I live in the UK and played cricket as a kid. When I was an adult I was captain of a softball team. I became used to catching with the glove where I tended to move my hand towards the ball so that the glove closed around the ball. The next time I 'played catch' with a cricket ball I did the same motion with my bare hand. It really stung my hand causing me to drop the ball on top of my bare foot. The next day I had a large perfectly round bruise in the palm of my hand and another one on top of my foot. Catching a cricket ball with bare hands is a skill in itself and the guys who catch it at close-range to the batter have my utmost respect.
I have broken a few fingers playing cricket as a kid. I didn't get to play much in school as I was a girl, and it was classed as a boys sport at high school, but I still loved playing when I got the chance
So, baseball fans are all like, "Whoa, those cricket catches are insane!" 'Cause, you know, barehand grabs in their fave sport are like finding a needle in a haystack. Little do they know, the cricket ball is 10 times harder than the baseball they're used to.
All you need to do is think that it isn’t gonna hurt and that you’re going to catch it and then it will happen, it’s all in the mind
I play Hampshire county cricket in youth and I captain the team from silly mid off (really close to the batter, hence the name “silly” mid off)
As a kid I had a cricket ball seam imprint in my swollen ankle for a week after a bad delivery in the nets, it didn't bounce and skidded into my ankle.
Cricket is as much cerebral as physical. Without good strategy, a game can be lost, regardless of how physically skilled the opposition is. The best games are those with a blend of both.
2:56 if a fielder holds the ball while in contact with the ground outside the boundary then it is 6 runs. By tossing it back he prevented the 6.
Also the Cricket Balls are rock solid.
Cricket is the best sport on the planet for me. Ive played and watched it since i can remember. These days i watch my adult sons play at a beautiful ground or grounds with a beverage of choice and its heaven to me. The depth of the game is massive and as simple as baseball hit ball and run
Clearly had little to do with baseball. If you were as observant and knew as much about baseball you would be appreciating what baseball has been giving to cricket since at least 110 years ago. So many skills and techniques have been adopted into cricket. Learn about Victor Trumper and whan he advised to aspiring cricketers like your sons and his mate Monty (M.A.) Noble both of whom have SCG Stands named after them. I could go on and on but learn about both sports and not denigrate what is an equally great sport. Take your boys to an International cricket game about an hour early and observe how the players are warming up and how they are using baseball gloves.
2:45 Brett Lee is an Australian legend. He had declared his retirement and this was his last match.
the commentary made it more epic
Also probably the fastest consistent bowler of all time.
My favourite cricketer. Neil Harvey next.
G'day Mate! A thing to remember is that after football(soccer) cricket is the most watched/followed sport in the world! That thing with the fielders leaping and tossing the ball back in to the field of play... well if the ball clears the boundary it is auto]matically 6 runs and if the fielder catches it but lands outside of the boundary it is still 6 runs but if he can catch it in the air and toss the ball back infield then it is only the number of runs the batters can actually run uaually 2 or 3 only...Welcome to the cricket rabbit hole!!!!
Cricket came from the Sussex based sport of Stool Ball..and the two are quite similar...cricket is also one of the best sports to watch live (especially the 3rd day of an ashes test at Edgbasten) ... because basicly everyone gets drunk as a skunk and sings songs taking the mic out of the Auzzys.
What's an Auzzy?
The australians
@@warrenturner397 The child of an Aussie and an Ozzy? Just guessing...
I beg to differ about being the best sport to watch personally. Too slow for my liking
@@stanroach2842 Well it"s not that Pommy wicket keeper that has them.
You have to be within the field of play to catch someone out - if you catch it when you're over the boundary and your feet are touching the ground, it's six runs. Some of next year's T20 cricket world cup will be held in the US, so hopefully some of it will be televised where you are!
You’ll love cricket, you like fishing so must enjoy sitting around for hours waiting for something to happen
Takes people with patience and intelligence I guess.
Catching with hands is a skill you learn playing cricket as kids. The right techniques you can catch most balls without pain. Bowlers and silly mid are the ones most at risk
6:00 He thought the ball was going much higher so the safest option is to get under the ball. The ball however did not go as high as he expected.
Yep, got to do more Cricket!!!
4:35 an example of a VERY rare dismissal. The batsman 'on strike' was given 'out - obstructing the field' as he blocked the member of the other team getting to the ball.
The only thing Baseball and Cricket have in common is they were both invented in the UK! It got it's origins from a child game called rounders.
Sorta, Base-Ball and Rounders were just names for the same game, for instance, in Manchester it might get called Rounders, but up in Stockport they call it Base-Ball, or further up in York they might call it Bludger Ball etc etc.
Boys played cricket and girls played rounders
No sport is completely codified until the Laws or Rules are set in place. Time you learned where the Rules of Baseball came from and just how much of the sport resembles the sport you claim it came from
@@peterbrown1012 Where have you been since around 1930 when Women's Cricket was first played Internationally.
@@flamingfrancis bet you are a barrel if laughs at home
Yes, the ball is hard. Yes, it can be goign pretty quck. And yes, it can hurt taking a catch - sometimes even with the keeper's gloves on! I was shocked by how much I was not shocked by most of those clips! Cricket IS an interesting game in most/all of its forms, you just need to be aware you may be devoting quite a few hours of your life to seeing a game to the end.
yep ball is hard i took one in the skull woke up in hospital getting 6 stiches put in but worse i dropped the catch
And it killed an Aussie live on TV.@@philiprice7875
2:51 'his career is done'
That's because that was the last over before his announced retirement.
BBL or T20 are probably the best kinds of cricket for a newbie to watch.
Would help get the gist of the game better and because it’s so fast paced it’s more exciting.
Then they can get more into the nuances of the game.
Australia currently has their men’s BBL(Big Bash League) going on.
But test match is what makes them better then baseball,,because its exausting to play test,,bowlers ran fast and sling a shot for whole day,,batsman also can bat for whole day, fielder also can being aceibatic to catch for whole day despite not getting catches
Test cricket is more hit & miss than the shorter versions of the game but when you get a good one it more than makes up for all the boring ones.
That rope is called the boundary. When the ball gets hit and crosses the boundary on the ground it scores 4 runs for the batting team. When the ball is struck over the boundary in the air it scores 6 runs. That's why you see the fielders hitting the ball back inside the boundary. Your feet must land inside the boundary if you catch the ball.
I've seen fielders hit the ball back inside the boundary while off the ground, land outside the boundary and then step back inside and catch the ball before it hits the ground. Pretty cool to see. Love these vids 👍🏾
Rules of cricket: when you are in, you are out and when you are out, you are in. Good luck.
Except that cricket has NO Rules...they are LAWS.
Bruises, broken fingers pretty common in cricket the ball is just as hard if not harder than a baseball and its slightly heavier also
If there's something to aim for in 2024 then that has to be watching and understanding both rugby and cricket, both totally different games, but so so good.
The Headingley game England v Australia, where England came back from the dead (Botham, Willis, Dilley) is the game to watch.
I'd suggest starting with the "Cricket explained for Americans" video others have reacted to JT, it teaches the basics of cricket using a lot of baseball terminology to help explain what's going on and what the main differences are in more familiar terms.
I heard that the US has it's own fledgling cricket league now as well. I have no idea whereabouts they play though, there might even be a cricket team in your area!?
It's called Major League Cricket, a T20 franchise similar to India's IPL. The teams are Seattle Orcas, San Francisco Unicorns, LA Knight Riders, Texas Super Kings, MI New York and Washington(DC) Freedom. Some of those appear to be connected to IPL teams or share ownership, if the team names are anything to go by, eg. Chennai Super Kings, Kolkatta Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians(MI) are all IPL teams.
Bro you are not updated next world cup will be in USA
Test cricket is the best cricket in my opinion.
Broad came second in the SPOTY (Sports Personality of the Year) awards this year after he retired this year.
So he actually had a moral victory and came first?
Yes, 5-day test match cricket is the best for sure. It is the truest competition of bat vs ball.
@MrSimonHubbard to be fair I like the limited overs games too, test cricket is my favourite too (always will be), but I do enjoy the limited overs forms of cricket, I used to play (I was a leg spinner) and mainly played 40 or 50 over games for my club
@@mrmr5580 I can tolerate 50 overs cricket but I don't follow it.
@@79BlackRose fair play, it is a bit different to Test cricket, but I still enjoy it, more if its a big game
Going to watch a cricket match is a full day out. Plan accordingly.
You need coffee and Danish pastries for mid-morning, a selection of pies, ham, cold sausages or similar plus individual puddings for lunch, sandwiches and cakes for afternoon tea. These are planned breaks in the match when the players will also leave the field for their refreshments served in the pavilion. Don’t forget bags of sweets, biscuits, chocolate bars and crisps in case you need a snack.
You need waterproofs and an umbrella if the forecast is at all dodgy, and factor 50 sun cream for your nose if it’s good. Be prepared to have low-level bets with the people around you (probably total strangers) on things like what time the first wicket fell, what was the score when the first wicket fell, runs total at teatime, what the final runs score will be, and anything else you can think of.
Finally, if it’s a Test Match (an international fixture) a good little radio is a great extra so you can listen to the BBC commentary on the match you’re sat there watching. I LOVE CRICKET!!!❤
If the ball lands outside the boundary without touching the ground on the way, the batting team get 6 runs added to their score. If the ball is hit along the ground before crossing the boundary, the batting team get 4 runs added to their score.
The fielding team (when jumping and slapping it back in bounds) are trying to stop the ball hitting the ground outside of the boundary, then the batting team only get the number of runs (both batsman running end to end between the 2 sets of stumps) they were able to complete.
Each day has been such fun to watch thank you for ding all these make us feel good
JT did his best you gotta give him that
The day the crowd went wild and Ben Stokes and Jack leeches partnership both nail biting
Cricket is AWESOME! I love this game. Please watch more!
I believe at 3.35 is called a leg before whicket LBW where the batters leg is in the way of the Whicket/sticks preventing the ball from hitting them!
Correct
That's about half of it. Become an umpire and learn where the ball has to land on the pitch in respect of the line of the stumps and related to the height of the stumps.
Brett Lee was a phenom! He broke his back and came back FASTER than before!
The border is the boundary, if the ball goes over its 4 or 6 runs depending on if the ball bounces before crossing it
Cricket is an intriguing game with even a more intriguing history. Here are some fun facts:
The over arm delivery was invented for women as they had to wear full dress of the 1800s, and it was impossible to bowl underarm.
The first full international game of cricket was played between.....USA and Canada.
The oldest sporting rivalry (of any sport, not just cricket), is played between England and Australia, with the first test being played in 1877.
The testmatches played between England & Australia are called the Ashes. When Australia had its first ever win against England, some English women got the bails (the horizontal component of the wickets) and cremated them, and placed them into a tiny earn. This was to signify the death of English cricket as it had been defeated by a colony! The earn is kept at the Marylebone Cricket Club.
I played cricket for most of my life, and I can assure you, if you ever play against professional players... you barely see the ball before it comes at you, you also have to anticipate how the ball is going to move and bounce long before it has released the bowlers hand. Also, the ball HURTS SO MUCH if you get hit, its basically like a rock.
Comparing baseball with Cricket is like comparing checkers with Chess
Honestly you should properly learn the rules of cricket. It's a really great sport to watch and play when you understand it. It can seem like an impossibly confusing sport but learn the basics and it's pretty easy to understand. Very popular sport worldwide and I believe it's starting to catch on in america specially with the next world cup being held there. I know there are a lot of people that think cricket is too boring but I know quite a few of them just don't understand the game. When you know it then you can truly appreciate it and enjoy it.
2:47 that was in fact the last ball of Brett Lee's career, he had announced that he was retiring after that season. Definitely check out some of his highlights though.
Turn your TV to "Fox Cricket" and catch a full BBL match - it's perfect to get started with cricket as a newbie, BBL is basically Australia's cricket league, it unfolds over 1.5 months from December to January. Each match is around 2.5 hours long, so grab some snacks, kick back, and dive into the world of cricket!
His career is done means he was a very great bowler and it was his last match. It doesn't mean anything about his performance. In fact, he gave world class performance and almost did something impossible that day.
Never heard of Cricket being compared to Baseball, only the kids game Rounders being compared to Baseball.
The only thing in common is they both have a bat and a ball.
You will be pleased to learn that most elite cricket operations around the world have had expert baseball coaches in their coaching staff for over 30 years. There are reasons why baseball coaches are being used.
The most shocking moment in cricket was when 1 person in the crowd accidentally had fun while watching.
Not my sport
3:21 yes that is called boundary catch
Cricket is a very dangerous sport. As a spectator you can actually die of boredom.
The last 'overstep' is virtually impossible unless deliberate for 'spot betting' purposes. People in the know will bet large sums on a 'no ball', a 'wide', etc off a particular ball. The bowler would have been bribed by bookies to do it. It happened in an international game in England against Pakistan in 2010. After investigations, three of the Pakistan team and a bookmaker were sent to prison and banned from the game.
The odd incident at 4:40 was the batsman being given out "obstructing the field". He positioned himself to stop stop the fielder from getting to the ball to try to run out the other batsman. It is a rare offence and, of course, you are not allowed to do that.
Yeah, the reason why that man ducked down is because how fast the balls fly at them and plus it bounces off the ground so you do not know where it’s going to go sometimes could’ve been a Google lol
It was a little more than that, from where to ball landed (pitched) he expected it to bounce way more than it did. That was Sachin Tendulkar, one of the best batsmen to play the game and he got it completely wrong. And to be fair, most players would have too.
Ricky Ponting Run outs is worth a watch
His head smacked the ground, well as long as it didn't damage the ground it's all good, hitting it in with there hand back in is keeping it in play
The reason he knocked it back in was to stop it touching the ground outside the boundary which would mean it would be a six. If it doesn't touch the boundary which would be four runs (known simply as a four) and it doesn't touch the ground outside the boundary which would be six runs (known simply as a six), then they only get as many runs in before he can return it which is usually two, at most three from the longest distance. Usually the fence is the boundary but on some fields the fence is beyond the distance for the standardised boundary, so they have a makeshift one. They needed fifty nine runs to win, with only twenty four balls remaining. By stopping it from going for a four or a six, it makes it more difficult to get the score required. If you step past the crease when bowling, which is the line that you bowl behind, then it is a no ball. Which can result in a free run being awarded or a free run and a free hit, which means the batsman can't be given out except by a run out. The reason it is sometimes viewed as tampering is because it means you deny the other team the ability to get their run tally up fair and square and can cost teams the game. Australia had some controversy with that many years ago because the pace bowlers were running in so fast they'd overshoot the crease in their attempts to deliver faster and faster bowls.
After Football( soccer) Cricket is the second most watched sport in the world (2.5 BILLION); the ball is rock hard, the hardest ball in any sport. There is now a growing interest in cricket in the US and USA Cricket are starting to host International matches and have a Billion dollar budget to promote itself.
At school in the 60's 70's, I went from Monday to Saturdat, 8.45 to 5.30, Weds and Sat afternoon was sport. Three terms a year, winter was rugby, spring was hockey and summer was cricket. Enough to make you either loath spirt or love it.

@@vandanapathak1255 No, I went to a private school in Somerset, England.
I don't like sport but love it when the cricket season starts because it means it's summer here in the UK.
had a game where snow stopped play after teams innings came back day 3 after snow melted and home team scored less then 50 runs in both innings
20-20 is the most exciting cricket after 1 day. Each side is limited to the number of overs (6 balls per over) so there is a priority to score as quickly as possible.
Yet another sport invented by the English and enjoyed by the world ❤ thanks so much for your videos on here as well as Anna and JT, love them all 🙏🏻
yes, more cricket please
I am a cricket / football fan I know these sport are crazy ❤ people who are👇
When the ball reaches the boundary it's either 6 or 4 points... 3:04 this is to prevent it from touching the boundary... Keep in mind when the player that slapped the ball back into field, each time he touches the ball he's feet are off the ground
The laws of cricket explained with Stephen Fry. A bit long but good
Also
Watch one on bowling
One on catching
There are lots
Im so happy to see the Americans watch some cricket .I'm an Australian cricket fanatic and I can never get enough. Just a little bit of trivia for you but there is actually 10 different ways to get out in cricket. You have test cricket (all players must wear white) ,then theres ODI (thats 50 overs only)and the hugely popular 20twenty.Thats 20 overs only,(Thats 6balls an over)
Damn, l've never seen a no ball as big as the last one 😭🤣🤣
Yes, it's Cricket!
I am a hardcore cricket fan myself, and if anyone has any cricket questions, feel free to ask me.
Bro. You are so right. There is so much to Cricket. Fascinating sport. Cricket is a deep rabbit hole, if you care to dive in.
Happy to explain cricket to you !
Over the line is a six if it bounces inside its a four so they try to knock it back in if you catch it outside the line it is not out and is a six as long as your feet do not touch the ground outside you can throw it up and back in then come back inside to take the catch.
The ball is pardon my French, it’s a blinking hard Hand Made Leather Ball. I’ll try and send you one. As soon as I can. 😂😂😂❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m Australian and play cricket that spin bowler is Shane Warne the best bowler ranked and from Australia

Its happened more than once where the Batter has hit the ball its flown into the Stands and landed in some guys Pint of Beer the videos are on UA-cam somewhere. A Cricket ball must weigh between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces (155.9-163 grams) it also has an average speed of the bat of 90+ mph for referance the average of the bat speed of a baseball is 87mph and cricket balls have been recorded hitting the hoardings board at 138mph
There is a video i have seen on You Tube called Cricket explained if you watch Baseball or something like that , Very good video , Merry Christmas
Watching cricket on TV can be a bit boring but been there and the associated drinking is most entertaining .Playing it on the other hand as we do as ex pats once a year is exhausting ....three hours running around and trying not to get knocked out by the corky ball is a challenge ,The last time we played I got concussion from a ball thrown to a fielder just as I had taken off my helmet ....my Mrs and her mate were paralytic after drinking gin and tonics sat in front if the club house ......Happy days.
The Miller catch wasn't a catch. The ball touched the ground before he had full control of his body.
bro literally questioned the doing of the greatest batsman ever born in cricket world
start by watching Asia cup in june 2024, the play ODI (50 over). you will understand all the basic rules in 3 matches at max. Then if you like it, and want to learn the sport. watch the test format, its the best format. you will understand the technique of the batsman and bowlers, the positions the fielders are standing in etc. Watch international matches they are better. nations which are good at the sport-----> Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, West indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan (no particular order). My favorite player is Kane Williams, other good current players are Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Jasprith Bumrah, Steve Smith, Rehmath Shah, Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Rachin Ravindra. I respect how you are modestly trying and taking an interest in something out of your culture 👏👏. And i would be grateful, if I can do anything to keep your interest alive
Cricket is to baseball as chess is to checkers.
So good to see somebody who knows all the Rules, strategies and skills for both sports.
I don’t watch cricket but I do know if they hit the ball out of that radius they get an instant 6 runs so I think they were hitting the ball back in instead of risking dropping the catch and giving them 6 runs
cricket bit like watching paint dry
One of my favourite sports! I would love to see you react to Ben Stokes ❤
I was playing a game a year ago 6 mins In I was hit in the head with the ball
I stood up played 45 minutes then passed out I am the club hero

If you catch a ball cleanly it doesn't hurt at all, if you don't then... Lets just say I think I have broken all of my fingers at one point or another
there was a game we played as a kid called rounders started in England played on a diamond shaped field the ball was pitched under hand and the bat was shaped as a baseball bat but smaller we did not use gloves this is the only game i know thats close to baseball
Why was it called ROUNDERS when it was played on a DIAMOND ?
4 and 5 day cricket is the real stuff.
People say crickets boring it so is not . I love my cricket 🏏
It's definitely a hand brakeing sport the ball is a hard one it's not like a baseball
Take look at cricket t20 matches, 20 overs its almost like hit and run
Cricket is like rugby watched by rival fans sitting next to each other, drinking a few beers & having a laugh. That doesn't happen in football!
Plus, the cricket ball can land ten feet in front of you & hit you from your toes to your head, all at speeds between 50mph & 100mph! No square-box pitching zone like in baseball, cricket's brilliant! 🏏

Cricket is the only game in the world that you can play for 5 days and at the end of the game it can be a draw. 😂
It wasn't like that at first, they used to have timeless Test matches up until 1939. The longest on record went for 9 playing days over 12 actual days.

Americans struggle with the idea of pain. You need gloves to catch and pads to tackle... it's just a little pain. You'll get over it! Take AFL (Aussie Rules Football), for example. More running than soccer and lots of big hits. It's exhausting, and it hurts. The pain is part of the fun!
Baseball is for kids, and cricket for adults

He would be in good company because there are a lot of people here who need to see and hold a baseball.
the cricket ball weighs 5.5lbs and is made from cork and leather - so it's hard but with the way the ball can get hit at times it is that way so deformities happen less.
This however does have it's down side so things like helmets, pads, gloves and the box were invented - imagine back in the day getting hit in the meat and 2 veggies by one of those pacy bowlers (air speeds over 90mph, so basically as fast as a fastball)
