    I'm one of your big fans, Amber! Ultimately, we'll have a big staff. Right now, I totally need paid help. I love the tip to have enough reserve to run the operations for several months. I did learn we need one budget for building (the children's museum) and a budget for operations. Building in a cushion is so important!
    Thanks!!!

    Hi dear, do we need an office for our organization at the beginning?? And what is the requirement of the office?

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 роки тому

      Hello! No, it is not required to have an office. Only get an office if you genuinely need it to manage a team effectively. Many organizations are able to operate without an office.

    Hi, I just came across your channel. How do you support yourself while running a nonprofit? Are you allowed to be a paid staff member yourself? Thanks for your time!

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, nonprofits can have paid staff (but they can't hire themselves - the voting board has to hire them.). This video talks all about it! You CAN get paid for Nonprofit work, but there’s a catch - ua-cam.com/video/EwBGpgVOFPQ/v-deo.html

    What is a good starting pay for the first staff member?

      Depends on a lot of factors - role, geography, budget, etc.! Check out my videos on nonprofit salaries for sure. :)

    What are the key positions/roles you have to have when starting you are starting a nonprofit besides the Executive Director??

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  2 роки тому

      That depends a bit on your mission and budget, but if it were me and there were sufficient resources to do so, I'd start with the Executive Director, a Director of Development (fundraising), a Director of Programs, and a Director of Operations and Finance (accounting, behind the scenes stuff, HR, etc.). That way you get your major bases covered by skilled professionals and can focus on growth early on.

      @@AmberMelanieSmith What if you don't have sufficient funds or resources??? I am starting a grassroots nature education nonprofit in an underserved community. And for now, I have no money to hire skilled people, but I still need help to achieve my vision and mission. I am the ED, The Program Manager, The Director of Development, The Volunteer Coordinator, etc. And it's starting to be too much for one person. What could be your advice, Amber?

    • @AmberMelanieSmith
      @AmberMelanieSmith  Рік тому

      Most nonprofits don't start with a lot of money. You'll need to develop a fundraising plan to raise the money you need to do hiring if you need paid staff.

      I would say start by putting together a 1-page letter of request writing out exactly what kinds of donations you are looking for, and why they are needed - then start reaching out to businesses that offer those types of materials and see what feedback you get!
