Italian say often "porta sfiga" because they're quite superstitious. "Sfiga" in Italian means "bad luck" and there are many things in Italy that lead people believing in something bad about to happen. For instance, a black cat, a broken mirror (7 years of bad luck), celebrating one's birthday ahead of time...and many others.
