Thumbs up if you think these restoration updates should be done on a monthly basis!
Absolutely - they're fascinating. but maybe every 2 to 3 months. Progress in this game is slow ....
Jay could start a whole new channel just showing the guys working on his cars.
I would definitely watch that.
That's a brilliant Idea!. I really enjoyed this video.
Webcam opportunity right there.....
I'm in
That's what I was thinking when looking at the finished brass water jackets for the Benz. Would have loved to see the work as it was being done - kind of "how it's made" for car restorations.
These are my favourite type of videos on this channel.
Agreed.
I could watch hours and hours of the guys behind the scenes just working on all the projects ! Thanks for the update Jay !!
Agreed!
Agreed, amazing! I am slightly frustrated I can't do the same, not jealous, just frustrated. Not only you have to be seriously wealthy but, you also have to live in a country where you can have such a space and still live in or around a big city where you can work and earn enough money for that kind of project! You can forget about that in western Europe :(
Same here. The craftsmanship is amazing and I like that they also restore the less valueable or desirable classics.
That brasswork was a piece of art!
I agree. And that is going to be a beautiful engine when they are done. And it's kind of funny because Jay's shop is putting German engineering to shame. Because they should have used brass instead of steel in the first place.
+Chico Little What do you know about engineering 100 years ago? American smartass...
Chico Little Remember, it was not put together for longevity. It was built for racing and because of the rate of how cars were improving back then, it would have become obsolete within a year or two at best.
Quite often racing/record attempt cars will be built with very fine tolerances and with whatever was the most cost effective material to use. I don't think it's about bad engineering, but that they would have never expected the car to still be around 100 years later. German engineering has always been a benchmark in industry since the turn of the last century. I think saying that Jay's garage and team are putting it all to shame is a little unfair and harsh. They have the luxury of hindsight as well as the 100 years of progress that has happened since the car was originally designed and put together.
It's nice that there is room for the guys to work on their own projects.
And I suspect he's footing the bill for Bernard's new sidecar. Great for when your boss wants to take your ride out for a spin and screws it up.
Keep the workers happy there's a good idea lost to greed.
youve gotta love leno, his enthusiasm for all things vehicular is completely infectious, a man who's totally engaged. Great show
And the fact that he has so many projects going on just makes me dizzy sometimes lol (Just imagine the amount of tools he must have, oh, my lol)
Amazing enthusiasm, indeed.
Those brass water-jackets are works of art! That is going to be an amazing machine when it's done.
Jay is a true petrolhead. Taking time and energy to share his hobby with us!
So glad to see the Fasier Nash project. Still don't understand the chain drive so looking forward to a feature piece on that!
his garage is like a time machine
It's good to see Bernard back explaining technical stuff.
I could watch this all day. Jay should let someone hang around the workshops and record stuff all the time.
love the resto shows, maybe do them every 3 months, and would like to see an update on the ecojet car
Loved that last bit "Yes i'm wearing the same cloth, and i haven't cut my hair".
Had to rewatch the very ending. “Yes I’m wearing the same clothes, and I haven’t combed my hair.” Jay you are still funny as heck! Still giggling even now.
I just love it every time he says: "C'mon let me show you..." And starts wobbling excited away
It must be great to work for Jay, he really appreciates his employees work and is always so kind to them!
I like that he also lets them work on their own projects in the garage too.
I really love the restoration blogs, as basically everyone on your channel I'm just looking at your collection with star tinted eyes, and seeing the behind the scenes bits really shows us how hard/rewarding it really is.
keep the in depth stuff coming Jay. the newer bits are entertaining, but us motorheads like seeing the cars REALLY inside and out.
It's cool you let the guys use the facilities. Thanks again for letting us hang out, it means a lot.
Jay i just LOVE these restoration blogs !!!!! The 22 min. seemed like 5 min. I could watch this for hours. So much interesting and cool stuff going on. Please try to do them more often!! Thanks Jay.
These are by far my favorite kind of videos that Jay does
My favorite thing about Jay Leno's Garage is all the high tech equipment they have to make custom parts and so on. So much more than a simple car collection / garage. It's a full on restoration factory.
Ma, can't wait to see the 1921 Benz Mercedes finished up. That engine is going to be beautiful!
Saddens me to think that one day not so far in the future Jay will be gone and that entire shop will close doors. Hopefully someone else will take the torch and continue to run the garage.
I've thought the same thing many times.
nah itll be converted into a museum then
I'm sure Jay will be delighted to know you're measuring him up for a wooden overcoat‼️💀💀💀
I hope so, I'd pay a LOT to go see it...
"Petersen Auto Museum" ?? Could end up there . . . or could be auctioned off.
By far my favorite videos are your restoration blogs. I like the others, too...but these are my favs. Thanx, Jay for some great technical entertainment.
I wish Jay would do more videos like this. Restoration blogs, videos around the garage showing his collection. And not just the cars but the memorabilia and other items he's gathered together over the years. I far prefer these things to the videos about just the cars.
the update videos are my favorites. There are quite a few projects that Jay has the resources to save, that otherwise wouldn't likely ever be done, and his crew of guys saving these cars, restoring them completely, will allow these cars and bikes to live on long after we are all gone. Thanks Jay!
I really enjoy these Restoration Blogs. Thanks Jay.
i think jay just mentioned for the 5,396th time that he used to work at a mercedes dealer
Lots of noobs watch this channel every week.
During his college years
I'm one of those noobs that keep coming back. Guess I'll just denoob myself and subscribe.
Thank you Jay for taking on the projects no one else could or would and restoring these automotive treasures.
Thanks for keeping "alive" these old machines.
jimmy at 11:50 use to work for boyd coddington i remember him from american hotrod
I bet he is happy working somewhere that appreciates him now!
My favorite kind of video
It's amazing, all of the things that you go through, to repair and restore these old vehicles. It's great that you, and Bernard walked away, from that burning race bike!
jay best show on yt or tv!! could you do a show about your employees. as in what their day looks like from unlocking the front door to leaving at the end of the day. i dont think many realize how many work for you and what they all do.
Lots of cool projects. True love for the classics.
Ahhh yisss... love watching these restoration VLOGs
Jay is the self proclaimed lifetime president of the more money than brains club and he's doing an excellent job.
That Christie fire truck is one of my favorite vehicles in the Garage... Absolute engineering marvel.
I admire the work you do to keep the history of the vehicles you have. Love this channel.
1:20 Its called metalock in Sweden, a similar invention, and an old one to.
Yes....interesting. I'm pretty sure I've seen this in Hungary as well when I was a kid.
I love these updates. Jay, I have a source for those Mercedes W111 a/c knobs at a much lower cost, but it looks like you've got it covered. However, if you need the little colored plastic segments that go into the wood trim around them I can point you the right way there too.
A close friend who sadly died a couple of years ago, was one of the top wood restoration guys in the country, specializing in Mercedes. In fact, I'm pretty sure he restored the wood that's in the Mercedes 600 you bought from Karl M. He spent a lot of time tracking down sources for little woodwork insert trim parts like those.
By the way, those chrome wheel arch trims and belt line moldings on the 3.5 coupe are not original, but I'm sure you knew that.
That silver Mercedes coupe is sooo nice. I cant imagine rolling around in that thing in the late 60s early 70s in europe, you mustve felt like a king.
I love jay, all these priceless cars and expensive projects, but still a frugal man. I"M NOT PAYING FOR STUPID KNOBS! Lets just make them :)
Yes, he probably passed on getting a $4000 Armani suit, for instance lol
(To my knowledge, he has no passive income, perhaps that's why he is frugal.)
Very good shows Jay.
Those cylinders on the Benz-Mercedes are familiar to anyone whose worked on radial aircraft engines like the Pratts or Wrights. They made then that way so they would eliminate the head gasket and have one less thing to worry about. There are early photos of cars like the Benz flying over the infamous bumps at Brooklands with the whole car airborne, something you didn't wasn't to do just before the turns.. Thanks for the updates Jay, and thanks for the video.
He always seems surprised that we like these blogs. Well, they are at least as interesting as the garage ones. A great supplement to the garage-concept. I learned about Evans and will be converting in short time.
Yes I am wearing the same clothes and no I haven't combed my hair! Hahh
For about two seconds I though Jim's surname was 'Scortina'. I smiled and laughed out loud.
Jim's wife sounds like a keeper. Lotus ermine white sounds like the colour of Jay's hair.
Code 9 it should be. Or is in Oz at least.
I like the way Jay tells people about good stuff he's found.
Jay, this episode was great. Anything that sends me down the "I've never heard of that!" rabbit hole of research for an hour is priceless. Lock and Stitch. Awesome. Thank you for all of these videos.
lock n stitch is the best repair I've found for Fords that eject spark plugs
Their website has some serious information on it about repairing cast iron. And it's not just for cars. They do huge industrial repairs too. And oven welding at high enough temps to use cast iron filler rods. These people seem as passionate about repairing cast iron as Jay is about restoring cars.
Very Nice Jay ...you have soul like ...Janis joplin....when it comes to cars you get down and boogy.
mr. Leno you are probably my favorite celebrity in the world. my father and I used to watch the tonight show when you were on it and both enjoy your sense of humor and your love for automobiles. the videos are great I hope to meet you one day.
The Cunningham.WOW.The interior. I think it's one of your best builds. The back story is really something. The fact that the guy built the cars, just so he could go racing.Whats left to say.
You should call these Restologs
I was thinking Restoblogs
Restovlogs.
I was thinking press-to-logs.
i was thinking product (s) of the day o log
I LOVE THESE UPDATES - WHAT WAS THE BODY ON THE GROUND BEHIND THE BURNT OUT MOTORCYCLE?
Yes Jay, the white one, it looks like fiberglass but maybe not. What is it?
Looks like a Lotus Elan body.
He talked about it in one of the old update videos, I don't remember which one though.
@@petertimowreef9085 Yes it is an Elan body.
I remember when Jimmy worked for Boyd. So happy to see he ended up in a more stable and fitting shop👌.
I always really enjoy the restoration blogs. I think more of the repair and restoration work should be filmed, i'd enjoy watching that on a regular basis.
Well, come on, we will show you!
So many times :D
Is Jimmy the guy from "American Hot Rod "?
the guy that quit cos he couldn't handle the chaos of that place?
+MrBfeboi yeah , I remember.... missed this show , American chopper and overhaulin
He also did a tank for Trev on Great Biker Build-off. Was he on OCC as well for a bit?
yeah he went nutso on that show
See how Jay said earlier that you cannot restore/rebuild these cars in a couple of weeks. Then we get to see Jimmy, who worked for Boyd, who would want cars complete in a month and it was just straight stupid stuff going on there. You can just tell Jimmy enjoys this type of shop and I do not blame him one bit.
These are my favorite shows. I am such a conservationist, and restoring and bringing back to life is my thing. I am so glad that you are taking responsibility for these treasures. Thank you.
Yep - Steel cars are real cars.
Generations will thank you in the Future, noting but admiration for your fine work
Hey Jay...where are things with that Volvo Resto-Mod project?
wondering the same thing. im guessing its done because it had progressed pretty well since the last update but it wasnt done. maybe he forgot about it. maybe we'll find out next week
Please, please, please, Jay, when are we going to get a ride in the Dyna Panhard, which is usually in the "French" area where you do many of your presentations?
@@omarjette3859 I would love to see a video on that. I see it in the videos and it looks too neat to be ignored.
@@jacobbelcher3512 Hi Jacob, I believe that ep. of JLG is searchable. We had these (Panhards) in Canada, back in the day. And I once had a Citroen DSM21 similar to Jay's.
@@jacobbelcher3512 ua-cam.com/video/zcfVO6-UHgY/v-deo.html
Please keep the 911 brown.
I hope he does as well.
i believe he said re-paint. but i might have misheard. dont see why he would change the color. if you look at his entire collection he tries to have a variety of different colors. if i met Jay id be so curious to find out one of the simplest answers possible and that is what his favorite color is. because i dont think it comes across on the cars. silver ish grey (or gray) seems to be the most popular though
+Patrick Pelletier only Jay would luck into getting the most coveted vehicle amongst the Brown Car Appreciation Society: a chocolate brown 911.
+Patrick Pelletier he has a gorgeous brown Mercedes 600 Grosser.
Abe Froman of course. It's Jay Leno. How couldnt he. What surprises me is he doesnt have a Singer or an Icon product for that matter. At least from my knowledge.
Wow, those Cunningham gauges look like giant watch faces. Definitely works of art………I was stunned!
I remember Jimmy from a few episodes of Biker Build Off too. Occasionally a builder, like Trevelen, would bring him onboard when they needed something special fabricated. He's a master!
Jes thats not a garage its a factory..How big is that place Jay?
It's a pretty big place, located near the Bob Hope airport, it houses over 200 vehicles.
I read somewhere it's 120,000 sq feet in total
I'm hoping to get to the L.A. area sometime soon, and plan on going by Jay's garage on the off chance someone might be outside and willing to chat.
this is a common way to fix cracks in Ford flat heads.
There are good heads available aftermarket now - possibly easier than trying to chase cracks...
But not so much blocks.
No. The typical process for repairing block cracks is to drill the crack and install tapered pins like a stack of dimes overlapping until the entire crack is "filled". Surprisingly, it's not "that" expensive to have done. It was about $100 an inch the last time I had one repaired (no idea if that's a linear scale of cost, but a 2" crack in a lifter valley was $200 when I had it done on a SBC block... this was in the late '90s though).
It's called 'pin welding', I'm surprised Jay never heard of it before.
***** Right. You can't weld either cast iron or aluminum without risking it warping. Cast iron often degrades to graphite over time due to heat, so welding is OUT! Pin-welding is indeed using tapered threaded pins, drilling each hole partially into the two on either side creating a continuous surface. This process is a refinement of that process, but fundamentally the same.
The Restoration Blogs are the best! Not only is it great to know that you are restoring all these treasures for folks to enjoy in the future, it's great to see how wonderfully documented the restorations are. Thanks for the good work.
Finn
a fine blend of old and new technology coming together to keep these cars on the road
Where does all the money come from to pay for these projects?
It wasn't like he was a late night talk show host on a major network
From his pocket
Not having kids!
Talent, skill, and a sense of humor.
He's worth around $350 million
Absolutely fascinating. I love that these relics are being saved from the scrap pile, and love that in this small way we get to take part in the process.
I love seeing these restorations. The number of things going on in his work shop. more of these please
Thank youJay for special episodes where you show detail of the car that is being worked on. Excellent good old classic show
Love the acoustics in the engine room, very clean without the echo you get in the larger areas.
Thanks for the update, you've got a great collection and we're all better car guys because you share.
The water jacket fabrication is amazing. That original design is kind of crazy.
It's nice to see a Volvo 544 in the left foreground of the last shot. I loved my 544. Very basic car, but extremely comfortable, and it was so easy to drive, it was like a horse that knew its way home.
When I was a child, I read about a British car with a fixed head. It sounded awfully impractical. When I grew up, I found out that "head" was British for top, and the world made sense again. Now Jay brings along the Benz-Mercedes and reintroduces me to that crazy fixed head concept from my childhood. Well, as Mark Blankfield used to say, "I can handle it."
Plenty of early cars had fixed cylinder heads. How about Bugatti and Bentley?
I have known about and followed Jay since the early days. American Hot Wax! I play music so it hit home for me. Long live Rock and Roll and Jay Leno! You are an American Icon. Great video. Please do many more! Thankz
Jay I love it when you say a good word for the pros who do you’re work.
Got to hand it to Jay the team he has assembled, the restorations, the preservation of history, the commitment, the whole shebang. The investment of dollars is mind boggling. Got to be north of 100 million between, the building, the cars, the equipment, etc. 100 million is probably not even close.
Jimmy from Boyd Coddington's American Hot rod!!!. Glad to see such a skilled metal worker is at Jay Leno's garage.
JAY, YOU REALLY HAVE AN EXCELLENT GROUP OF SKILLED CRAFTSMEN, PROBABLY NONE BETTER !
Leno's garage and restoration videos are the best.
Jay this has to be one of the best resto videos you've done. I have to back and find the 1913 fire engine as it looked amazing. The Lock and stitch was very cool, and the crack about going to the Proctologist to have dental work done had me spitting my coffee. I so miss you on the Tonight Show. Don’t even watch anymore. Guess i’m too old as it’s just stupid most of the time. Look forward to whatever you have coming next week.
Beautiful machine work and fittings for the Benz Mercedes. Can't wait to see this car brought back to life!
I can see it now. 50 Years from now Jay Leno's Garage will be a museum you can get private showings to. $150 a ticket, you get to get in the cars, start the cars and drive a couple of them, all with a guide of course. Each car will have a small stand next to it with a button you press to hear a video recording of Jay Leno showing and talking about the car to you.
Need to have Restoration Blogs more often.
best UA-cam channel Jay. no dopey ads, no biases, just a love for machines. I'd work there in a second :) top man!
seeing a complete car is always cool but the average person has no idea just how much can be involved in bringing a car back.you have several luxuries that simply were just Star Trek dreams 30 years ago. this is now a new fav vid from your series, Thanks.
I'm wearing the same clothes, haven't combed my hair or taken a bath Jay! I gotchu beat! Love this stuff, can't get enough of it. Keep up the awesome work sir!
love these type of shows, made me laugh when you said you haven't changed your clothes or combed your hair your the ultimate Car Guy.
What a wonderful workshop. This is a side of your life with the collection that deserves its own series.
It's a complex and fascinating archeology of moving vehicles, in itself. Uniquely interesting. Because by doing it, you discover how these vehicles were made - and the many problems those ingenious people overcame in making them decades ago. I suspect this is almost the best part of the work today. You clearly love it.
Jay, you have real craftsmen working there. It seems that not only do they know what they are doing, they like doing it.
Wonderful, wonderful !
Man, six months! Where does the time go? Seems like yesterday. Thanks for posting Jay.
Jeez I love Jay Leno, such an interesting dude! It's such a joy to watch a man talk about his passion. I didn't watch the Tonight Show much, but this show has me coming back every week!
It's like getting hooked on drugs (watching Jays' garage) The good thing is you don't get arrested.
I love this show. He's a very fortunate man to have this super museum and machine shop.
Thank You Mr. Leno. Thanks for showing the guys behind the magic. I hope this isn't the last we see. Good to know Bernard wasn't hurt in the fire. I hope to one day just sit down and talk shop with you. Safe Miles!
