We live near by. I’m not black but I always feel so very welcomed on oly and we frequent there quite often. As a woman I feel generally safe there unlike a lot of places near by
As a black person residing in Olympia, I have seen white supremacists march in a circle at the Capitol Campus with Swastika arm patches & machine guns AND I have seen anti-racist groups and others welcoming any and everyone with acceptance & kindness. I have lived in Oly for 8 ish years & feel safe, mostly; there are some spots that I avoid as a black woman alone, and there are places I traverse alone, regularly. I have dropped my paddle-board in several different bodies of water, alone, all day & felt 100% safe! The climate, here, changed during the 2016 election, sadly. Things are feeling more welcoming and diverse now that COV!D is over, as well. Unfortunately, the food scene here leaves a lot to be desired, since some fantastic eateries could not climb out of pandemic quagmire
Glad you two enjoyed your time there; I recently came back there from North Idaho(I ended my trip prematurely & left the same day I came due to many of the people being fairly anti-social there(maybe it's just a "Seattle Freeze" culture there as it were), at least from what I saw in Tumwater Park where many people would just walk away from me or not even acknowledge me after saying hello a fair amount of times to multiple individuals(it's a norm here in North Idaho and even in Spokane at times to say hello to strangers since they are part of the community); nonetheless, I am glad I made the trip for a friend of mine like she did for me years ago even though the vibe of the town/people didn't resonate well with me(at least I gave it a try like trying a new kind of food at the very least), and it ultimately was a healing circle as well as having a nice feeling returning home when I entered Spokane County and eventually back to North Idaho; take care 🌈 🌙

Check out Lacey too! It's the more diverse city in the area. Glad you had a good experience here! ❤
