I like how you pruned the height down first, but I think that aftewards you should also check for crossing branches, and use those hand pruners to make sure you've cut to an outward facing bud.
I wasn't able to get to the pruning in February but I did it last weekend. I hope I didn't make a mistake in doing that. I'm in Houston. We were having a major freeze at the time I normally prune, and then have had no water for weeks until last Friday.
When you cut the stems way back, you said about a foot from the ground, does it matter where you cut them? Will I ruin the plant if I don’t cut it at a bud? I know this is an older video, but if anyone can answer this please help me out.
MsLadyLilian I’m not sure because I really only research Georgia pruning schedules and only for plants in my landscape. Most roses can be pruned without harm though. The shrub style roses are very hardy.
@@TightWadDIY Thank you for your response and detailed answer! I am highly impressed!! Hard to find a channel that that will respond to subs questions. Again thank you for the k knowledge!! You have a great day!!
C Bomparola I like to prune mine in the middle of winter or later, but at least a month before warmer temperatures. I don’t know NY weather cycles so I hope this helps.
I’ve got a question...should you also cut 2 or 3 of the biggest “stalks” back to the ground so they don’t get too ‘Woody’? The bigger stalks, even on other bushes and shrubs, seem to carry less and less leaves, buds, etc. just really curious. TIA
Would be nice if one of these videod would zoom in so we can actually see what your doing... And I'm confused as hell... Wats the point of trimming the branches back to the buds first and then hacking the entire branch off?!?
Dirt Nassty This video is meant for winter pruning only when the roses are dormant. I have a different video showing how to prune during the growing season called “dead heading”.
Shana Frye Using a higher rate of nitrogen and lower amounts of phosphorus and potassium are best. Examples of fertilizers to use are 27-3-3 or 25-5-5. Instead of using the one cup rate, use only about 1/8 to 1/4 cup per plant. (From an article by Dennis Patton)

They are pretty resilient.
Thank you...this was very helpful!

do i need remove small attached to the major cane grows? Most I have looking caneslooks as like a fork ( 2 or three stems short on one big stem)
MsLadyLilian It sounds like you have a different variety of rose than I have.
I live in Akron ohio when’s a good time to cut back my knock out roses?
End of Jan early Feb is what I read for zone 6 and you're not far from me in PA.
I'm in warner robins...so would u wait till late January ,February to prune, or would I be ok to prune now? I have 3 around my mailbox
cmp0714 I suggest waiting until the next cold snap. It has been unusually warm and new growth may appear if you prune right now.
Is it ok to cut them back in the fall?
You can. I suggest waiting for the first frost so no new growth appears.

could you use an electric trimmer to do the job you've done here?
Sharon You could, its just not ideal.
Can you tell me when is is best time to prune my knockout roses for the winter in NY ?

Karen Quinn You can prune any of them that start to get out of hand.
Why don't you consider moving the other two in the same line as the one in front?
Leeza Lee Clusters of an odd number of plants is popular in landscape design. I am not a fan of rows unless they are against a wall.
I'm about to use this method

Dirt Nassty In winter you are simply shaping the plant so there is really no need to zoom in.
I'm in Sav Ga. My knock out roses are old and leggy. I just cut them way back. Is there any feed or fertilizer I can give them to perk them up?

jan / feb ? LOL tee shirt .....lol must live in Alabama !
JAG Haha. I am in Georgia. We occasionally get some warmer days in Winter.
I hope I didn't kill my Knockouts--I gave them a heavy pruning! South Georgia is where I live.
Terry James They should be fine.
Hope so, I just cut mine back in October in Louisiana - zone 9. 🤔☦️
