Really miss tomorrows world. It seems dated now but I never felt patronised by the presenters in the way you do when watching things like Click. I started work on the tunnel just a few weeks after this was filmed. One of the best jobs I have had. A brilliant achievement that we should be proud of. Sadly Brits seem to prefer whinging and whining about cost and foreigners, despite the fact the Brits use it more than anyone else and it has over time made money.
I'm neither British or French, but you can't help but feel a tremendous sense of national pride for both of those countries watching this, even after all these years.
What a fantastic project its mind blowing what humans can achieve 😀 Also I loved the nostalgia from watching this amazing programme. I used to love Tomorrow's World ☺
those "piston vents" proved to be problematic during the channel tunnel fire in 1996 because they allowed toxic smoke from the burning train to end up in the other tunnel. They changed the procedures for freight trains going through the tunnel because of that fire. Also because of that fire, regulation for the Great Belt tunnel in Denmark which opened for trains in 1997 was made so freight trains are not allowed in the tunnels at the same time as passenger trains. This was carried over to the Øresund connection when it opened in 2000, which has the additional rule that freight trains are not allowed through the tunnel and station at Kastrup/Copenhagen Airport, so there's an extra track above ground that takes freight trains around the airport
So there were four or five abortive attempts to construct the Channel Tunnel...And then after all that, they *finally* worked out how to do it... /* Turns gaze toward Brexit, realises it's completely doomed this time around, and unleashes as evil laugh... ;-) */
the innuendos in this is a gift!

Well the Tunnel joined us together in 1994 when it opened but now we're about to be divorced.
This was before half of England became non--integrating Muslims.
@@braed6202 all imported from former British Colony - nada to do with EU
@@MetroVick yeah you're not wrong but the EU and it's lefties support immigrant en mass.
@@braed6202 Until they found out what we think of them, now they've all gone back. Luckily non-EU immigration will pick up the slack.
Good quality recording that didn't seem to degenerate over the years now that quality is reproduced digitally and can be watched anytime forever .

This is when the BBC made real TV shows. Great theme music, too.
Those good old days before CGI.

A prime timeinformative programme covering several aspects in an intelligent way. Why does there not seem to be much of that today?
A few years later I travelled in the channel tunnel. It was great!!
Quite a stunning feat of human engineering.
Yes but is a 120 year life span enough?
In days when tape players were still in cars, they did THIS !! Absolutely amazing..makes you proud to be British 🇬🇧
I'm still waiting for the direct train from Glasgow to Vienna
I'm still waiting for a train from Johnstone to Bishopbriggs.
Watched this on zbc back in the 80's and 90's..
Thanks for posting this full episode, it's a real blast from the past, I was a fan of this show as a child.
+Wayne Herby If you were a child, did you understand what they were talking about? That's what the purpose of watching a programme is
I watched it as a child as well, don't underestimate children lol If there's one thing they learn quickly it's technology.
did you get your *jim will fix it* badge
It'll probably get bricked up the way things are going :-(
A tunnel under the sea?
Nah, this will never work!
28 years later & they're still using the same rolling stock!
Very good to hear that there was some cooperation with French Antenne 2 on that report
why
Tunneling under the sea. I am flabbergasted.

These miners earnt some proper proper money. 1300 a week in the late 80s?!
Kate laughs about all the talk about shafts

Anyone else thinking what if Alan Partridge had taken part in this ??
Good until the embarrassing bit with the steering wheel. Then I was done
They thought it was going to be so great.. modern generation goes it's a tunnel, SO? to France. SO?..under the sea..SO?..?🙂
I know what you mean :(
They jumped forward to 1993 but failed to predict the Insectoid invasion of '92.
Projects like this just help us consume our environment faster
better for the earth than flying
Nonsense.
Sven could you be anymore boring? (no pun intended)
rabies lol

2019! and we want to brick the bloody thing up!! BREXIT!!
And 30 years on it runs like a bag of shite
Used it recently and works just fine
It should never have been built!
Well, not to perfideous France anyway.
Too late job done
