Aisling Franciosi. No big deal, just amusing, like when prominent people (including George W.Bush) pronounce nu-CLEAR as nu-CU-ler.
It’s not at all the same. You’re dense.
@@sarab3417 Your right eye must be fascinating......your left eye keeps staring at it......
We need an aboriginal actor to play the x-man Lucas Bishop. Bishop is aboriginal after all.
One scene confused me in The Nightingale - the white couple who were
killed lying in their bed. Who was supposed to be the killer? Was it the
aboriginals or soldiers?
Who knows. It's a war
Notice it's got the old one eye.
I switched off as soon as I heard TANZANIA.
Blue velvet?
I knew you were I corroboree dancer the moment I saw the trailer
'tanzania' lol
The upbeat and cheerful tone of the introduction is not quite right for the subject matter.
It's a film about racism and colonialism yet the TV show host immediately mistakes Tasmania for Tanzania.
Yah Palawa Milaythina Nika Lutruwita
Loved the movie but was so disappointed by the ending. It was such an unsatisfying end to her journey and felt like it was all for naught.
@Bola Oladapo I didn't expect or want Rambo at all. In fact, the violence in this film was difficult for me. My issue is that she was a convict, immigrant, woman in the 1820's. In reality, her claim would have been laughed at and the General would probably have been bought another round. That's not justice at all. Her whole journey was to seek retribution for the crimes committed against her and well, that was the exact opposite of her goal; which I found disappointing.
sorry I meant to say BUY the guy an atlas!!!!
Tanzania!!!??????????? Try Tasmania.
I felt like it was about trauma..
This guy does not know the difference between Tanzânia e Tasmania!
I think he just made a mistake
love americans
I’m in Astrya in Byron & I saw the Dook years ago, It was crazy creepy , this one looks amazing but the horrible German movie come & see was nasty , My indigenous mob from WA telling me was still legal to shot em In 75 how gross colonialism was
IT'S TASMANIA YOU PILLOCK
great, inject identity politics into your questions. It doesn't matter what gender she is, she is just a film maker.
"Tanzania"? Lol
Tanzania ? Ahhahahhahahahahahahahahah
Great Film, horrible interviewer!
This interviewer is really annoying and obnoxious. He seems really disingenuous
“Sins of the past” Part was unnecessary. Just get to the essence of the story screenplay character motivation, etc. .. we get it!
0:33 Tanzania? FFS it's Tasmania
