  • @jackkraken3888
    @jackkraken3888 5 років тому +1

    The venerable barcode is not going anywhere, its still very useful in the retail space and is basically just a quick way to read a serial number , which itself is often written at the bottom of the barcode just in case the barcode is damaged or unreadable. Also the barcode rarely stores anything more than just a serial number, the rest is stored on a database on a computer. While QR codes are great, they still need more high tech devices, barcode scanners are often cheaper and ubiquitous and very easy to use. Also barcode scanners are moving away from lasers for reading as the lasers could be harmful if pointed at the eyes. Newer models use LEDs and are still pretty accurate.

    While UPC is probably the dominant barcode type in the US and Canada, EAN is by far the most common in Europe, with the most common one of those being EAN-13.
    Also, QR code scanning has become insanely fast, without using the cloud. In my group at university we are working with qr and bar code scanning libraries that don't connect to the cloud, so all the processing is done on the phone. The two limiting factors for all the phones we have tested are camera launch speed and autofocus speed, since the processing itself is instant.

    • @daemiax
      @daemiax 8 років тому

      +Christoffer Nørskov Datamatrix is getting more common , also I think code 128 is as common as EAN-13... and thankfully none of that crappy interleaved 2of5

    • @chris195868
      @chris195868 8 років тому

      Daemi Ax I have seen datamatrix a couple of places, but often for more specialty purposes, would say QR is still more common for the consumer to see. Don't think i have seen code 128 (or recognized it) anywhere. At least products in the store still use EAN 13 here.
