  • blog.BavAuto.com -- Failure of the BMW Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system is a common problem that can lead to catastrophic engine failure. In this two-part series, Bavarian Otto shows you how to do it yourself on a V8 engine and save hundreds of dollars over what a dealer would charge. Everything you need for the job is available in our online store at www.bavauto.com/ (For our video showing how to do this on a BMW 6-cylinder engine, go to blog.BavAuto.com/go/PCV.)

    I have performed this job many times. One clue that the diaphragm is ruptured is the engine will "moo like a cow" upon shut down. It is true the Dealer will tell you that you need to pull the manifold and also tell you that it is required because "there are new updated manifold gaskets to be installed," bull. Those torx machine screws that hold the valve to the back of the manifold are very tight and the recessed portion of the screw is not very deep,one slip and you damage the flanks on the screw and you may end up pulling the manifold. use a torx bit with the newest,sharpest "teeth" on it you can find.
    I was taught how to do this job at a Dealer that did not pull the manifold to make this repair. I moved to WI and was dispatched this job. They never said how I was to do the job but when I got it done so quick they asked "how did you do it". I told them I did not pull the manifold. They took some time off because of this (customer pay job). This is simply what happens when a shop gets a long term employee in a decision making position,an employee that did not have the needed hand dexterity to do the job so he lied to customers and management and said manifold gasket replacement was required.
    Some techs like to call this valve an "oil separator"for some reason. I always called i a "crankcase vent valve".

    I tried this on my 95, 740il. The screws were so tight, that of course they striped. Called the dealer, and they wanted, $875 for the repair, so I did it myself. When I actually took the manifold off, the screws were so tight, that 2 of them wouldn't come off with vise grips. I had to use a grinder and cut the piece off. It took a whole afternoon just to put the part on the manifold. Just wanted to share this. In some cases it might be easy, but if your not lucky, you'll have a bad day.

    great video. I took the oil fill cap off and the motor ran like a champ. I knew it was the osv valve. I was ready to scrap the car. LOL. Hey, 23 years it lasted. Not bad. Great video. yes, the bottom 2 torx screws are a pita.

    Would the pcv prevent car from starting after long term parking of a year or maybe a dirty maf?

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  11 років тому

    The PCV system should not cause a not-start, with the following notes: If there is a major vacuum leak due to one of the PCV hoses being cracked and open, this could cause difficult starting. If the PCV oil separator is clogged, this can cause major amounts of oil to be sucked into the intake and the cylinders, causing a hydraulic lock. In this case the engine would not crank (or turn over).

    You do not have to take off the whole valve, i just reach back with a straight screw driver and pop off the round cover that holds the rubber diaphragm , its a 5 min job.

    I have 1995 BMW 740il i completed this with that exact PCV. when i pulled the old one off and it looked the same except it doesn't have the middle black nipple. instead the old one is smooth. when i put the new one on and put everything back i heard loud hissing and then the car stalls. could that center nipple be the reason for the hissing?

  • @bavarianautosport

    All parts needed to do the repair, are in the kit. You may, however, wish to order the short vent hose (# 11 61 1 440 126) as this may be brittle and crack or rip while being removed. This applies to the V8 M62 engines from 99-on (540i, 740i/iL, X5 4.4 & 4.6is through 03).

  • @trevonhill8552

    I replaced one before and is there a recommended interval time frame to change them? I did it slightly different, I took just the center piece off and replace it with the new one without having to take all that other stuff apart. After seeing your video I think it be wise after a few times to replace the entire part due to the gasket on the back of the manifold possibly being crystalized.

    Could the cyclonic oil separator valve behind the timing cover also cause oil in the throttle? I am a little confused on how the system works... I have oil in the throttle body and I took off the osv like in this video and inspected the diaphram put my diaphragm wasn't that bad, a little dry and bumpy (definitely dirty and old) but no cuts. What else could cause oil in the throttle and manifold? I will replace the pcv anyway since it is off already

    Yes, the check valve assembly certainly could be at fault. We would also check the condition of the spark plugs if it has been using the oil for a while. Additionally, you should clean the MAF with our Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner. You can see it at bavauto.com ... part number 05110

    Great video, thank you.I did as you said with the gasket replacement but the service engine light is still coming on.Quick question, the tube you refer to inside the manifold, I didn't feel one after carefully taking off the plate.All I felt was a hole where the nipple, presumably, butted up against. Am I supposed to be able to actually feel this tube? If so, why can't I...could it be disconnected inside the manifold? The BMW dealer said the smoke (test) was pouring out through the plate...?

  • @gmakutube

    I think that the bolts are actually RIBE head bolts. The Torx T-30 works but is always in danger of stripping the head. A ribe head socket will work much better and have less risk or stripping the bolts. These are the only ribe head bolts that I know of on the M62 or M62TU engine, and I think that they are a legacy of the original supplier of the intake manifold back cover.

    • @gmakutube

      I would just add that many replace the ribe head bolts with hex head bolts of the same size for future. They are M6 x 25 size.

    I have a 97 e38 and I just changed the intake gasket at the recommendation of a failed emissions inspection. The problem still exists and I'm wondering how to test if the pcv system.I'm kicking myself for not changing it with the intake out of the car but can't cry over spilled milk.I am a very minor backyard mechanic.In fact I'm a disabled auto body man but still do my own repairs due to low funds.I hear a whistling when driving at times.I also notice a large white cloud coming from the exhaust at start up from time to time but not all the time.I have a check engine light on and have no scanner to check for error codes.It also has a ticking that I'm told is common for the e38's but unplugging the coil packs doesn't drastically change idle.The car has almost 200,000 on it.In your opinion is it worth changing the pcv system valve.I don't know how to check valve other than to replace it and see if problem subsides

    In order to help you out, we really need more detailed descriptions of all of the symptoms and problems ... and exactly how and when they are happening. Additionally, have you done any work or diagnostics toward solving this issue? Have you used a tool to check for any stored engine fault codes? For further assistance, please email to us at info@bavauto.com .

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  11 років тому

    Yes, the tube can indeed become disconnected from the forward manifold cover (throttle body mount plate). If you remove the front cover and throttle body, you can check this .... and it's much easier to do. You will need a new gasket for the cover and for the throttle body. We have these in-stock at bavauto.com or call at 800-535-2002.

      The N62 engine in your 545i is totally different from the M62 shown here. On the N62, first try replacing the crankcase ventilation valves, on the valve covers. If this has no effect, you may have faulty valve guide seals ... which is common on the N62 engines.

    • @bavarianautosport

      Many people are able to remove a stripped bolt using a small pair of needle-nose vise-grip pliers. A "last resort" option is to break apart the cover to gain more access to the bolt.

      I carefully cut mine off with a reciprocating saw, I separated the ccv from the throttle body with a small flat head I had two torx bolts left ,was able break the plastic to expose the bolts and use a miniature grip pliers to unscrew the bolts.

  • @m5p944
    @m5p944 4 роки тому +2

    1 out of 10 that you can remove it this way.
    Almost impossible in high mileage vehicles,
    Bolts are usually torqued to oblivion.
    The chance you going to strip at least one of them is almost certain.
    I strongly recommend to remove intake.
    Might be even faster.
    I’ve done over 300 of these engine since my heydays in Bmw Autec in Prague so take this advice.

    • @bavarianautosport
      @bavarianautosport  10 років тому

      We have never had to break one apart. We would suggest pry tools and pliers. Just be careful not to damage the intake manifold itself.

    • @Rancher49
      @Rancher49 10 років тому

      what we did was; use a sawzall, very carefully, with a long blade. Started at the top right standing working from the left side, and just trimmed away all the plastic above the bottom screws. then the big vice grips worked easily and quickly. Like firing a weapon, be sure of what is behind, and don't hit that.

      Yes, you can use this video for the 99 540i. Your symptoms certainly could be due to a faulty PCV check valve assembly. The smoke may be from an oil leak at one of the valve covers., unless the check valve cover is cracked.

      well, it's hard to really say what's going on, without having the car here. You need to locate the source of the smoking. Is it oil running onto the hot exhaust? If so, exactly where is it originating? Once we know just where the smoking is starting, we can address what to do. There isn't much that we can think of in performing the PCV replacement that would be a potential problem to cause the smoking.

    A truly miserable job. First of all you are working blindly. The worst part is that the TORX screws were overtightened from the factory. They will strip, at least half of them will. The other problem is getting your hand back there. I quit. I will get it towed to my INDY. I HATE TORX BOLTS AND E BOLTS. I just recently did the driveshaft bearing, flex disc, trans mount, radiator and trans service. If I didn't put all that work and money into the car I would have junked it. 1997 E 38 with 225000 miles. I recommend replacing the torx bolts with hex bolts and putting a little MMO on the threads.

    I tried and the tube came out, do I really have to take the cover out to put the tube back?
