Your channel is a unique and vital piece of the fixed gear community. I live in the Tampa Bay Area on the west coast of Florida and I literally know ZERO people that ride fixed. It’s a solo endeavor, and it can be a real bummer sometimes. But you and the subscribers of your channel have become my riding buddies. I’ve gotten such great advice on building and riding from this channel that I never would have gotten from my local bike shop owner that rolled his eyes and scoffed when I asked if they sold track cogs (true story). So I just wanted to say thanks, Zach. I think I speak on behalf of a lot of people when I say I’m happy you’re still here. You help so many people out in so many different ways. And I, having always dreamed of owning a Wabi, am stoked for your partnership!

Hi Cullen I live in downtown St. Petersburg. Hit me up if you wanna ride sometime, I don't ride fixed but I'll promise not to change gears ;). I'm Brian Richter on strava. I ride the pinellas trail a lot, one of my favorite recent rides was up to clearwater, then over the courtney campbell into Tampa and then I took the gandy bridge back into st pete.

Patron here. I support your choices and you channel. I really felt for you the first half of this video. I’ve been in dark places before and I have to live with that cloud. Part of the reason I found this channel was trying to get out of that cloud by watching others do what I love doing. Riding and working on bikes. You’re making your dreams come true and that let’s me know that dreams can still come true. Through and through Zach you have my support.
Edit: idk that I’d be able to sell Ricky. Lol. You’re stronger than I. I get too attached to my bikes and projects. Good luck with the sale.

I never was a subscriber, but because of this video, I realized that your channel pushed me to buy my first fixed gear which helped me thru my depression. Riding opened up a lot of things for me and everyday I find new things to love in life. Thank you Zach. I hope that you also find many more things to make you happy. Subscribed...

Zach, you're the reason and inspiration for a lot of people. I started with single speed about 4yrs ago and since then up until this very post I reference your channel for what I consider to be "real world application. " I have always felt that you were unbiased which is undoubtedly one reason why everyone likes your channel and reviews. Fixie Points is my favorite!! Well, fast forward 4yrs later and i have 17 bicycles... one fixed and one official Fuji Track bike from 1986. I learned to skid by watching your tutorial and now it's difficult to imagine riding anything but fixed gear. You give great insight, you're HONEST, even vulnerable, you love bikes and you share your affinity for cycling with everyone from novice to pro. I know that I have been influenced by you. I PRAY for your continued success. I've never considered supporting any other channel through patreon but you'll be the first. Dammit if can't watch the Zach Gallardo show no mo!
And probably like you, I've matured. Bike building is a journey. I have a bike that i dumped close to $1,500 into and then my 2 latest bikes... an old school Trek fixed conversion that I've invested less than $70 total and my aforementioned Fuji. Well, my FUJI cost about $730 including a dt swiss track wheelset but I've learned that bling isn't everything and from watching your vids I've actually learned how to build the bikes that actually match my style. Crazy because my Trek was supposed to be a beater and my Fuji is so basic but the two bikes crush everything else that i own. And like you, I'll probably sell off my other bikes next season to build better bikes now that I have a better understanding of what a bike should be. So "THANKS" again!
And if anyone was nosy enough to read my long @$$ post then you should also support Zach through patreon to ensure that there's at least one guy that's passionately dedicated to the CULTURE.
    ZACH GALLARDO FOR PRESIDENT.

where's the link to buy Ricky? As one of your patrons and a huge fan of your videos, I'd be honored to take care of Ricky for you. Tbh bro you've pretty much pushed me to ride every day I can ever since I started getting into cycling when I first discovered your channel. You're kind if like my hero. I took your advice of buying a dawes sst rather than buying a 6ku and I even bought a pearl white Kilo tt pro this summer. Having Ricky would be huge. I just need a few weeks to make the money. and about the whole patron problems, I get it dude. shit happens sometimes but I'll keep supporting your channel because I truly believe your videos are the best bike videos on the internet.

Quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (famous for writing the Sherlock Holmes stories): “When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road without a thought on anything but the ride you are taking”...just wanted to thank you for turning me, a 66-year-old, on to fixed gear bikes. Now the road bike, the cross bike and the gravel bike usually stay in the garage while the fixed is always the bike of choice for that special “spin down the road”!

It took lots of guts to talk about your struggles with depression so openly. But the only way to get people to be honest and upfront about their own struggles are for people to make this a subject to be addressed rather than hide. I've been watching you religiously for over a year and this is my favorite video you've made. Keep up the fight and I look forward to many more years of bike videos sponsored by Wabi. Nicely done, Zach!

    • @ZachGallardo
      @ZachGallardo  6 років тому

Thanks for the kind words. For me, one of the hardest things about depression was accepting that I have it for no reason in particular. Another hard thing to do was figuring out what to do about it. The more I've openly talked about my struggle with depression, the more I've found other people have experienced the exact same thing which has helped me to feel at least a little bit more hopeful. The more we can openly talk about mental health, the more people can get the help they need.
I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos, and ride on!

  • @bdub345

Man, I fucking love this! I can say some similar things about cycling and depression myself. I started riding bmx like 2.5 years ago and it's probably saved my life, that and medications and therapy. But it gave me a reason to get out of bed. Then a year into bmx I got sick of not being able to just ride around and cover ground without getting messed up or kicked out of spots all the time, I still make hella time for bmx but a change in pace is nice. I bought a fixed gear and started building it. I love both bmx and fixed equally and I see them as two separate evils. Fixed riding helps my bmx riding and bmx riding helps my fixed riding and both make me want to push myself further and further. I will continue to support you Zach; you're one of my main fixed gear resources and your opinions and tutorials and whatnot have saved me hella time and money and used up some of my down time being entertained by your reasonable dangerous lifestyle. Glad to hear you made it through and glad to see you going places doing what you want how you want it. That's the bmx way of life and the fixed way of life. You're an inspiration and a role model, man.

Wow, Zach, this video made me cry and happy at the same time. I'm way older than you (57), a bike fanatic (own 15 bikes...I think) although not into fix riding, not because I don't like it but because my body is incapable of riding fix 👴 and for the past 2 1/2 years I have also been battling depression. asking exactly the same questions you have though I'm at a different point in time in my life than you were. I'm glad you're doing better and very glad you started this UA-cam channel that I love. Quite a few of my bikes are single speeds that could be ridden as fixies and they are my favorites of all my bikes. Unfortunately, in 2011 I accepted a job in Texas were is windy most of the year and riding single speed is out of the question at least 3 or 4 months of the year if not more. I don't race, I don't do lycra (only under my shorts). I just commute to work and ride for fun. I'm not fast and I have no desire of racing anyone. I just want to ride. And I am glad to still be around to do just that. I'm also glad you are around and doing a fantastic job with this channel. Keep up the good work and keep those videos coming.

You deserve the Wabi sponsorship. I was looking around for my new winter beater bike that was good quality and was the best bang for the buck for my needs. I ended up going with a wabi classic frame and you are right it rides great. I hate to admit it but my classic rides nicer than my expensive bike which i spent a ton of money on. Also they ship to Canada which is a huge plus. Thanks to your channel I now have a great bike that cost me less than anything I could buy around here. Keep up the good work Zach!

Back when I was living alone, I used to go on day-long or longer rides to places far from home. I thought I was only doing it so that I could show people the cool things and places I've found, but during some times when I was unable to do those rides for an extended period, I realized that I would start to slip back into my own depression. I needed to do these rides for my own sanity, and the excitement I felt from the memories of those rides would carry me though the week.
My girlfriend moved in over a year ago, so I'm not alone all the time anymore and don't need the rides like I used to, but I still really do enjoy going on them. At the moment, that means leaving her alone all day, which is hard on her and I don't like doing that, but we're trying to get her riding more. Her asthma makes it very difficult for her, and her doctor kept cancelling appointments when we were trying to get it taken care of, but she's been able to see her doctor recently and we have a plan of attack. We even have a tandem in the works, which I'm really excited about. I enjoy when we ride dangerously close together so we can talk, and having a tandem will let us do it all the time!

Thinking more of your this latest vlog-- you have a lot of courage and thanks for sharing your story. I think many of us have been in dark spots... now a tech question-Love my Wabi, thanks to your recommendation. Is it possible that I would notice an improvement if I went to an Omnium setup from their stock cranks?

    • @ZachGallardo
      @ZachGallardo  6 років тому

With regards to stiffness, it probably won't make a big enough difference for you to notice. I actually think the stock Andel crankset is better than Omniums for daily riding since stock Omnium bottom brackets tend be hit or miss. When I rode with Omniums, the bottom bracket started to feel crunchy and creaked after 6 months.

I empathize a lot with you Zach, the whole reason I cycle again is because depression. I'm still in school, and trying to make it through that last few semesters. I was down in the dumps and remembering what made me happy back in middle and high school was biking, back then it was trail riding but I now lived in a city for uni so I got a BLB lopro and fell in love. Found your channel and got even more into it. I started working at an LBS and now have 4 bikes. I too sold the bike that sparked my love but now I have a bike I'll never sell and ride it every chance I get. It always gets better people, shit happens and you may feel alone but you never are, dont be afraid to reach out to others.
Keep up the work Zach, much love

Congratulations. I’m glad that someone jumped on board and supported your channel. Personally, I thought State or Aventon would have been the one.
Wabi was right in that your videos are very well done for the fixed gear community.
Now you’ll have to do the Red Bull hill climb in San Francisco next year and make some videos that lead up to it

I bought my first single speed, a Wabi, a year ago thanks to your cool videos. It's fitting you are sponsored by them. Good job! By the way, the Wabi is amazing. Why does it feel good to ride uphill!!

Congrats on the Wabi thing Zack. I have been a dyed in wool Wabi cult member for the last 5 years (Wabi special (circa the end of Richards run), and a recently purchased wabi classic (2017). They are super premium bikes, and as you said, they are great right out of the box. Anyway, just wanted to chime in, and let you know I'm happy for you. If this does become a "Wabi" channel, that's fine with me. Take care, and say good bye to Ricky for me. Peace.

Liked the part where you talked About your Depression. I can relate to that completely. Ironically Building up a new bike, reparing bikes of my Friends, making music and becoming better in Tetris (my fav Videogame which is basically a Sport but I know how stupid that sounds) were the things that distracted me in the first place from my heaviest Depression with suicidal thoughts. Pick yourself a Goal that you wanna accomplish. Something that makes a Little sense to you at least, than you can overcome a Depression.

Zach, I'm more than twice your age and hope to impart the wisdom I've learned. No matter how good the reasons, or how sweet the deal, you will still miss the bikes you sell. In this case Ricky is a huge part of the history of your journey. Find a way to keep him. Or at least just give him to a friend who promises to give him back when you want another Ricky roll.

Wow Zach. I love you bro. Thank you for sharing something about your personal life. Can't believe you are divorcing Ricky and marrying your side chick but do what you gotta do (just kidding lmao). Legit went from watching a few of your how-tos to binging to watching your videos as soon as they release. You get me pumped about cycling and make me feel engaged with the community even though I just watch your videos and ride and not much else. Can't tell you how much I learned from you and also really appreciate how you look at life in a un-pretentious and minimal way. Thanks for sharing your passion. -Daniel

Fun fakt is that I've been watching you mostly also in my period of strong depression :) Not only your movies, but also riding fixed gear in a bicycle messengers in Poland, and riding through the Scandinavia alone, really helped me out :) I'm certain there must be some link between NOT riding bikes, and depression ;)

I cycle to manage pain from numerous injuries and repairs. Found that the concentration I put into the pedals helps me block pain. There's nothing quite like bicycling that can do that.

Please take care of yourself and keep at your mission and keep fueling the fire and desire in your heart. Don’t let go of your passion. Stay awesome and I’ll be reasonably dangerous :-)

oh dang, but I understand man. My aging 735 is getting replaced with a custom steel fixed-gear frame that my friend and I are building (mix of Reynolds and Vera-wall tubing), so I'm not super sad retiring the 735. Funny you should mention this combination of depression and the bike...it's something that I've found myself intercepting with my own riding/journey. Where I ended up is feeling grateful for my life overall, and that helped give me some peace. Plus riding bikes, bike riding gives me lots of peace!

Love the channel, been watching for at least a year and I find you to be both entertaining and informative. I've been seriously cycling for a few years now and commute to work in Detroit by bike! It's awesome! I've learned a lot about biking and components from this channel. Thanks for that man!
You turned me on to Wabi and I really like their style. My last two bikes have been aluminum and I was looking to buy a steel frame and build it up. Reynolds 725 seems to the sweet spot for weight and value. Any chance of getting a review for the Wabi Thunder Elite?

I'll second what Davis Porter said. I would love to see a review of the Wabi Thunder. Since I know you like biking rain or shine and that Ricky only sometimes had fenders, I am wondering if you have any tips for cleaning steel bikes after getting road sludge on them and whatnot after a day of rainy riding? (I appreciate your drivetrain tips--should I worry about the bottom bracket, too?)

zach the "depression" u speak of is the truth and not a diagnosis. Some people are just more sensitive to pick up on things and realize our existence as humans are quite pointless. The meaning o our lives can only be defined by our minds/bodies but our souls are omnipotent and ever present. Sometimes I want to ride my bike forever other times I feel like pulling to side of road and just just wait till I fall o the bike but I think in this world there is a sense of void or barren nature. Some people fill this void with material, some with sex and socialization, some with $ and business and spreading their name and fame etc. Suffice to say there is the nuances and constant nudge that we as a species wonder where we come from and where we are going.
