I don’t think I’ve ever heard abstract composition summarized so simply before. I was familiar with checking for value contrast in black and white but never really made the connection to composition, oddly. I have been binging your videos this week. You’re such a talented artist and an excellent teacher!
I just tried playing with collage today using some cut up failed paintings, with black and grey paint. It was one of the most fun days since I started exploring art, I can’t even explain how exciting it was to compose that way. It really helped me play and try new things, which i really needed after several disappointing paint days in a row!
Excellent! I would like to begin making collages using original art/papers I have torn out from my art journals. This gives me a great example of how to get started!
So appreciate your organized approach to teaching composition. I've been looking for a systematic way to teach my middle school art students about the importance of values in abstract collage compositions. Thanks!
Thank you Janine. Interestingly ive been photographing my work in blk and white to see if its balanced. lts a really good way to find out. I really lime your idea of doing the same. I must make collage papers. l bought a big pack of tissue, but wondered what paper to use. Glad to hear copy paper is suitable as its not expensive. Thanks again ❤
Hi Alison. Photographing in black and white is so useful for figuring out compositions! For work in sketchbooks copy paper is absolutely fine. I love the mix of solid paper with more transparent tissue paper.
Love this concept! I want to use a similar method for creating scraps for art journaling purposes instead of buying textured papers. Thanks for sharing!

Aww thanks, Kate! I'm so glad this was helpful. Getting composition right is quite a learning curve, but it is mainly just values and sizes of shapes.
Exercises like this are well worth the time.
Completely agree! But honestly, I don’t make enough time for them myself.

That's amazing, thanks for sharing! What a wonderful way to reuse failed paintings too!
The guidelines about the sizes and values are a breakthrough for me
