Learned the Tarantella dance when I was 12/13, got into punk at 15, got really into ska not long after... After a few years rediscovered folky type stuff, few years later discovered Bartok and the bridge between classical, folk and modern music. Never did I think one band could combine all of these things, and have one of the best sets of fans I've come across. Thank you Gogol Bordello for confounding my expectations.
In Europe we have growing problems with people´s "ethnical" and "religious" ideologies. It is as dangerous as racism. - Larst time I thought about somebody´s "race" must have been lightyears ago by the way.
Best track on the album. Favorite song from my favorite band.. I wish they didn't change their sound with the new album but I can always go back to this when I want to hear them at their best.
I see a lot of confusion here, lezginka, tarantella. Hudz explains in one of his interviews that Italian and Georgian rhythms are identical, he just turned it into super taranta- he is fucking globalizer!! Total genius!! LONG LIVE HUDZ!!
People you should know that this song is inspired by southern italian music. I know it can sound like other kinds of traditional music, but the title itself removes any doubt: "Taranta" referes to Tarantella and at a certain point the rythm changes abruptly and the singer says "Pizzica Pizzica", another kind of traditional music from Salento (in Apulia). Greetings from salento... Come and visit this beautiful region of the Mediterranean, and you'll hear with your own ears!
In the south Italy we got that tradition very deep inside our soul and blood about the tarantula bites who make you change in something like sorcerer or a sort of clairvoyant
weee viva gogol bordello!!! finalmente qualcuno che ne capiscie qualcosa di musica folkloristica italiana...awsome interpretation of a tarantella/salterello =) I love these guys!!!
I just saw them last week here in San Diego. It was the best live concert of my life. Check out their new CD/DVD that just came out on Oct. 6th. "Live From Axis Mundi"
@broncocefalo It is a mix of styles. Lezginka and pizzica. Both are frantic styles of music, just like this track. Eugene also says "Lezginka!" at around :53 or somewhere after.
@mrjacobvyork - Technically, Taranta means Tarantula, a type of spider that you've probably heard of. Taranta is also the name of an ancient colony in southern Italy, the city now known as Taranto. Eugene Hutz, the singer of Gogol Bordello, has said it's also a reference to Tarantella, which is a traditional type of Italian music with a fast tempo, which originated there. I suggest you go read look up the word Tarantella on Wikipedia. It's very interesting.
zalypan- hey good for you..you know the frontman of 100's of bands is from my home country..what are you trying to be proud of???....and FukN love these guys...
@erikabuiraypunto Taranta is a folk dance which takes its name from tarantism, an alleged envenomation popularly believed to result from the bite of a kind of wolf spider called a "tarantula".
@mrjacobvyork yes, it's italian folk music coming from south of italy. Called taranta, tarantella, pizzica, pizzicarella - they're almost the same dance!
holy shit, this is good. Only just discovering this awesome band and every one of the songs are just oozing musical genius-mucus all over me. Oh Bath me in your divine mucus!
@meraclees pratically taranta was used to fight spiders bites, the wounded had to dance till ecstasy, sweating the poison dripped off. This is why the rhytm sounds like hypnotic.
This is the fifth GB video in a row for me. Checking it out. Good for me to hear there are some players in the band, and this song is a vehicle for them. Other tunes all have great spirit and high energy, but not so musically interesting. Good party, get up offa that thing style.
well i can not say where this music is from, it is a mix of many elements and turn out great, me iam from mexico but i really enjoy this music so much passion and feelings into this song please enjoy it everyone!!!
@justohavealook I sure know that soldierside77 is correct. That dance is from Kalabria region(many people there have Hellenic blood and their idioms are pure Hellenic words) and was the "cure" for the bite of one particullar little spider.According to tradition that spider was biting only women that were married sailors or fishermen.(But what i really believe is that because of the long absence of their husbands and in order not to let themselfs sleep with others they danced this until collapse;)
@Raffyka84 - No, it's not strictly Taranta, but it was very heavily Taranta-inspired if you ask the band. They took some Taranta influences and added crazy vodka-infused gypsy punk rock and called it Super Taranta! It may not be Taranta, but it does fucking ROCK!! \m/(>.
@SoldierSide77 System of a down has a song called Boom that has that similar feel and sound and it definitely goes "boom BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!" maybe its what he is lookin for???
Learned the Tarantella dance when I was 12/13, got into punk at 15, got really into ska not long after... This song was on my half-marathon playlist. Really helped me get over the hump during the middle of the race. Great beat!!
What I love about Gogol Bordello is the diversity of both the artists and the fans.
Music cures racism.
+Detryck Moore And breeds nationalism.
+havingyarr U wot? How so?
Scrub Free In my case I guess. I got really into Russian and German history because I love their marching music.
Oh please, don't start with that annoying antiracist propaganda here
In Europe we have growing problems with people´s "ethnical" and "religious" ideologies. It is as dangerous as racism. - Larst time I thought about somebody´s "race" must have been lightyears ago by the way.

First time I heard them last week with Madonna in Hungary . It was f*cking awesome, its a shame that i didnt known them before. Five stars :)
\m/(>.
3.56 up to the end makes me feel in a way that I CAN NOT explain ! Actually the whole song but that part kills me !
It,s from georgian melody...
You are correct, Giovanni! Ciao!
@SaladGirlie - sure does! Thanks for sharing. ;)
@SoldierSide77 System of a down has a song called Boom that has that similar feel and sound and it definitely goes "boom BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!" maybe its what he is lookin for???
some parts are from georgian dance music!!! very nice!
Taranta is an old style of Italian folk music from the Italian province of Taranto. Look up Tarantella on Wikipedia if you like.
