- A young boy struggles mentally in a new city.

Will is a young boy from England who has relocated with his mother to his uncle's home in Texas after a terrible personal loss. But the move has been a challenging adjustment, and Will is having a hard time at his school. His attention wanders; he can't complete his work. And his teacher is concerned.
The pressure is getting to Will, and he doesn't quite fit in with the other students, with his different accent. Despite an understanding teacher, soon Will begins to act out in other ways, as his grief over his father's death remains unprocessed and threatens his educational future.
Directed and written by Laurie J. Gardiner, this short drama is a thoughtful coming-of-age narrative full of depth and power, going deep into the many layers of emotion and memories of its young protagonist. Toggling between past and present with lyrical cinematography and camerawork, we see the defining trauma that has upended Will's once normal, loving childhood, as well as how his difficulty in processing that harrowing event is shaping his present. Grieving and depressed, he finds himself caught up in an unsympathetic educational institution that threatens to lose Will in the cracks.
The film has the foundation of impressive writing and editing, deftly juggling the many memories that have formed Will's character so far. The transitions are driven by emotion, giving the film a compelling clarity, aided by a sensitive, nuanced performance by young actor Kenyan Ebole-Gordon as Will. He plays Will with compelling restraint, often withdrawn and depressed. He knows something is not right within himself, but as a child, he still can't articulate his specific feelings, and key adults around him fail to see his mental health challenges.
Taking the time to develop Will as an emotional entity and show the trauma that influences him, the storytelling adds another layer, as his tumultuous past exerts itself in difficult behavior at school, and his stern teacher wants to put Will in a remedial education program, seeing his behavior as ADHD-related. Though another teacher tries to raise the possibility that Will's problems stem from PTSD, and not ADHD, his teacher refuses to listen, set on putting Will on a track that will likely alter his future forever.
In many ways, REMEDIAL ends with a cliffhanger, as we're unsure of Will's ultimate fate in the educational system, if he'll ever get help for his emotional difficulties, or whether or not the school system and its educators will fail him. Emotionally immersive and thought-provoking as a portrait of a grieving child, the film raises unsettling and important questions about how children's behaviors are intertwined with their emotional lives -- and whether or not our schools fail to take that complexity in mind when slotting "difficult" children into tracks that will likely label them for life. Where Will ends up is a question that will linger in viewers' minds, well after the film has ended, and hopefully will expand the compassion and lens we use to examine our children and the schools we entrust them to. - Фільми й анімація
I couldn't understand the mother's actions. Clearly, she was grieving. Yet, it didn't seem to occur to her that her son was grieving, too!
She just lost the love of her life, she became a single mother, she now has a single income to rely on, etc., etc. she was dealing with a LOT! Not everyone can cope immediately
@JinjiSayson I agree. It just seemed that by the end, she was going along with the teacher who wanted to put him in special education classes.
She accuses him of her husband's death.
That poor kid. Seems like an only child as well. That had to suck not to have anyone to lean on. I probably would have ran away.@@ellianakan2941
Excellent depiction of how kids -especially black kids - too often get misdiagnosed. That teacher should be fired for not taking the coaches view into consideration.
I think mostly girls, of any race are underdiagnosed, actually with ADHD but also Autism. Many get diagnosed in adulthood
This was excruciating to watch, because it's so so real. Beautiful film with lovely actors.
I agree with the teacher being fired. She's not a damn doctor, let the doctor diagnose that kid. And she's bragging to the coach about how long she's been at the school.
100%! My brother started acting out after our baby brother passed away, and he was treated as a "problem" in high school instead of treating the actual problem, which was dealing with grief at a young age. 😢
take the kids to swimming lessons💖
I believe the “so called child experts” need to re-educate themselves versus pulling
random diagnosis out of a HAT.
How many kids do you have, and what are there IEPs?
Is your child difficult to handle? Well, just take him to any non-specialist doctor, label him ADHD and drug him up.
ok thats illegal 😂
Big Pharma loves it😢
@@masonexe7940Está claro , que está siendo sarcástico .
I understand that the mom is grieving too but she is so very unnecessarily harsh towards her son. I wonder if she blames him for her husband's death?
I was thinking the same thing , i did NOT like how she was behaving . And she says nothing to defend her son,and instead snaps at him and just sits there while that nasty teacher diagnoses her son.
I think you hit the nail on the head with her blaming her son...and thus only focusing on her grief and loss...and not those of her son. And therefore her behavior will most likely result in her losing 2 members of her family (father & son)...as she sacrifices her son to a system that will chew him out and most likely turn him into a delinquent...who will then resent her for not advocating for him.
Children and adolescents who actually have PTSD are frequently misdiagnosed with ADHD as hyperactivity, hyper-arousal and the inability to maintain attention are all symptomatic of the former as well.
Oh my. That is so horrible. Those poor babies. wow.
If you see something, say something doesn't just apply to un attended parcels. Thing is, if no one does anything about it, it's still a possibly dangerous un attended parcel.
Kids are so awful sometimes. It’s up to adults to look for signs of bullying and stop the abuse.
That teacher was blind to all that, wasn't she?
Notice how the kids who bullied him will likely get away with it 🙄, i know the mother is grieving aswell... but that was her perfect chance to defend her son and she should have called out that teacher. the only one who seemed to care was the coach, and in the end he left not knowing what to do .
@@gemstar7286 As a mom, my mother lion would have come out then!
@@janicemahan4772 Exactly 💯. This mother seems to blame her son for the husband dying or something🤦♀️, really unfair. It looks like nobody is fighting his corner. This is why kids grow up sadly with so many damaging issues 😒.
@@gemstar7286 Yes, I think she did blame her son. And in turn, his blaming him escalated.
She is not bullying this kid!
People mad, but the PTSD is obvious. Teacher can't make a clinical diagnosis or put him on medication. No reason to think he'd be misdiagnosed when a layman can see he's not ADHD. Nothing to get spun up about, it's a short film.
This is totally true that a lot of children do get misdiagnosed but in this short film the mother didnt tell that teacher that he had just lost his father. They do have problems trying to adapt and come to terms with their loss of a parent. His father was his best friend and he dearly wanted him to learn to swim. This story also had me in tears as they are powerful stories but very true. I hope the grieving kids out there really do get the help they need, the correct help not the wrong diagnosis. R.I.P. to who ever you have all lost.
I agreed with the coach 100% about PTSD. And the other teacher come bragging about how many years shes been at the school. Heck if the school didn't have stuck up snotty teachers like that woman a lot of kids would be heard and understood.
I applaud the coach and not the stuck up English teacher.
She was so condescending towards the coach and the kid , she's in the wrong job.
The acting was so moving and realistic. It brings home the reality of misdiagnosis in children, it brought me to tears. Such superb acting, especially by the child.
I want very much to love this film, but the mother's inability to explain her son's circumstances to the teacher doesn't make any sense.
Exactly !!!....Massive oversight from the director / storyline. I hate it when filmmakers take such an important factual topic and then go and mess it up like they have done here
@@goonaa6924 The mother is in deep grief and not well herself. She may also think the teacher knows.
@@VeretenoVids That's the whole point..... if she thinks the teacher knows then fight for your kid to explain his behaviour....if the teacher doesnt know ...TELL THE TEACHER ! No excuse here...yes, mother is in deep grief but this outcome has alot to do with her
@@goonaa6924 I wasn't defending the mother, but rather providing one of many reasons why she might not have spoken up. Yes, ideally she would, but in her absolutely undone state she herself doesn't know exactly what's "wrong" with her child. In this film, it is to drive home the point that sometimes parents cannot fight. Perhaps giving into the teacher--an authority figure--is a self-preservation mechanism. Plenty of "well" parents have done this too. Again, not saying the mother's actions can be excused, just saying that the mother's actions as are completely plausible and not a reason to judge the film negatively. The film is about adults failing children and all of the adults currently in this child's life are doing exactly that.
@@goonaa6924 She cant even fight for herself. The mom has checked out and her son in a new environment, had no one to connect with. The PE teacher was a potential but it takes time to earn his trust.
Intense and heartbreaking. So well done! Kenyon Ebole-Gordon will be one to watch!
Seeing Chris Attoh in an Omeleto short was not on my list of things today ... good to see he's working though!
Some teachers get by with passy C grades, but they can still go into the field. Probably the biggest incentive is that they get summers off.
Well written and acted - thank you.
Sad 😢 often it’s easier for people to drug someone than really help them, great film ❤
How is it possible that the teachers didn't know about Will's father drowning? This rests verosimilitude to the story, especially afther the coach said Will had PTSD. In fact, why Will's teacher didn't ask his mother about it? It is a pity that such grear movie has what I see as a narrative mistake.
My thoughts exactly ...i hate when film-makers take an important factual topic and mess it up with terrible story-telling.
Yeah it's a clunky way to make the old white lady a villain. I imagine there are plenty of teachers at that age who've just stopped caring enough to ask though. "ADHD" will get him out of her class. Or at least that's how her character plays at the END, yet through the rest of the fi;m she seems like a perfectly good and concerned teacher. Just poor character writing I think.
What did I learn?
That there is no person with more wisdom on psychological conditions, no medical authority higher than a grade school spelling teacher.
I'm sure she will eventually lead a fruitful career in the department of Veteran's Affairs, diagnosing veterans who survived explosions with ADHD
Holy fricken moly. That hit so hard. That could be my kid.
Let me guess.
Her first name is Karen...Isn't it? 😏
Usually, an IEP is given after extensive testing. It's not like there's only one evaluation by a teacher, and then BOOM, the IEP is given. No, there are several people (including a school psychologist who monitors the kid during school and one-on-one) who determine the problem. My kid has ADHD, and I saw this firsthand.
Excellent, it reminds me of me, yet in VERY DIFFERENT WAYS! Thank You for this HARD topic!
Well done. As an African American teacher and mother, unfortunately I’ve seen it a lot.
Wow, fantastic story. One of those films you will remember.
Exceptional short..the problem of misdiagnosis and labeling is a major issue in education. This short really does a good job highlighting this problem.
However, the teacher’s comment that he should take an “ I. E.P. Test “ is erroneous. An individualized educational plan(IEP) is what is developed after a battery of tests are administered. The battery of tests varies from school district to school district.
Think I had/have PTSD, from my bully sister....but that lady teacher needs to listen better!!
I'll never understand parents and teachers who don't think it's ok for a kid to whoop a bully's ass my parents were strict when I was in school but that was the only time I got away with being suspended is if I had to fight my parents would be at the school ready to throw down with the bully's parents and any factory who got in the way and I'm the same way with my 3 daughters now ❤🔥💯
Faculty*** not factory LMFAO
Such a moving & informative film.
Congratulations & Much success 🌟
Was the teacher actually "bullying" him?
No, LOL. It is "harassment" to try to get someone misdiagnosed though.
So good and such a good message!
This was so good. 🇬🇧
Why does it have to be Texas lol😂
😂😂
So the one kid can say "y'all" the one time.
Me in Texas finding this funny😅
In many of the film festival panels, the DIrector Laurie Gardiner shares that the story is loosely based on her personal story. She had a traumatic experience when she was in the 2nd grade and because of the affect of that situation on her, she was placed in remedial education and basically forgotten there until she was in the 10th grade. She grew up in Texas and I don't want to misquote, but I believe she shared that Texas has a high rate of misdiagnosis.
Awesome.
I blame the mother and the teacher for not listening to the coach and the coach shouldn't have to say it the mother should have said something. It seems like the mom didn't care because she blamed him.
When I loss my mother and my little sister yes I was dying on the inside and the outside but i made sure my kids was good and then I just cry by myself or we all just cried together
This is somekind of awareness film? Give me a break. This is a really good movie.
Why can't it be both?
The mother's grieving, okay, but she needs to take care of her son first, he's the most vulnerable and at risk not her.
Also, moving to another country thinking that it would just make the tragedy disappear was a ridiculous move, because it added stress to grieve for the poor boy. All wrong.
When tragedy strikes in a family, all people involved need time to grieve without being harsh to each other, and most of all they need patience, love and support. This boy was thrown into a foreign school where he felt isolated and lonely, with a mother who didn't support him.
And the female teacher, well she's a huge as****e.
Please folks don't do this to your kids, you're destroying their future.
whats this kids name & why isnt it listed in credits?
Is it about bullying, ADHD, PTSD, bad teachers, bad parenting, grief? A confusing narrative!
It's all of the above. It's a think piece. It's a PSA. It's art.
@@RubeeRoja Whats a PSA? and why is it art?

The makers of this film made it clear that their purpose was to raise awareness of the challenges facing children with PTSD and, in that regard, I think “Remedial” does a good job educating the public about this important issue. This is more of a public service film than an art film and evaluating all genres using the same criteria would not be fair. There are, however, some universal elements of filmmaking that can be assessed consistently across genres. In my opinion, the acting in “Remedial” is, for the most part, quite convincing. The directing, however, could have helped in speeding up the tempo a bit (especially in the first half) as the plot was somewhat slow to fully unfold. The cinematography also shows some room for improvement; for example, placing a subject in the center of the frame is not inherently a mistake, but it's a compositional choice that should be made with careful consideration of the storytelling goals of the scene.
I was impressed with the relationship between the kid and his father and it seems to me that that alone could become an interesting short film. The part where he overcomes his swimming inability by going after the music box, is quite powerful. The box, however, would have had to fall in a river or in the ocean where it could be lost for ever… not in a swimming pool.

The mom being a selfish witch is not helping him either, see that a lot as well and it's only going to get worse as time passes because the kids today are taught from the moment they can hold a phone and log into fakebook, twatter, tictard that THEY are the most important thing in the world, and it sticks.
Just give the kid a pill and call it dealt with because mommy needs the attention HERSELF!!
