    Love your series Ted. Unfortunately, I'm 67. Probably too late for me to get my PPL, so I fly vicariously through your videos.

    Yes put a engine monitor in if you can. You will not regret it.

      I know! at some point I have to stop upgrading- its a sickness! I need to go to UAA - upgrading airplanes anonymous... :-)

      @@Over50andLearningToFly Its this single best thing you can do to keep your engine healthy. With data logging you can actually detect a burned exhaust valve before it gets really bad.

      You do not have to get a new unit. Check eBay there are always units people have pulled when they update to newer units. It makes it an affordable way to get a engine monitor .

    But is the hot air filtered anyhow? Cold air flows by the filter in front - right? Seems that hot air is not filtered then...?

      That is correct. If I recall correctly from ground School 20 years ago, that air is not filtered.

    Why do people still use it when there's no any icing conditions? Why would you even use Carb Heat in Florida during a landing?

    • @Over50andLearningToFly
      @Over50andLearningToFly  3 роки тому

      Anytime there is moisture or potential moisture you should use it. Carb ice can happen in 70 degree temps- the air is flowing through the venturi in the carb and can freeze pretty quickly- its there for a reason. Thanks for watching!

    Ted, are you going to fire sleeve your 2 new lines and the hard line from the gascaltor to the fuel pump. That's one less spot that can vapor lock! The other mod I have seen on another straight (n2895x) is getting rid of all the garbage in the lower cowl and making it like the As& Bs and using the air valve off a pa28 140-160hp it makes getting the lower cowl on and off a total snap!!

    It brings warm air, but not combustion gasses, to the carb? How does it separate the combustion gasses?

    • @Over50andLearningToFly
      @Over50andLearningToFly  4 роки тому +1

      The air is heated off of the exhaust manifold, there are no combustible gasses - just warm air...

    All great videos.
    I just got my license, at 50 , and now looking for a plane. Would you recommend an older plane or spend little more up front for newer ( like 1998-2002) maybe Cessna 182, and maybe not have to deal with as many upgrades or maintenance issues ?
    Thank you

    • @Over50andLearningToFly
      @Over50andLearningToFly  4 роки тому

      Terry Melton Absolutely. If you have the money go ahead and spend it and get the airplane you want because The maintenance items are a drag because your planes down for a few weeks every time something happens and a newer plane you’ll be able to grow into and the avionics are even more important. I am so glad I upgraded my plane to the G fives in the Garman and that is money well spent because I have very safe equipment in my airplane. So go ahead and spend the money and get a good airplane!!! Thanks so much for watching!

    Great video! That air inlet looked scary. Did that happen in one year, or was it missed at the last annual?
    BTW definitely get a good digital engine monitor. It can often give you a warning before the engine fails -- like finding hot exhaust valves before they fail. Do you know Mike Busch's videos/books? Check out his youtube channel at Savvy Aviation.
    (I don't have to worry about carb heat any more, I now have a fuel-injected airplane! But I do have to worry about a different set of problems...)
