I got to sit in the engineers seat in 1989 when 4449 was parked in Yakima, Wa. The night hostler let me blow the whistle repeatedly When I saw her again in 1990 @ Yakima, I was politely told that we couldn't sound the whistle since the prisoners in the county jail (next to the tracks) had complained that it was keeping them awake. I said "What? You mean like this? and promptly sounded a long blast. This got a lot of laughter from others in the cab, however I did not repeat my deed.
@EMD645E Without Doyle or the efforts of the Union Pacific Steam Crew, We'd never have a chance to experience the AWESOME sights & sounds of these magnificent jewels of railroad history.
You're a lucky fellow, in my opinion. I'd give just about anything for a cab ride in a big steamer like this, although even a small engine would be a special treat. I also think it neat that the crew let you have a go at the whistle, which is always a pleasure to hear, and a special privilege indeed. I run simulators and live steam models for the time being, but one day I'm hoping to get a shot at the engineer's seat and run the full sized version, even if only for a day.
@bjlrbern You've got a good pattern for that whistle, Ross! I didn't think you'd have any pattern as good as the one you used at that railroad crossing! The main thing to do is lean out the window and blast that whistle at each crossing, and have a good whistle pattern.
wow buddy thats a real honor! back here in california at orange empire the guys put me to work and make me run the injector which is kinda fun but i wanna sit engineer seat!
@bjlrbern Ross, You've got a good method for that whistle! Is this locomotive you're operating a steam locomotive, because when you leaned out the window and pulled the whistle, I could tell it was possibly a steam locomotive, which my dad and I refer to as a pufferbelly. I've ridden on a train, and it was for the Fall Foliage Train Ride, and the cars were old Pennsylvania Railroad train cars, which are beautiful cars to ride in!
Well, looks like you had fun! I remember my first time seeing 4449 at Railfair '99 when I was about 4, and I recall that they let me blow the whistle. It was quite loud for a 4 year old! I hope she comes back down to California soon, so I can see her again. haven't seen her since Railfair.
The Nordic Stag i know it has an air horn, i think it has a leslie a200, i do have a pet peeve when people use the wrong terms and for a second i forgot and thought you were talking about the whistle
i want to get it on TRAINZ SIMULATOR 2009 could some one send the link? Also the engine is like "Sexy" For me. you choose your opinion. I really like that train

I'm sure the people at the road crossing were all like "WTF!!!! Is that a kid driving the friggin train???"
LOL
Sp 4449 is my favorite train
Great video of good whistle action
Well, 4449's whistle is off of a Great Northern Z-Class Challenger... sounds pretty good :)

4449 is so cool
Awsome! Must be pretty cool to be able to be in the helm of such a historic and famous locomotive
My Dream.....
Congratulations! Life just doesn't get any better than this, IMHO. Beautiful work on the whistle!
You, sir, are hands-down the luckiest guy in the world. I am insanely jealous: that's my life's dream right there. Congrats, man.

i love it :)
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954. Now it's to the people taking pictures from those damn CELLPHONES.
couldnt you just ask doyle if you can sit in the cab
i always want to do that since i was a little boy
Jim van der Kolk. Doyle doesn't own the 4449. The city of Portland does. He is just the head engineer.
"Cannonball 4449!!!"
@bjlrbern are you the one blowing the whistle
did he tell you the name of the whistle?

Since you were in the cab, can you answer a long standing question for me? Where is the control for the horn in 4449's cab?
The Nordic Stag you mean the whistle!
No, I mean the Airhorn.. Unless, you were unaware 4449 has both a steam whistle and air horn..?
The Nordic Stag
i know it has an air horn, i think it has a leslie a200, i do have a pet peeve when people use the wrong terms and for a second i forgot and thought you were talking about the whistle
