I take all my roses back to about 18 inches each year and down to the three to six best stems.

The first year or so I did this, I was completely paranoid and thought I was going to kill the plants. Knockouts and Double Knockouts? No worries. I'm pretty sure you could take these things down to the soil line and they will still grow back. They're incredible growers...
I generally take mine down to about 2' in late Feb / early March. It's not uncommon for them to get 6' tall by the end of the Summer / early Fall. They grow like Audrey from 'Little Shop of Horrors'...

Rose rosette is the big thing we want to avoid. It's spread by not spraying of pruners before each plant. 70 % alcohol saturation. Dry completely.

Please be careful of the thorns
You can get a bad infection like I did. Some how the little thorns get under skin and you don't realize it until later. Protect your face..just be careful...these beautiful rose bushes can and will "bite"
