My "Lazy Principle" of Productivity

  • The Lazy Principle - That you should plan and schedule tasks with your lazy self in mind, not with the productive self who's doing the scheduling. That way, you're much more likely to stick to your plans and account for procrastination. This makes it much less likely that you completely fail to meet your goals and end up quitting.

    I'm asked again and again just how I manage my time, and although these systems really have evolved with time and come naturally to me, I sat down and thought just what I'd changed in how I manage my time and schedule things in my calendar.
    I've always been a go-go-go person, even when I refer to 'doing nothing' in this video - it really is me thinking about what I've done, have to do, will do or want to do.
    So I'm not sure what I'm saying here makes sense or is helpful to anyone else. I just wanted to start approaching the question. Hopefully I can get better at both understanding my systems, and explaining them.
    As in my channel description, my 'productivity' systems really are a lot of fun for me. I've always been this way and absolutely love it. This video is just to compare notes between others already interested in this sort of stuff, I'd love to hear your tips!
    Please don't ever feel I'm suggesting a behaviour change! It's all about following our fun and this is mine. 💙

    I feel so so so relieved to hear you say : "I am a procrastinator". This makes me feel that I don't have to hate myself for the fact that i am a procrastinator too. I think the part that keeps procrastination alive is feeling like we are horrible people because of it.

      Never become too addicted to one type of "procrastination" (which is basically a pastime). If you are into sports thenalso start reading some books so that your hobby changes and you don't get addicted. Do everything lightly, become jack of all trades. Then you won't feel guilty.

      At times when I have "done nothing" I look back and realize just how much happened.
      At times when I have tried hard to "get my life in order" and schedule everything, I look back and realize, nothing has really happened.
      I should definitely put my energy in doing things, no planning them. That said, i _love_ planning. So there is a conflict there.

    • @critical-chris
      @critical-chris Рік тому +1

      @@57thorns The thing is: why do we love planning? If it's because it makes us feel we're getting stuff done without doing them, then it's a problem. But if it's because we need to write stuff down in order to get it out of our heads or because we want to figure out whether or when we actually have time to actually do stuff, then I don't think it's such a big problem.

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns Рік тому +2

      @@critical-chris I believe you just described the difference between planning and scheduling. (If we want to make that distinction.)
      We need plans to figure out what we want to do, and in what order (approximately at least).
      It is when that plan turns into a schedule, our "planning" is just another word for procrastination.
      Do we need schedules? Yes, when _other_ people are involved. We need to figure out at what time we can see each other for that beer (or barn building or board game night).
      But do you really need a schedule for when to read a book or clean your windows? If you are 100% honest with yourself? No, scheduling to do the windows tomorrow is the same as saying "i won't do them today", except, when you don't do the windows tomorrow either, you feel bad about yourself for failing.

    When I tell someone it will take me 5 full days to write a 15 page report - people would think I'm crazy... But then they end up doing just that - just with the extra blame and now being behind schedule because they overcommitted themselves to too many things...
    Hope more people find value in this scheduling technique.

    I work in SW development, and we use Scrum to plan work. At least, there is a theoretical framework almost everyone pretends to use.
    The problem is:
    The idea with Scrum is that you prioritize tasks. You estimate not how long time they should take, but how complex they are. You try to figure out how much can be done in the next three weeks, very well knowing that not every day is equal, and not every task takes how much time you think it will take.
    But in the end, it is used for scheduling (how long. not how complex/hard) and the planning does not work.
    You take on productivity might very well work very well for work, especially other areas where creativity is important.

    Omg that’s exactly what I do! I learned all that you said the hard way though lol 😂💔 I went through a lot of guilt trips and emotional roller coasters before I reached to the conclusion of just enjoying delaying things and doing them even a day before the deadline as long as the quality of my work and projects isn’t compromised. Also I learned that I shouldn’t be so harsh and critical of myself and that I should take it easy on myself and be ok with being a human not a robot LOL 😂 Especially now with the community of productivity and always doing something or working on something comes the toxic pressure of having to be productive all the time and comes with toxic productivity environment cause of peer pressure. So productivity actually turns to something unhealthy just like drinking or smoking instead of something that enhances us as students and human beings

    I've held my hand up to my smile like that before too, once in a while it still happens, it's lovely regardless...
    Thanks for the stop scene, I totally found myself holding my head up.
