My "Lazy Principle" of Productivity

- The Lazy Principle - That you should plan and schedule tasks with your lazy self in mind, not with the productive self who's doing the scheduling. That way, you're much more likely to stick to your plans and account for procrastination. This makes it much less likely that you completely fail to meet your goals and end up quitting.

I'm asked again and again just how I manage my time, and although these systems really have evolved with time and come naturally to me, I sat down and thought just what I'd changed in how I manage my time and schedule things in my calendar.
I've always been a go-go-go person, even when I refer to 'doing nothing' in this video - it really is me thinking about what I've done, have to do, will do or want to do.
So I'm not sure what I'm saying here makes sense or is helpful to anyone else. I just wanted to start approaching the question. Hopefully I can get better at both understanding my systems, and explaining them.
As in my channel description, my 'productivity' systems really are a lot of fun for me. I've always been this way and absolutely love it. This video is just to compare notes between others already interested in this sort of stuff, I'd love to hear your tips!
Please don't ever feel I'm suggesting a behaviour change! It's all about following our fun and this is mine. 💙

The day Ali will comment "productive stuff" is the day Liz will have a cheese cake.!!
I feel so so so relieved to hear you say : "I am a procrastinator". This makes me feel that I don't have to hate myself for the fact that i am a procrastinator too. I think the part that keeps procrastination alive is feeling like we are horrible people because of it.
Never become too addicted to one type of "procrastination" (which is basically a pastime). If you are into sports thenalso start reading some books so that your hobby changes and you don't get addicted. Do everything lightly, become jack of all trades. Then you won't feel guilty.
Love this one: "I am always working consistently, just on a larger time scale."
Best productivity thing I've heard on UA-cam for a long time! 😂
At times when I have "done nothing" I look back and realize just how much happened.
At times when I have tried hard to "get my life in order" and schedule everything, I look back and realize, nothing has really happened.
I should definitely put my energy in doing things, no planning them. That said, i _love_ planning. So there is a conflict there.
@@57thorns The thing is: why do we love planning? If it's because it makes us feel we're getting stuff done without doing them, then it's a problem. But if it's because we need to write stuff down in order to get it out of our heads or because we want to figure out whether or when we actually have time to actually do stuff, then I don't think it's such a big problem.
@@critical-chris I believe you just described the difference between planning and scheduling. (If we want to make that distinction.)
We need plans to figure out what we want to do, and in what order (approximately at least).
It is when that plan turns into a schedule, our "planning" is just another word for procrastination.
Do we need schedules? Yes, when _other_ people are involved. We need to figure out at what time we can see each other for that beer (or barn building or board game night).
But do you really need a schedule for when to read a book or clean your windows? If you are 100% honest with yourself? No, scheduling to do the windows tomorrow is the same as saying "i won't do them today", except, when you don't do the windows tomorrow either, you feel bad about yourself for failing.
@@57thorns this is actually beautiful thank you
It's crazy how much I can relate to you on this one. I'm a massive scheduler too and end up looking at my own to do's like it was somebody else's after a few days. 😄
True
"Some of my most enjoyable times are when I'm procrastinating!" so true lol
This was such an anti 'toxic productivity' vid w/o mentioning it.
True ❤
I always thought that being consistent meant being consistent every single day but now I realized because of you that you have to "zoom out" and look over the span of weeks and months not days, minutes, and seconds. Thank you this was very enlightening and very useful!
As a fellow tight scheduler who never gets everything done, I currently combat it by giving myself a score /10 everyday and the way I look at it, if I average 7/10 over time then I’ll live a “first class” life. I like your strategy aswell! Great video 👏🏿
Thanks for sharing as always. I find some of my most inspiring moments come from those moments of doing nothing.
Exactly
So truuuue!
I believe everybody procrastinate but not everybody accepts it!
Thank you for sharing!
Elizabeth, you should know that I enjoy watching your videos. I don't even understand how time passes! May success and luck always be with you in your life :) Hope to see you one day !
Thank youu same to you :)
The zoom out piece is brilliant. This mind shifting idea gave me a large sense of relief 😌. Thank you!!
You're so welcome, thanks for watchinggg :)
@@elizabethfilips Also most would consider making videos to be an artform.
I have the same issues and found that a change of mindset and being okay with not fitting into this boxes we create for ourselves is one of the best things I could do for myself and my productivity. Thank you, this video really resonated with me :)
Omg this is what I just needed i tend to overplan make 30000 plans as if my futur self is a robot and when I start falling behind on my work I start to feel terrible , u just change my perspective omg
I'm really enjoing the shorter video format like 5-6 minutes. Great video
Glad to hear it :)
I love you.
In all the youtube and self-help (I hate it) spheres, you are by far the closes person to speak my kind of language.
All the best to you young lady!
Your lessons are amazing!
Keep up the work!
You are on the right path.
👏👏👏👏
I suffer tremendously from feeling like I have to hit a certain amount of work everyday. It's a curse. I'm gonna give this a try. Zooming out to look on my long term progress should work just as good if not better. Great video as always Liz!
Its so relatable
Liz procrastinated by working on this video. Smh, still proactive.
lol
Hi! may I just say, this is the most relatable video so far. You are beyond amazing thank you!!
this is such an awesome approach!! "follow my fun" I love this! I have to note this somewhere and keep reminding myself to have fun! :) thank you so much for this, a fire video as always
I can totally relate this to myself. Even sometimes, I spend way more time scheduling Apple Calendar and Notion, instead of the original task. Because simply they bring more joy to me.
Amazing content Elizabeth!
This is so me !! I'm glad this Video exists.❤️
I have been watching many of your videos and the I really love how you approach life and the way you see things differently
I absolutely love your view!!! I'm a med student & felt like the fact I don't stick to a consistent schedule day in day out and actually hate routines that I'm a failure.. but your view is so so much better❤️ I always get everything done, just in a more sporadic way!
I’m currently at college and have a uni place ready for this September, just got to get the grades to get in. I’ve struggled a lot during lockdown with getting things done but seeing you makes my day and your videos help me to get through my course. Thanks so much for being the motivation!
Awesome video! Love the advice and that procrastination isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Follow your fun” Good words to live by!
Very true, this is what I evangelize. The actual signs of success is when you compare your last year's YOU to yourself now. Keep inspiring. More Love to you ❤️

Yup
Long term thinking. Love it!
Thank you for adding value in my life 🧬 through your videos.☺️🙏
I relate to the struggles presented, so much! Down to the overly motivated attempt to break down tasks and plan, followed by the guilt of not following it. I appreciate the ideas you gave!
Thanks for watching :)
u shine positivity and have an awesome mindset!
so inspired and early congratulation on 100K!
I hope you reach 1m very soon too!
Oh my thank you jack! 😆
Great video Elizabeth! I am having a go at bullet journaling for the whole of March. I had literally never heard of it before, but recently someone asked me if I did it. I decided to look it up and one thing led to another and now I'm committed to at least 31 days of it! This may be a case of Overexcitable-Connor planning something that Lazy-Connor finds himself unable to do, who knows!
Woww....I must say this is THE MOST RELATABLE Procrastination related video I've EVER seen....I can relate to you 100%
Will surely be following this advice of being consistent on a larger time scale
Thanks!❤️
WOW THANK YOU!
This is something I've been telling people around me for over 4 years now, and it seems like everyone agrees on the concept, but actually wouldn't dare to implement in their own life...
When I tell someone it will take me 5 full days to write a 15 page report - people would think I'm crazy... But then they end up doing just that - just with the extra blame and now being behind schedule because they overcommitted themselves to too many things...
Hope more people find value in this scheduling technique.
"I'm very generous with myself" luv this. ty for the excellent advice
omg i think we're the same person when i first found your channel i thought "wow she has such a similar mindset to me i'm so glad i finally found someone like this on youtube" and with every new video of yours i watch that feeling gets stronger thank you for these videos!!
Honestly I feel like you're so similar to me it's unbelievable. The only difference is that you're able to embrace your nature and teaching me how to do it as well 😭🥺😍
Oh my god..I was JUST binge-watching her videos today! Love your vids Lizzie 💞
AWH thank youuuu!
That’s a very cool way of studying/getting things done!
Oh my goodness! You literally just described me! So excited about the planning, procrastinate through the actual process! thanks for this video! very helpful!
You're so welcome :)
Wowwwwww ! The way you see things , how you present your perspective ..i love it ! I hated myself that i Procastinated on a lot of things , well it maks life more better to live so nothing wrong about it if it's controlled and not done too much
It's nice to see a productivity youtuber who isn't just naturally hyper productive anyway
First of all I love you, I finally feel like I am not crazy. I get soo much done but yet I am never consistent. I thought something was wrong with me you showed me otherwise. Thank you so much for your content
I have the similar problem of first procrastinating and then working in bursts to completing things before deadline. The main problem was to do some things consistently without procrastinating. This video provides some valuable insights. I am excited to try some of them. Thanks for a new perspective.
I really do love her. I love the way in which she presents herself, I love her hair, I love how inteligent she is and how passionate she is. I truly aspire to be like her
💙💙💙
wow this is exactly what I do even though I've never watched this video before. Scheduling things never works. I try to be super flexible with what I want to do. I write down all the tasks I want to get done eventually, but I prioritise day by day what I want to focus on for each area of my life. So despite having off days where I don't do a thing for a while, I am able to keep track of it all because I have written it down and know exactly what I need to do next to progress the project.
Love your videos Liz, I'm on a Mpharm course atm and your videos help a lot!
You are remarkably inspirational. Please keep doing you - love the Notion videos as well.
I love you so much!!! And I decide to learn English well partly because of you!!!
Loving the consistency 🙌
Yes pleasseee, would lovvee to see your actual study/life schedule 🥺❤️
The video is on the channel already!
This video is soso helpful! Also you are absolutely nailing this YT game Elizabeth
Awhh thank youu!
This is great! I have recently discovered the same thing of not over scheduling myself because then I’d be behind and never be able to catch up, and therefore I would feel even worse because I was just always behind. Glad I’m not the only one! Haha :)
Clinical advice, straight to the point. Thanks!
Hearing this explained helps my ADHD a lot. I only recently realized that if I "zoom out" I'm actually doing a lot of things, and I am consistent over time. I just hate having consecutive days look the same. This is why I enjoy being a student more than having a job.
Same thing. I seem to be always free, in contrast to my mates who always seems to be rushing into things and busy schedules.. I take it slow and steady, taking alot of different things together, arranging them in bouts of times based on my mood and inspiration and yes by the end of months or years when I look back I actually have done quite alot more than others. Thanks for clearing that up.
This video has so much value to it, i can't even
Thank you, really!

Thank you for this video♥️
Good as always! Love your videos❤
Por fin encontré un video con el que identificó, me sentía mal por ser alguien que disfruta procrastinar, pero gracias a este video encontré una nueva perspectiva y estilo de vida que se adapta a mi.
Thank you! This was a very unique way of looking at planning. And I could strongly relate to that part when you said that you will have periods when you won't/don't feel like doing anything and other times where your motivation is through the roof and you not only get a lot of stuff done but you get it done super efficiently.
PS: You've just got a new fan all the way from Bangladesh :D
This is great stuff ... something doing nothing is just what you need 💯
“Some of my most relaxing and enjoyable times are when I was procrastinating” THIS HITS DEEP! 😂🙋🏻♀️
I love that you touched upon the idea that what we DO in life is meant to make life BETTER, which is sometimes, NOTHING. Very Zen.
Clarity of purpose in tasks, feeds into the motivation towards said tasks, which feeds the intrinsic desire to do the task, which often leads to more clarity towards other tasks.
[wink]
Good, comprehensive advice! Just enjoy life! Nice.
Love this video!
Great advice, I just found her and I already love her, already a fan
This is your window view? OH MY GOD. Absolutely amazing!
This reminds me of Barbara Sher's book "Refuse to choose" ("How to use all your interests, passions, and hobbies to create the life and career of your dreams") in which she describes different possible types of schedules, some of which look like yours.
...as always, simply lovely :)

@@elizabethfilips Hey!!! No flattery at all, you're putting me to shame with the level of your content!
Everyone knows about these things still we don't do anything about it because we have ignorance..but sometimes we really need a good perspective to break that ignorant barrier and then we realise... what the hell r we doing..but at that time we had already lost our precious time but that does not mean the end...that one spark of that click inside our conscience burn down that ignorant barrier which is the main causes of procrastination....this is what your videos does...thanks for the content...keep sparking
Yes, I am searching about procrastination video 👏...
You are sweet, sorted and have clarity in your life😊
The way I see it is if I'm going to be exercising my whole life there is really no need to get in a fuss over missing a day or two. Though generalizing this idea to other areas of life is still on going.
god thankyou for existing, i thought i was the only one
“The Lazy Principle” looks like the solution I’ve been looking for.. Honestly, the productive mind wants what it wants but the lazy self can’t just keep up.. LOL

I love this! It’s really realistic
Thanks for watching :)
I work in SW development, and we use Scrum to plan work. At least, there is a theoretical framework almost everyone pretends to use.
The problem is:
The idea with Scrum is that you prioritize tasks. You estimate not how long time they should take, but how complex they are. You try to figure out how much can be done in the next three weeks, very well knowing that not every day is equal, and not every task takes how much time you think it will take.
But in the end, it is used for scheduling (how long. not how complex/hard) and the planning does not work.
You take on productivity might very well work very well for work, especially other areas where creativity is important.
Omg that’s exactly what I do! I learned all that you said the hard way though lol 😂💔 I went through a lot of guilt trips and emotional roller coasters before I reached to the conclusion of just enjoying delaying things and doing them even a day before the deadline as long as the quality of my work and projects isn’t compromised. Also I learned that I shouldn’t be so harsh and critical of myself and that I should take it easy on myself and be ok with being a human not a robot LOL 😂 Especially now with the community of productivity and always doing something or working on something comes the toxic pressure of having to be productive all the time and comes with toxic productivity environment cause of peer pressure. So productivity actually turns to something unhealthy just like drinking or smoking instead of something that enhances us as students and human beings
your voice n accent is intensely soothing ...
Yeas ❤
I've held my hand up to my smile like that before too, once in a while it still happens, it's lovely regardless...
