- During some coding for a uni assignment, I became interested in how QR codes are generated, and thought it would be an interesting topic for a video. The concepts that QR codes build on go way beyond the level covered in this video, but hopefully this gives a good introduction for those who are just curious.
Most of the "How QR codes work" videos are not actually how they work, but how they are used.

There are countless videos claiming to do it, but this is the only vid that claims to explain how QR codes work, that actually does explain how they work.

Finally, some clarity on the original 21x21 QR code and how data is stored without having to go thru the dark archives (THE DARKIVES? 😂) of the internet. I have found the DENSO white paper which is a nice read at 12 pages that expands on codes that were developed.

I am a 13 year old who has to program a gui program in C that can create an QR code of 3 different standards. This was so helpful because I was stressing about this project so much.

Very well done! Thank you! My question is: how does the information stored in the code remain editable? Is that information (link, contact info, etc.) actually stored on and referenced through a server? Or does the pattern just by itself generate the information through the camera reader software? If so, how then does the information remain editable? For example, even with free QR generators, I can simply load up the image to change the linked info, but the image pattern does not change. So the QR on all my printed business cards still works but displays updated info. Ok, thank you again. Appreciated your thoughtful visual approach.
There's multiple ways it can be done. The QR code is just the data displayed in a visual way, so the raw data of the card (name and contact details and such) could be stored but then changes to them would change the QR code itself. It would most likely be the case that the system you use for your business card stores the contact details on their server, and the QR code contains the link to wherever the data is stored. That way the link to the data is always the same even when the data itself changes.
@@JamesExplains how many variations are there on modern QR cards? is it approaching infinite? ive noticed this local government service generates a QR code for each person and contains their name among other information but every time you refresh, reprint, or log in to get the page the QR code is visibly different
this would mean there could be thousands of these QR codes for each person if everyone refreshed the page that many times further more none of this information is linked to servers as the scanners/codes work without an internet connection
how hard would it be to edit such QR codes, are there any software programs available to do such?

The theee masking bits doesn’t allign with the QR masking standard (example: 000 should be (i+j)%2=0, not (i*j)%2+(i*j)%3=0 (which incidently is 101)
