  • A reclusive housekeeper meets a chatty fisherman.
MINNOWS is used with permission from James Mills. Learn more at millsmovies.com.
Meredith is a painfully shy, reclusive housekeeper, who doesn't have much of a life outside of her job or her home. She finds it hard to speak to others, feeling often self-conscious and awkward.
But one day after her bike is stolen, she meets Angelo, an affable, chatty fisherman who has emigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines. Angelo can talk enough for the both of them and even though they seem to have disparate temperaments, they forge an unlikely bond based on their common loneliness and a shared love of the ocean. He begins to pull Meredith out of her shell, but just as she begins to entertain more hopes and dreams for herself, she finds herself facing a challenge to those newly awakened emotions.
Directed and written by James Mills, this immersive, thoughtful short drama follows the standard pattern of a romantic comedy story, starting with a "meet-cute," progressing to greater levels of familiarity and then hitting a snag. But the film has a very particular take on the genre, going for an unvarnished but no less lovely view of humanity that's expansive, generous-minded and challenges the idea of who deserves to be at the center of love stories and how we should tell them.
The film is on the longer side of a short, using its time to delve deep into its central characters. In a conventional Hollywood rom-com, Meredith would be a character that exists on the margins of a scene, perhaps supporting as the main characters drive the action with quippy dialogue and bold emotion. Here, she is reserved and awkward, clearly not comfortable in the world and in her skin, and just as unseen by others.
Captured in writing that has an ear for how everyday people talk and think and camerawork that emphasizes how the lovely and ordinary can co-exist in everyday life, Meredith meets Angelo, who appreciates Meredith's company. Actor Marc Fajardo plays Angelo with compelling warmth, acceptance and humor, and the character's extraverted nature nudges Meredith out of her shell more.
Watching her slowly emerge with Angelo's attention is a wonderful, rich transformation, played beautifully by actor Artemis Bell with vulnerable tenderness and understatement. The film requires patience and attention as these lives unfold, but we soon begin to feel as if we know them, and when the pair hit an obstacle to a promising relationship, it's devastating to both us and Meredith. But Meredith proves she is more resilient than she thinks, with a deep well of devotion and love that opens up the world to her, even when she seems at her lowest.
In many ways, MINNOWS is a tribute to the ordinary, hard-working everyman and everywoman, of normal people just trying to get through life and find some connection amid a world that can seem indifferent. Its investment in telling Meredith's story with such heart, depth and generosity is a profound statement, affirming that one doesn't have to be perfect, beautiful, witty or otherwise optimized as a human being to feel and be worthy of love, care and attention. As it wends into its final section, we see that it is not finding someone or winning their love that transforms us, but the action of loving itself, in its purest form, that has its magic and alchemy.

This challenged me. Would I have befriended Merideth? The answer is probably not. I would be kind to her, but I don't think I would have gone out of my way to be her friend, and she so badly needs a friend. Made me rethink who I am spending my time and energy on.

I think the greatest part of this is that in the beginning Angelo taught meredith how to open up and connect with people and brings her out of her shell. While he may not ever be the same now, Meredith can now be what Angelo was for her in the first place. And she could have never done that without him

@saramatthews7159 A small idea that can help.
Give smiles and random compliments. As you pass a person alone, say, "I love your shoes." or "that's a great coat."
What does that give you? A surprised look from them. Pleasure on their face. They smile and say thank you. Smile and, while still walking, say "You're welcome." or, my preference is to say, "You have a great day." and just keep walking.
Don't trap yourself by giving a compliment to someone in an elevator... or another person sitting in a waiting room. Then you're in the middle of a conversation that makes you wish you'd never spoken. And one can't do that if its a group of people walking past, that's out of our comfort range. (Yes, I'm talking about me and you!)
By doing it as you pass someone, there is no risk to you. You aren't doing it to get into a conversation or wanting anything in return. Its just a little compliment to a stranger or even a co-worker. Just as you need to be noticed, so do others. But by noticing them.... you've changed their day, and that changes your day -- you will feel this slow rush of pleasure that you caused someone to smile. They smiled at what you said. You are no longer invisible.
The expectation of being invisible makes you invisible.
If you try to do the above just occasionaly.... it changes something inside you. You see yourself as a person who has made someone smile.
Invisibilty is you hiding from others.
This is a safe way to test waters.... and slowly, you feel better about you. You feel safer in small interactions and that increases how you like you. It truly does help you to interact with others in other ways in the future if and when you want to.

Kind of heartbreaking but also weirdly uplifting. It's so strange to think of people who enter our lives for a moment in time yet leave such an impact. The fact that she ended up the chatty one in the end teaching him how to fish was just beautiful yet sad. Even though she may not get the relationship that she was looking for, she got something great instead. She got the spark back in her life, she gained confidence and felt the love and warmth of a friendship. So throught provoking. I'm also trying to figure out what the waves signify. Something to do with the waves and how its linked to life, i just cant quite articulate it.

when Angelo caught the two minnows in the bucket, he said that the ocean bought them together(the minnows). Angelo them went on to say that the ocean would soon take them away. The ocean and its fish brought Meredith and Angelo together initially. The ocean also took Angelo away when he had his accident on the ship. This is the best one I've seen in quite a while. There's a kind of karmic (?) thing in the way the roles get reversed, and Meredith gets a chance to repay Angelo's kindness, but with the wrinkle that he's oblivious to his own memory of her, which actually allows her to feel comfortable taking the risks posed by coming out of herself. The dialog is kinda sparse, but it delivers, saying everything it needs to say without being too obvious or too obscure.
This thing is just really good all the way around.

Wow, what ya'll did in just 37 mins. is astounding! It was really good, and I kept needing it to go on and on. It did, until the right ending. They did it all in an amount of time for her to go from one fish in the sea, to a few minnows in the pond, which are like family and strong. They just reminded me of minnows that needed reunited and to be in each other's lives. :)

What I’ve observed to be true much more than we like to admit is that the world is full of chatty people but very few brave hearts like Meredith. He said hi, but then she said hi back and that’s doesn’t happen very often.

Really well made short ... great story-telling. I thought Meredith was played incredibly well by Artemis Bell.

I know what it’s like to not be liked by a parent. It’s very hard to cope with - there isn’t a guide or anything you can read to help. The impact, unfortunately, is life lasting.

Beautiful film. In my mind she takes him home because he has nowhere to live anymore and no job. She teaches him English and how to fish again and gives him the same hand up that he gave her. And they’re friends for life. And one day she tells him how they first became friends before the accident.

I loved this. I don't think I've ever felt so invested in the characters in a short film before. I found myself shouting "Wake up Angelo!" at the screen. The writing was great, the acting was fantastic, everything: the script, camera, editing, directing. This was just perfect in every way.
