the WORLD'S FASTEST Stock Bottom End 8.1 is back for more

- Can we run a 10 second pass with a bone stock junkyard 8.1 in a 5,100 pound Silverado? We came down to a test and tune session at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to find out what a turbocharger, some E85, lots of timing and a little luck would get us. We had some challenges along the way and may have hurt a few parts, but the truck put down the performance of a lifetime. Either way, we're gonna be back before you know it, and be faster than every.
Also, you should check out the video of the COPO truck dominating the competition in the Speed/Stop challenge, also here in Vegas.

I kept thinking the chip in your windshield was a drone filming you 😂. Well done man!
I know, I thought the same thing probably 12 times as I was editing this
I knew i wasn't the only one! lol
Seeing you this exited was fun. When it was really hooking up and you started really getting down, you could see the excitement in your eyes. What a good time
It was a ton of fun!
@@LawrenceTolman definitely needs a nitrous plate with a standalone fuel system (filled with meth of course)
LT, that is a respectably quick truck! Hope you are incredibly proud of it!
Thanks, and I am so proud of how it’s going so far!
A converter will be the best option. I saw the time come down but mph stay close and recognized a similar issue i had.
Went through this with a turbo big block ford. Putting a 3.23 or 3.08 in will compound the problem as you will be putting more load on the conveter.
Or with the 2wd chassis if you just want the 10 number throw a 4.10 in the rear and use overdrive out the back door.
WOW! THAT WAS AWESOME! SO CLOSE. YOU CAN'T EVEN BE BUMMED ABOUT THAT. SEEMS LIKE COOLER TEMPS CAME INTO PLAY.
Just now getting caught up on your last few videos. The 8.1L is absolutely putting in work and staying together like a champ. Color me impressed.
To answer your question on why people aren't throwing out their LS engines in favor of a big block - cost. Yes... "here come the poors." The LS platform still has a lot of bang for the buck.
Man ohh so close but that's really impressive as to how fast and how well the ugly truck ran!! That nighttime cooler air will definitely help out in the HP department for sure!! Glad that you had a good time and just think how much faster it will go with AWD and that new big block in it!! Nice work and your channel is sooo awesome!!!
LT the only complaint about your channel .....more videos & longer too!!! love what you do!! & can't get enough!! On the cusp of that 10 sec run!!!
So close to a 10! And I make these videos as quick as I can, so thanks for watching em!
LT your excitement was palpable on the 11.14 run (where you absolutely gapped that Nova). Great video man, had a ton of fun watching..."..this 8.1 life..." did you ever see yourself saying that when you started the project? Love it. PS 3.08s and I bet you get the 10 on your third pass.
thanks! when I first started this build, the "internet" had me convinced I'd blow it up at 5 or 7 psi, I had no idea if would live this long being a 100% stock junkyard engine, but every time it goes faster and faster, I fall more in love with the big block
Another great video. Been waiting for this video all week.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey man that's 100% a win you took the most "brittle" big block out there and have proved time and time again the 8.1 will hold its own with no issues. It made me so happy to see that big ol girl boogy down track that and YOU DROVE ON THE TRAILER that it's a damn good day of racing. I can't wait to see the new big block and 4wd swap on that beast it is going to be NASTY gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr I really wanna see that thing run. As always great video Lt thanks for the amazing content much love from texas ✌️
It's a Gen 7 BBC, it shares more with the Gen 3/4 SBC than a Gen 1-Gen 5 BBC.
That was great man, loved that you went all in at the end, as my good buddy says “do it for the story”
Great job on doing something different and making it fast. Can't wait to see what the new engine will do.
I love seeing Big Blocks getting respect! Awesome runs. The converter's got my vote too. Two paths that would help - lock the converter in third and it stays locked through fourth. (multi-disc required for that much torque), or lower the stall RPM significantly with a converter swap. Gears are fine, I would not spend another dime on a 10-bolt. It sounds like you're getting too little RPM drop with each shift. 8.1 with stock cam/heads has a torque peek at 3200 and the HP peek is 4200, but that's going to be different with boost since it's the long runners limiting top end potential when N/A. The 4200RPM peek is probably more around 4500. The converter seems like it brake stalls higher than 3200RPM. I've been running L29 454's in various combinations (including bone stock) in half-tons for over 10 years. A stock L29 and a 10.5" 3200RPM converter with 4.56:1 gears will lift the left front on launch, but the fun's over as soon as it's past 3500RPM. Too much converter for the stock cam. (I shift a stock L29 at 4900-5000RPM.) Best compromise for me turned out to be an OEM 13" converter from a 1-ton 5.7L L31/M30 application. Lost a good bit of of launch, but that's only the first 2 seconds. Beyond that it's far better and the power keep pouring through. That said, I don't think the stator sprag in any OEM converter is going to be adequate for your power levels, unfortunately. Should also mention that in my experience with a 4L80-E, the looser converter is easier on parts. The same shift values will give you a greater jolt with a tighter converter, but you don't want them that crisp - the roller clutch in the overdrive assembly is weak and will slip with a good jolt of toque. Once a roller gets the tiniest flat spot it worsens rapidly. That roller clutch holds in all gears except 4th. (If you do smoke the roller clutch, forward gears will freewheel. Put it into manual 3rd and the overrun clutch will apply and hold. That overrun only does engine braking in 1-3 normally, so it's not going to hold much power. It is enough to limp home - been there/done that.)
That was awesome.
I think I would leave the gears for now and do the converter.
I would do a billet triple disc converter so you can lock it up at the big end of the track - like gaining another gear.
Circle D Specialties
Very consistent. Not only are you good at what you do but you seem like a really solid person too. Keep it up man!
Hey thanks a ton! I appreciate that
Love it! Cheering you on on every run.
Thanks so much!!
Great work as always!!! That was awesome
Great video can’t wait for the next one
When you are watching this video and your friend sends it to you while watching it already lol good stuff 👍
Not to bad LT, Well done. And a great video as well.
I didn't notice until now how close you are to 100k subscribers! Last I saw it was still like 60k, congrats!
Thanks! Hoping we crack 100k before the year is up!
That's one solid truck for sure. Good job Lawrence.
That’s moving for a big ute! I can imagine awd and all in launch will be interesting for sure! Also I could hear the pinging in the early runs from Australia lol that’s what it sounded like on the mic probably visible on the plugs what happened maybe a tad lean or a bit aggressive on the timing mid range but sounded better later on with more timing
LT I'm impressed, that truck is awesome.
Awesome! Congrats and awesome truck.
I’m going with a tighter converter and going down a little in the rear gear. If you can, try and see if you can turn the 2 step down some. You might look in to ditching the stock PCM and going to a Holley or something like that; where you can have more control of all the powertrain parameters. I bet that if you could do boost by gear or boost by time, control fuel/timing/boost/rpm of the 2 step, ramp in timing, control line pressure and shift points, exc. you could get in to the mid to high 10s easily. Then you could us a 50-75 shot progressively at the hit till the turbo lights for higher elevation. Ether way, love your content, love the excitement (it was palatable!), and love the build….. got me looking in to an 8.1 build of my own now!
Congrats on the faster/quicker PB!!!
thanks! its getting better each time we go out
Nice camera work and angles man I've never been drag racing but you really gave me a front row seat experience
4:50 I believe that's detonation, like piston dimpling levels of detonation haha. I hear it in most of the passes, but to much smaller degrees. As it gets darker out (cooler) it seems to go away, and then you add 2deg when it can take it with the lower IAT just barely, and you can hear it detonating in the middle of that pass. Take that timing out, and probably another 2deg RIGHT NOW or that thing will blow up tomorrow. When you pull the pistons to gap the rings for the mustang I think you'll find the pistons in need of some light sanding to knock down new dimples haha. In regards to the trans, I think it needs a torque delete kit (huge camshaft) haha.
It’s probably visible on the plugs if the electrodes are still there
Awesome runs !!
That’s a win! Great job
You've made unbelievably good progress with smart decisions and well thought out designs. You've broken new grounds and barriers. Please don't poop on everything You've worked on this far by throwing nitrous at it. You're a 10th of a second away from achieving the dream. Do it with your brains and skill just like You've done to get this far. No to nitrous
Been waiting for this. Let's get it.
Mythbusters actually showed that no tailgate was less aero. With creates a bubble in the bed and the air over the cab comes down smoothly over top of the bubble.
@@scoobee9 Okay. Ill remember that if I ever build a pickup truck.
Congratulations! N2O above 4500 so it doesn't fall on its face seems like a fun ride! Or a couple more psi... Maybe both!
I wish I had the fabrication ability you do because I would LOVE to do a 6.0 to a stock 8.1 turbo swap in my Silverado. Maybe a mild cam too. I want that amazing torque!
Congrats on the pb! Might be the convertor failing had the same issue felt like slipping and felt sluggish
Man that thing is moving good. But u mentioned spraying it. Yes sir. Lemme tell ya. Went from 11.0xx @123.42 to 10.2xx @131.32 with 14psi + a 100kit. Now 18psi and 150kit, oh boi is she rowdy!
Great work LT! Been awhile since I've commented but I'm always lurking! I am Incredibly impressed as usual. I think it would be really cool to see what you can pull out of this bad boy with another bolt on, or two. You could use nitrous and a water meth injection kit and I'm certain you will hit your ten second mark. I'm certain you mentioned it but I cannot recall, were you running e85 here? I am no tuning specialist but I can only assume you're not just letting the computer do flex fuel math and you have optimized the e85 map? I'm certain gm left alot on the table as they weren't using the fuel for its power potential
The fact your race truck held up to multiple runs without issues speaks volumes to your prowess of building a proper vehicle. Going out on a limb I think you are surprised the OEM engine is still hanging in there despite the pressue you have put it under. Love the content.
Thanks! And yes, I expected a major failure from the engine long ago, but it’s held in there like a champ
It's a Gen 7 BBC, it shares more with the Gen 3/4 SBC than a Gen 1-Gen 5 BBC.
Damn, run six was awesome, pulling in that other truck from beginning to end
A75 or 100 shot would definitely get that 10 you want. This series of videos makes me want to do a 8.1 swap in my 1990 k30 suburban
@@troydecker9685 I gotta R2500 '91 Burb, but can't decide if I wanna go Cummins or replace the 454 with another big block.
So close! Congrats!
That's pretty awesome in a big old heavy truck like that I have a 2002 GMC Sierra with the 8.1 but my transmission is a 5-speed Allison
That truck is insane, think i found the direction i want to go with my z71! I hope you building slammed AWD monsters starts a trend..
Look at the Nitrous/propane kits that twin turbo viper guys ran about 6-10 years ago. the use of a throttle body fog plate that put both fuel and oxidizer in as a gaseous form meant great distribution as well as the propane has an octane rating of 110 and is under pressure so theres no need for an auxilary fuel pump. Not to mention the expansion of both gasses in the intake would guaranteed drop intake temps. Having bed space like that just mount a forklift propane tank and a 15Lb nitrous bottle back there and you're set.
LT drunk on speed! Ha ha, love it!
Your mah 8.1 hero!!
I'm watching you on TV working on the red one on powernation TV. Both showed up at the same time. ✌🤘
thanks for watching in both places!
That was awesome!
Well done 👏
Congratulations LT 👏👏👏👏 Think if you would have removed your tailgate and passenger seat you would've gotten the 10.97-10.94 pass. Still your 11.08 is Respectable 👏👏 You could try Methanol injection to cool the incoming air.
Great video and congratulations again LT 👏👏
Keep going man love watching what you're doing My opinion not that it matters adding the weight of all wheel drive will slow the truck down The extraction on A non prepped surface will be better but at a prep track Rear wheel drive is my choice I mean the fastest GTRs have been converted to rear wheel drive And The fastest quarter mile pass is in a rear wheel drive vehicle
Way to represent for us Utah boys LT. Loved seeing you drag that single cab's ass on the last run. Can you fit a taller tire? If not, I guess I'd try a 3.08 gear. Don't know how it would hold a 100 shot of nitrous but if you used a controller and brought it in from say 3500-5000 RPM so as not to hit it hard out of the hole (stock rods in that 8.1 still I think) it might get you into the 10.8 range if you stay in the 1.6 60 ft range. In Sacramento that would have been a 10 second pass. Vegas still has some elevation but way lower than Bandimere for sure. SAC is the fastest track in the west.
love the enthusiasm
#5 I was so cheering for you 🤘
@LawrenceTolman Thank you for the great video on the 496. I have one on the stand and will use this for a reference. Is the new cam smaller than the previous one?
I would love to see a Raylar cam and a locker in the back.
Oh, and go get a Jake's 4L85!
Add spray, It will help temps and get you past that mid range lull. Great work!
Try a high viscosity hydraulic Trans fluid. It will tightened the converter.
Dude some 3.23's and you'd be 10.98 all day!! You just needed that little bit!!
Totally agree. Big Blocks LOVE to be 'worked'. 3.42 would have been my initial go too gear for that ride, but obviously it needs to work a bit harder.
.087...... do we even blink that fast?? So close. Great video again!
That was always my question with your build. Will the tranny hold up vs engine. I've always raced diesels and when it comes to that kind of torque, it's always the question of getting it to the ground.
Get it LT!
Hi, great video. Could you please explain what Pushing thru the torque converter means?
LT.... Weight reduction is your friend. Tailgate... Gone! Seats... Gone! Narrow front tires... Installed! Yeah it takes ot out of the street truck category but to get that 10.XX and go from there it's ok to do.
I was smiling the entire time watching you on the track. awesome job LT.
Lol 😂 I watch on my phone and on the 1st pass I thought the chip in the windshield was a drone. 😩
That was fricken awesome to watch. I really dig the ugly truck and plan to build one of my own but dodge ram. I would really like to see if the stock 8.1 can handle nitrous on top of everything, but also want to see an 8.1 swapped Mustang.
That was very cool LT after the abuse that stock motor has taken since building the ugly truck I can’t see how people can say that 8.1l is junk.
Can’t wait to see the ugly truck 2.0 build with that monster of a motor and awd that’s going to be insanely fast
The second pass you made when you got close to the end of the quarter your truck started making a funny sound almost like you had lifted a piston or broke a push rod. What strange was when you ran it a third time the sound was gone so be careful even simply driving it can cause your engine to blow. So if you get a chance listen to what I'm talking about watch your video and see if you can hear it too.
🔥🔥🔥 interested getting my lil 4.8 engine done like your beast of truck
The yellow car had no traction issue....looked like it was shot out of a cannon.🤠
I would say a re- gear to 3.42 or 3.23, put 2 degrees back in it to stay safe for multiple runs... take 50 lbs of weight out of it, and add a CO2 intercooler sprayer. make the engine happier and you'll be 9.5-9.8 in the quarter.
Honestly pulling the seats and tailgate probably would have gotten him the 10 he wanted.
He has 3.42s. 3.23s would be a good step forward but the tailgate is the most damage to the ET at this point I would think... he cannot leave harder right now because traction limited and the engine is making oodles of torque so he has to work on the big end. Just losing the tailgate as my fellow above said would probably have been enough for a 10.98.
9.5-9.8???? Are you high?
@@BF26595 Eh, I have seen some fluid dynamic simulations that show removing the tail gate increases drag. I am not sure that removing the weight in the tail gate wouldn't be offset by increased drag. For future runs, if he installed a hard tonneau cover and a wing on the same plane as the cover on the tail gate, I think he'd be 10.8's with what he has now.
@@actschp1 considering there is turbulence beyond the cab. Myth Busters did a test on it even.
Great job LT! I wonder how much your 60 foot would realistically improve with a 4-link and if it is really worth it?
I thought that spider on the first pass was a drone at first. Or is that rock chip? 🤣🤣
rock chip
I just watched ur video where you disassembled the transfer case 4 months ago but would like to know whats different between 01,02 and the 03-06
Man that last pass I heard it lay down well before the traps .
I was reaching for my lock up switch but it didn't work .
My experience with torque combos is locked up converter for the 2nd half of the track .
Use the torque like a diesel.
Awesome video as always 👍🏻
Yup, it just runs out of breath bad up top. I agree, lockup would make a huge difference
@@LawrenceTolman being the 8.1 has weak valve springs to start with the more boost you stuff in it the more it's taking away spring pressure pushing on the back side of the intake valve .
Exhaust side is opposite due to cylinder pressure trying to hold the valve closed .
Basically floating the intake valve at higher boost levels .
I seen you saw my post where I picked up a 8.1 and found it's a fresh rebuild inside .
It's going to be in my truck boosted for towing purposes .
Going to pick up my 6 speed Allison to put behind it in a few days. 🙂
Very impressive...
Yes some nitrous out of the hole! That mustang is going to be a pure beast with that motor! Maybe a little no prep fun?
I don't know if it matters, but if you drop the tailgate would it help?
Hey LT! Great runs - I thought you made it with the 2 degrees of timing, the 8.1 sounded like it, well, liked the extra 2 deg. Thoughts on the TC; if you are able, how about locking it up after 2500 RPM and briefly unlocking to shift. Seems that you should be able to code that in the tune - never tried it; but seems plausible.
Go Ugly, or go home. 😆
I’d love to lock the converter that would for sure help and would be very easy to add in the tune, unfortunately it’s a single disc lockup and that much torque would smoke it instantly
A lower gear will help rpm. A higher stall will help the 60ft that's already great! After that the suspension may come into play. Then a small amount of nitrous at the mid to top end may be needed but I doubt it. Tuning is key. I think your on the right track.
Love the content what boost did you end up running on the last pass?
Passes 2-6 were all on 20 psi, that’s where my current wastegate spring combo maxes out.
I would love to see the 8.1 try out those new gm big block heads that just came out. If you don't want to try different heads. Atleast do a camshaft swap. I want to hear how that 8.1 sounds with new cams. Those cams and or heads would get you 10s. You need to let more air in and out.
nice brother.
If it was me, I would have tried one more time and locked up the converter in 2nd. Worst case it would slip under that much power but it would still be less slippage than unlocked. Then, as others have said, multi-disc lockup converter. If you get a good multi-disc and lock it up under power while racing any weak clutches in the trans will start showing up and then it will be time to upgrade them.
I'd call comp cams and have them come up with a grind that will equal the torque and hp, like 1000 hp and 1000ft. They can do this but I don't know at what expense and also be able to turn it that few hundred rpm more. Also making that much torque at low rpm I don't think it will hurt to have a tighter converter and you'd hit your goal. Not really sure if you could hear what I heard but it almost sounds as if your getting a loose rod bearing cause I definitely heard some ticking that I don't think was valvetrain related when you let out of it. If you look at the last video I said I didn't think it'd hit the 10 mark but I could have been wrong if the transmission wasn't slipping, but I'm not sure exactly if it was converter slip or transmission slipping. But I definitely think the 8100 is about to come apart. Sorry buddy but it was more impressive than what I was thinking it was going to do. Great job man. Not many people build stuff that even comes close to turn consistent 11 second runs so I wouldn't be disappointed in that 10th of a second, that's a heavy truck.
What are the intake air temps on those runs? A 50-100 dry shot of NOS in the intake just to cool down the intake charge probably will get you that 10, but the transmission is going to need a tighter converter too, the NOS will make more torque compounding your problem
Dang LT that ol girl is definitely making the steam
Run a thicker fluid like the hydraulic fluid Hyguard from JD. It would be nice to see a custom converter in this rig setup for this 8.1 turbo build. Triple disc lockup.
**stands up in loud room of chatter** ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! I'LL SAY IT.......that's the fastest "boat anchor" I've ever laid eyes on. Am I right? #UglyTruck #8.1L
I'd keep working on the 8.1 until you hit a ceiling, that ugly truck is legendary just how it is.
oh for sure, we're gonna keep pushing this thing. I need a 10
@@LawrenceTolman or a taller tire
Can you go a slightly bigger tyre overall diameter to basically drop the ratio that way?
Hi, im new here but I love cars. I have an issue with my 2002 AWD DENALI's transfer case, I got one from a 2005 but I was told that it wasn't the right one how can j tell which one is the right one. Mine is the NP149 and the one I got its an 05
Hey LT I had a question I'm building up a 2004 F250 Super Duty and I'm trying to look for a cool aftermarket gauge cluster but right now I have the old dated neon green gauges and I wanted to go with a red lit set for my color palette for the truck, but I'm worried I'll buy junk and I'm on a super tight budget, just wondering if you knew any place that would be able to help me out, thank you regardless, and keep on keeping on man.
LOL, I keep thinking that stone chip is a drone.
Asking what trans you have in the truck? I've got the Allison 1000 in mine
Any day you can put it back on the trailer in running and in one piece is a good day. Looked like a fun day.
Makes me want to add a turbo set up on mine instead of the supercharger
Carnage is never good but I loved the reaction to run 5 and then the id don’t recommend this but we slapped in the moon tune 😂
Sometimes common sense and better judgment goes out the window when chasing a number lol… to the moon we send it!
