Tub won’t drain. Tub lever broken. Easy DIY Fix.

  • I love sharing money saving DIY fixes and projects. If your tub won’t drain during use first make sure it’s not clogged. My lever wouldn’t stay in a down position without holding it down in order for it to drain. You should be able to find a repair/replacement kit at any hardware store for your tub lever.
    I am not a professional everything I do on here is a first time attempt. I try to show easy ways to complete DIY home improvements and typically without buying extra tools you may not ever use again.

    Thank you! My tub was draining super slow. I watched your vid and was able to take the thing apart by myself and (!) I figured out that the line leading to the weight was too low. I twisted it a bit higher and now the tub drains perfectly fast! Plus it still holds water. I’m so thankful to you!

    I’d just like to add info I learned from a This Old House video. The staining on the “bell” end is because it was sitting too low in the wall and sitting in water. When you use the lever to drain the tub, it wasn’t high enough to allow draining. Adjusting the height can fix the problem.

    It took me a few hot minutes to get this completed but most of it was digging out the long part out of the hole because the old one came apart when I was pulling it out. I was also a dumb dumb and put the cover on upside down and it took me a bit to figure out what a I did. I enjoyed your video, you explained it well.

    Looks like exactly what I need to have to fix my problem and I already have the screws out and cover plate out but I can’t see your video. It is too small and in a small square window only…I tried to enlarge it and it won’t let me so I just thought I’d give you that update 🙂 I appreciate what you have done here but I really wish I could see it better. Thank you so much for taking the time to do it and maybe you can enlarge it somehow for others to benefit more …By the way that crazy icon picture to the left is NOT ME… my grandson set that up lol I don’t know how to get rid of it. Lol lol

      I know. After I took all the clips and uploaded this is what I had. None of my other videos are like this. It’s been awhile since I posted this but I don’t remember it being so small while creating so I’m not sure what happened during editing. I just pulled the cover off and it should pull a long piece with weight attached. From there you should be able to see how to remove and attach the new parts. Yes, it’s still up close or slightly cutoff but you should be able to see necessary steps hopefully 🤞🏽

    My lever works, my problem is the screws are no longer holding the cover onto my tub. The screws are just screwing right through all of the sudden and it falls off and hangs into the tub. I have no idea why or how to fix it.

    • @myieasdiy
      @myieasdiy  Рік тому

      I would just attempt troubleshooting. Have you tried new screws? If new screws are still not working I would try replacing the unit and also check holes where lever assembly attaches with screws to see if the part is stripped.

    • @797depo
      @797depo Рік тому +3

      Idk if this will help but the plunger is likely copper or another non ferris metal (so it doesn't rust)
      If thats the case a magnet on a string won't work.
      If there are any metal pieces it may still pick it up.
      Try a borroscope with a hook on it to hook the device (this will take alot of practice and patience) they sell cheap ones that you could use. Wouldn't use those for buisness but for diy light use they should survive.
      Most are "water proof" but don't trust that statement.
      It's how I ended up finding a major leak behind my wall for the shower.

    Omg i have a serious problem in this old house. The weight part wasent there when i took it apart. And i also tried a wire into the drain in the bathtub and the wire dosent go any further it feels like a metal there.

    • @myieasdiy
      @myieasdiy  2 роки тому +2

      You can purchase the weight separately. Now the hole where the lever sits should go straight into a waste pipe but I’m no plumbing expert but generally it should. I’m not sure how your pipes are configured but the one that the water drains into would hit metal because it runs horizontal.

    • @AgustinaQuinteroFelix

      @@myieasdiy Thank you. It goes straight. But them at the bottom is not straight is like a t shape. And i already bought a trip lever. But the problem is im not able to fish out the one that it broke and is stock somewhere in the pipes.

    • @myieasdiy

      I’m no professional by any means. From what I’ve read online there is a grabber tool however most say they were unsuccessful with it. A few people said a bent coat hanger worked after a few tries otherwise this might require a plumber or removing the drain if you’re comfortable doing so.

    • @myieasdiy
      @myieasdiy  Рік тому +2

      I think it should be just the same to replace. Once you remove the screws and faceplate check to see if everything else is still attached. Worst case if the back piece the lever was attached to is gone and the arm that holds the weight is no longer attached you might try fishing out with a wire hanger.

      If it looks like the same type of lever style I’m not certain but could be rust or calcium build up. I would suggest searching for stuck drain lever or stopper videos. If it’s a different style I honestly don’t know. This was a first time for me doing this. Sorry I couldn’t give you a fix for this but I looked it up and saw this issue so I’m sure you can find a good one on UA-cam that will help.
