Miss the last MOBA theory? ►► bit.ly/1HTfoRp
Last year, ESPN's John Skipper stated that esports are "not a sport" and that on ESPN he's interested in doing "real sports." Today we're on a crusade to prove that Esports and games like League of Legends, Smite, and DOTA can stand toe-to-toe with the NFL, NBA, and the rest of the traditional ESPN roster. Not only do these games require the same rigor and commitment as traditional sports, but the structure of Esports as a whole has even started to look and feel like traditional sports leagues, with everything from internationally-recognized athletes to team sponsorships to league tournaments. It's time for Esports to get the recognition they deserve!

does anyone else think that this needs a follow up video?
Especially with the Olympic esports
eysh 84 yes
I'm thinking this might need a long 1 hour video or a book. Online gaming has a good long history. It needs to get documentated badly. I mean, this is a birth of a genre of sports.

You are are aware that weeaboo has nothing to do with a video game that was created in the US, right?
Weeaboo means a person who puts the japanese culture before their own culture. :V

What about Hockey? Oh wait, ESPN forgets the Nhl exists
hahaha
+Justin Winters
Hockey hasn't been relevant since they started to work on preventing full on drag out bloody hockey fights. Thats like Nascar no longer having car crashes because then its no long interesting to watch.
Hell if Gold had some fights that would be fun to watch.
Glenn A Then why do the Stanley Cup Finals sill receive millions of views a year?
Justin Winters
Well that is because Canadians can't give up on a dead sport. Oh and by the way Hockey doesn't have millions of viewers anymore as its been on the decline for 20 years.
+Glenn A Then explain why this playoff has been moderately viewed i n that time despite none of the Canadian teams making it in the context of it being only one round in with the Finals themselves being approximately two months away
People that say that it shouldn't be a sport because you're not running around, getting physically fit forget some things.
Darts is a sport
Poker is a sport
Cup stacking is a sport
Chess is a sport
Sport does not mean running around, it means a competitive game.
Well, all these sports make you move your arms instead of your fingers
***** poker, darts, and cup stackings aren't really sports and if they are accepted i feel like e-sports should be as well, but considering the players as "athletes" is just an insult to real athletes that look healthy and are fit, Chess is a sport and i believe it should since it at least requires a deep level of thinking but it's players shouldn't be considered as athletes either.
vagelis mandalis Have you seen the pro MOBA players? They're arms are ALL OVER THE KEYBOARD. Going from F12 to Control Z (with the same hand) in less time you can even type "Oh". Sorry. But it's true. (Though I don't really know why they would need to press F12...

ESPN sucks anyway. They don't even show sports half the time it's a bunch of people talking about sports.
FordTheKid ya and this comment section is a bunch of idiots thinking videogames are a sport
+clorox bleach And your an idiot for calling passionate esports fans idiots. Why do you have to act this way?
well its really obvious that games aren't sports in games you don't have to be athletic to be good at them but sports you have to be athletic to be good at them

chess isn't a sport
4:40 - I though LoL should fall into "various Dotas" category and Smite into "games almost no-one heard of".
You have never heard of Smite...
Smite has been huge for years, even before this theory came out in 2015. How'd you miss that???
true LoL got inspired from dota but didn't rip off the designs, but sure you can put it there
While we're on the subject... Marching Band is a sport.
Ethan Cook Dude, totally. Those gigantic shows that professional drum cores pull off are extremely hard. Even at high-school level there's a lot to it.
I respect marching band a lot, they do a lot of hardwork and it requires skill. But it's just not a sport, but that doesn't downgrade it
Jacob Bowe Well, it is compeditive, in some contexts, but I can see why it wouldn't be in some respects
Ethan Cook It is extremely hard and very interesting to listen to, but it is not a sport. No points, winners/losers, etc. That doesn't make it not very challenging and cool.
SuperAuthenticGaming You are awarded points in competitions, and the band with the most points often goes home with a trophy for the band room.

2018 news I was reading the paper and saw a part about France thinking about adding esports to the next Olympics
Although that's nothing France just can do willy-nilly, just suggest to the commitee.
I disagree as the Olympics should stick to sports that require extreme physical exertion and are athletic, not non-athletic sports
I will just say that, according to SportAccord, the association of all of the world's biggest sporting federations (like [association] football and rugby), the definition of a "sport" is any activity that a. has an element of competition; b. does not rely on any form of "luck" integrated within the game; c. is not judged to pose an undue health risk to its participants; d. is in no way harmful to any living creature; and e. does not rely on equipment provided by only one supplier. By this definition from the _de facto_ international representative of sport, certain eSports do in fact count as sport.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the FPS genre growing in E-Sports as well?
Yes but this is more based towards the biggest of the big, like how one "real" sport grew before the rest
True but I thought FPS was admitted before DOTA
It was originally was more popular but now those aren't. I mean there still popular just not as much as the others.
I like counter strike and overwatch better and they are rising as well but it is no secret that mobas are bigger
CS:GO is the biggest consistent fps CoD always has a big tourney for their newest game and overwatch isn't getting huge anytime soon prize pools for Blizzard games just aren't big
When people say esports aren't sports, my reaction is "but the word sports is in the name"
I'm sticking my neck out here, but I think that two categories of sport should exist. Mental and physical. Sports (Or games) that are more demanding in terms of physical prowess are considered physical sport, whereas sports (Or games again) where strategy, quick thinking and other mental attributes are more vital should be classed as mental. Notice how I never said neither attribute is not needed in any sport (Even chess, but you don't need much physical power to move pieces around)
I do agree with you. Even though injuries happen in eSports, they are far between, and not as severe as in physical sports. So classifying eSports as mental sports, I'm okay with.
There already is.
Athletic and Non-athletic
What most people count as just "sports" are athletic Sports, but sports such as esports count as non-athletic sports
The definition is Ever Physical Exertion(Non-Athletic) and Extreme Physical Exertion(Athletic)
There is no true line between the two, but the normal definiton if the sportsman has an average of 110bpm while active in the sport
The definition dosn't care how much physical exertion, along as you doing something with your body changes the event somehow counts. If it's Running a marathon or moving a chess-piece, both are physical exertion
eSports should never be in the same conversation as real sports it's a joke just like eSports.
Jesus christ the cringe nerds here. There is no "non physical" sports...CHESS, GAMING, FISHING IS NOT A SPORT
@@wowbruh2511 Chess is not a sport. Sports requires to be athletic
I'm just going to say this, if spelling bees, cupstacking and Poker Championships are okay, then why aren't E-Sports? Hell, I don't play or even watch E-Sports, yet I know thats fucked up.
This is how I feel. I really hate LoL, DOTA, etc, but eSports are just as competitive, if not more.
Jordan Smith I can relate to hating Lol...Dota..etc, especially because of the top down mechanic...but I do like Smite. It's the only one doing anything different and like the video said, the only one moving the genre forward. Though i still think how you level up is just wrong. Its based on how many matches you play basically instead of how well you play. So you could be level 30 just from playing alot of matches, but still not be very good at the game. Personally I would go off of the win loss record or your kill to death ratio, but thats just me.
Jordan Smith I've started following CS's pro scene about a year and a half ago and I've been very impressed by the skill and dedication that these players have.It always bothers me when people discredit what they do because "It's just a videogame".I couldn't care less about MOBA's but i think E-sports is a great thing and we should only see it grow in the future.
Yeah seriously. Not only does competitive E-sports require more eye-hand coordination than most other non fitness related sports but they're sure as hell more fun to watch. Seriously take a look at any competitive Smash or Starcraft game.
More people understand those "sports" and are more inclined to watch
"Are people really buying those giant desktops anymore?" Proceeds to stare down at giant black desktop sitting next to myself.
LEL you are not a true gamer if you play on a laptop
Jeroen Van Der Meer but i don't have the money for a desktop :'(
ScarfaceGuru Desktops cost less than laptops, so everything's fine!
Razqua me too lol
Jeroen Van Der Meer Who wants to be a "true gamer" it just makes you sound like a fat, unhygienic virgin.
Sports requires four things
1) Physical Exertion - Any Movement counts, if its running a marathon, or moving a chess piece, it's physical exertion. What most people view this as is extreme Physical exertion, which is a requirement for athletics. This stops watching TV from being a sport
2)International Governing Body - Some sort of organisation, usually French. This stops games people create from being sports
3)Skill or learning curve - Any skill, or need to learn that will always affect the event. This stops gambling like slot machines from being sports, but allows Poker as a skillful Poker player will beat a unskillful one
4)Competition or scoring system - A goal to achieve victory and a way to calculate this.
Moving your fingers isn’t physical exertion.
Birdy Speakz Exert - Make a physical or mental effort
By that logic, a piano recital is a sport. I guess I'm a athlete now
I feel you, MatPat. Your eSports problems remind me a lot of all of my frustrations as a marching band member. 8-15 hour practices, top physical form, incredible precision, teams, and designated competitions. Why it isn't considered a sport baffles me. So, you have a sympathizer, even though I'm not much of a gamer.
Huge fan of your stuff, guys. Love the videos. Keep it up!
ShadowAceSonic even though I may never understand how to 'win' marching band, but I hope your sport gets recognition :)
@@pepsiman4418 You can win all sorts of competitions in marching band! Best music, best show, best form, best winds--there are tons of categories that are judged and awarded separately in marching band competitions. It's a bit like competitive diving, where various groups or individuals are compared to determine a winner, rather than competing directly against each other on a field.
ShadowAceSonic oh ok
I would like to say one thing, and most of you will probably agree.

Do I watch or care about sports?
No and Yes, respectively. No, I don't watch televised sports (traditional sports). I do occasionally watch local sport events, but I prefer to play myself, rather than watch.
With Esports, I'm pretty much the same. I occasionally watch them but prefer to play.
I don't watch either but it is something people enjoy and it should be recognized by everyone.
Eu4 PLeb can you at least understand why people have that "superiority complex" about their game
I play myself every night. Sorry, couldn't resist. The playing with myself that is, I never apologize for a joke.
thats actually a common mentality lyrim
I think watching football is dumb... any of the sports that drone on forever with little play time. I prefer playing it myself. One thing I will NEVER understand... is watching a competitive MOBA game. It's so uninteresting to the point where I can't see why people like it.

MATPAT. I have a fnaf 4 theory. After the bite of 87 that kid that got bit became marionette and kid that got shot by purple guy became baloon boy ( or vise versa). In fnaf 4 when u play, flowers are by ur bed so maybe you as a kid seeing nightmare animatronics is part of the coma that you were in, after the bite of 87. This is my fnaf 4 never says "you died" because you are in a coma, just dreaming.
Thevidbros the problem with your theory is in FNAF 1 the phone guy said "it's amazing that the human body can live without the frontal lobe"
There is a flatline sound after the kid disappears on night 6. He did die eventually.
Is it just me, or are more comments saying "take cover! The FNAF 4 fanboys are here" than the actual
Fanboys??
Jack Richardson Don't worry, it's a side effect of mass hysteria.
Jack Richardson I just saw ONE comment actually asking MatPat for the theory. The rest were warning him about the fanboys...

The statement Matt made about the LoL World Finals having more viewers than the NBA finals is untrue. Most people watch LoL individually in contrast to the amount of people who watch the NBA finals. This means more devices are being accounted for the individuals watching the LoL finals than the families or group of friends watching the NBA.
Doesn't mean it's untrue.
Twitch counts the amount of accounts logged in and watching. Many people watch twitch streams with other people in their home so really the number should be higher than he stated.
WinsWins dude i watched the lol final with 5 friends on one pc xD your statement is untrue. sry
But most of the times Americans watch nba but Lol you can watch around the globe
uEmeraldKing basketball is the 2nd most popular sport in the world and by far the most popular sport in china. LoL and other esports are definitely growing but they arent as big as the NBA yet.
It should also be noted that whenever you talk about worldwide esports viewership numbers that multiple Chinese streaming sites are competing against eachother and have been known to inflate their viewer totals by a substantial amount in order to appear more dominant.
As a gamer, I don't think gaming should be recognized as a sport. It's essentially saying that sitting on a chair rapidly pressing buttons falls under the same category as running through a field tossing/hitting balls to each other and (depending on the sport) making physical contact with other players.
With sports you need speed, endurance, and reflexes. You also need to make use of your entire body. But with gaming, you just need reflexes and speed, but those only apply to your fingers, while you yourself could be physically out of shape and absolutely helpless in a real sport.
While slightly true, you also have to use your brain. What to buy, who to heal, how long you spend in a lane, and weather or not to press an attack. Split Second decisions. A lot of it is quick thinking. I can respect your opinion, but I feel that it can be considered a sport.
The meaning of "Sport" is to use physical exertion and skill in a individual or team competition for entertainment. Gaming doesn't seem very physical considering your sitting in a chair for the duration of the game but when MatPat showed me that players tear muscles in their arms in gaming competitions, I couldn't believe that. That one clue shows that gaming is a legit sport. A sport where you physically exert energy and show your skill through a computer! Think I'm lying? Look up the meaning sport.
Chess is also a sport. Fuck off
HaloAndMinecraftFtw Definition of sport: "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Big thing imo is "physical exertion", I don't think pressing buttons counts. I agree with you.
masterman3349 exactly. ESPN should stick with real sports like Poker and cup stacking and scrabble tournaments.
I love how GT uses old NES classics OST. Props to using The Guardian Legends', love that one

MOBA mmm.. I hate the idea that MOBA represents gaming.
this is only my opinion ......
I agree.
But I guess that Moba are the most similar to traditional sports.
Shu Sawada Fuck MOBAs. Unless you have a full team in a skype all or raidcall those games are unplayable.
HowDo ILogin then ur a noob get over it. Pro players switch teams all the time so dont say just cuz they know each other they're an exceptiob
Shu Sawada 100% agreed with you
DJ KaZ No, he wasn't saying that the problem was that they don't know each other, but that the problem was communication, which obviously pro teams have. Fuck you.
Why would we want our game competitions to be shown on ESPN? Let's get a broadcaster that respects gaming as a sport to make the money, and help evolve the sport.
It is not us that want it that way, if ESPN doesnt take this chance to enter the E-Sports scene, they are going to lose that market; companies like IBM and Radioshack went bankrupt for not evolving with the time, not saying that ESPN is going bankrupt but losing a emerging market of billions of dollars can make anyone puke blood if they understimated how big it would be in the future.
Because it's a "well set" base for this for TV. Sport based channels are about a similar type of competition and have the resources for broadcasting it on TV.
If we should want it on TV, that involves the matters of broadening the community and growing the public acceptance of Gamers.
So ESPN will lose a great market? They have NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, all of the College tournments, and world wide, they have Liga MX, Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Copa Libertadores, FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro, Summer and Winter Olympics. I don't think they need E-Sports. But E-Sports need their own TV
we already do that......
if gaming is a sport, then chess is a sport, boardgames are a sport, doing math is a sport, spelling b's are sport, see it's rediculous
These videos get me so hyped!
Honestly, my biggest reasoning for why I sorta look down on esports in comparison to normal sports, (while being a big gamer.) Is that active sports do get people, active. They have peak physical health. Esports, that's not really a requirement. Both types of sports can get injuries from play, but the esports injuries are from their extensive 'training.' Carpal tunnel and arthritis like problems simply come from the extensive play they under take. While the only thing extensive training for sports does, is increase their physique, increase the resistance their muscles have, the rate oxygen is transported by the heart, all good things that not only benefit the sport, but the rest of their life too.
Eh.. I get that all sport people care about is the physical aspect but the only reason I can even speak English is cause of games not cause of my 2 years of football, "real sports" increase physical attributes but it depends on the sport tbh cause some of em (like golf) don't seem to me like I'll play them for 5 years and be buff af after, meanwhile most esports increase your awareness, decision making, thinking, communication etc...
I just feel like barely anyone takes a look at this discussion from both sides, yes esports don't increase physical stuff, and yes sports don't increase mental stuff, unless you wanna talk chess and stuff but that's not a "real sport" either is it?
Lets see here. Down below:

Counter strike isn't the style of game that this video is about though
pwnedragon19 The FPS genre is honestly the one that's most likely to make it to the mainstream. It already has massive mainstream appeal, and is far more intuitive for spectators.
pwnedragon19
It's still an esport game though, it's always worth mentioning
pwnedragon19 Yes, and for poor reason, too. CS still has the largest tournament viewership and largest tournament purses. Game theory just centered this piece on MOBAs because it is what he knows; tu quo, indeed. The FPS genre would be more relatable, imo, to the average non-gamer and would have made for a better platform for this diatribe.

I loved this video and I'll try my best to point out somethings I observed about accessibility of PC gamming in my country (Brazil). First, a quick wikipedia article says: "Video games were not permitted for import into Brazil until the 1990s, and were then heavily taxed as non-essential goods. As a result, a black market developed around pirating games, driven by the lack of official channels for purchasing games. Many game companies avoided expansion into the country for these reasons until the 2010s.[2] Blaming high tariffs, Nintendo officially left the market in 2015, but returned in 2017."
Knowing that it's easier to get to a few points:
1 - Games are expensive around here, specially consoles, as you can see in the cheapiest brand new PS4 500GB costing around U$416.05 I found online (against the U$299 on the US), that's mostly taxes.
2 - Games are expensive for US. You see, Brazil has a huge Income inequality and laws and regulations that kind of perpetuate this situation.
"Brazil's heavy taxes built into consumer prices include high taxes on foods, which burdens the poor. The tax load of those in the higher income brackets earning more than 30 times the minimum wage a month amounted to 26.3 per cent. In contrast, those with a monthly income of less than twice the minimum wage were taxed almost twice the amount at 48.8 per cent."
On top of that 25,4% of the people earn US$ 5,50 a day (it takes 76 days of work for a person like this buy a PS4), and 6,4% earn less than U$1,9 a day.
Yeah, I know, that's a WAY worst problem envolving political corruption, market pressure, bank control and even just bad administration, but nonetheless reveal a great problem in one of a HELL of a gamming community.
3 - PCs are way cheapier to have in a home, since it helps in studies and work (and you can buy an old used one and it will still be somewhat ok). In addition, League of Legends has a long range of PC specs which CAN run it in a somewhat "fun" capacity and also is a free game. No wonder why it is the largest gamming community in Brazil and it has it's own local server.
4 - Online games are harder to pirate or fake. The games need local servers to build up competition and - even with Brazil's vast quantity of "private servers" - official competitivity is a pain in the butt for paid games.
I know I digress a lot, but I'm trying to produce a game here and I ALSO love playing and watching games. Therefore - in the actual political and economic situation of my country (specially after the 2017 coup) - I can not stay silent. I hope more and more people gets aware of this to maybe change our situation, not only in gaming, but in general
They broadcast Billiards, poker and spelling bee but say gaming isn't a sport? lol ESPN is a joke. I'm pretty sure if Chess us considered a sport the gaming should be too
Just because it's on ESPN it does not make it a sport. Gaming should be its own category and not called a sport. Same with poker and stuff
I've never see a spelling bee on ESPN they only put poker when there really isn't anything else on. MOBA games are not sports.
I don't consider any of those except pool to be sports. Sports must require a physical challenge along with competition to be a sport. Card games, board games, etc. are not sports to me
issai they are sports be uase of the mental level required, sure you dont need to be able to dadh 100 yards in 2 seconds but you do need reflexes
Game Theorist makes it clear in the video he doesn't know much about sports. If so then who is he to say it's a sport or not. Sports are physical activity. Games are not sports they our games. Their own category
The NBA and league of legends comparison is unfair. The NBA is an American competition on a channel you can only watch in America but people from anywhere in the world could have watched League of legends.
II watch NBA here in the UK on BT Sport but only if I'm awake at 4:30am
James Gardner I can watch NBA in the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, and England.
James Gardner NBA is incredibly popular in China.
James Gardner lol
You just disproved matpat gg
Music from the guardian legend? Nice one!
Coming back to this video after 3 NBA teams were announced to have League of Legends Championship Series teams next season
But seriously, why are we even debating this? Aren't sports considered games anyway?
This guy... He's onto something
GhostingGhost But sadly they are seperated by corporate ties, aka ESPN or all the National series sports
Sixshotz1337 Exactly. Down to it's a core, a sport is a game, just with money and an audience involved.
GhostingGhost All sports are games, but not all games are sports. Let me show you an example:
All dogs are animals, but not all animals are dogs.
Sports can be categorized as games, but so can a lot of other things that aren't sports. Chutes & Ladders is a game. Shall we equate Chutes & Ladders to the NFL? Of course not. When an NFL athlete is playing Chutes & Ladders, he is not playing a game that can be called a sport.
Gabriel360LIVE NFL is nothing but an organization. Hell, Chutes and Ladders could be made into a sport, but it never will be. If Poker and Chess are considered sports, so can Chutes and Ladders.
Wait....the hell is basketball?
Corny
daniel lavone Ball is life
A Man From Minnesota I believe it was created by those even lower then those of the console peasants.
A Man From Minnesota YOU LIE!!!
daniel lavone I don't know
wait what's a ball
Two years later and we're looking at Overwatch league having City based teams and regular season scheduling. ESports is slowly becoming more mainstream
The three main components of a sport is skill, competition, and physical activity. I know gaming has a little bit of physical activity but that is not enough to be considered a sport.
To answer the ending question, no, I do not watch sports. Something about them has never captivated me and I just sit there wondering why it entertaining to watch a group of people chase a ball. It imagine it must be what my parents feel when they see me playing games.
Decaying Reverie Same here. Then, there's the rules. SO MANY F*CKING RULES.
Decaying Reverie The best is every 4 years, when there is the football world championship, the whole country goes crazy and doesn't speak about anything else....and I'm seemingly the only one around who couldn't care less about this....
Or those funny people who take the statement "I don't care about sports" as some kind of ultimate sin or blasphemy or something.
Decaying Reverie See, I'll play sports. I'll only watch Formula(ic) One, as that's something pretty fun to watch.
Decaying Reverie My sister watches football screaming at the tv and I just shake my head thinking "Whats so great about a game you can barely watch because there's a fucking commercial every 10 seconds."
***** M8 that was poor b8
0.6/10
Not even that good.
Sports are competitive games. I think esports should be considered a serious thing.
I don't care if they aren't considered a real sport. Just as long as it's treated with the same respect.
It is,sport just isn't the right word for it
CavNSoul Rotmg that's why its an "esport". Just like NASCAR is a "motor" sport.
You don't have to have talent for video games
Calm and eat some chip someone just lost their bronze v promos
SuperJoshuaAguilar
I suppose lots of people consider chess a sport
Mat Pat should do a follow up to this video

>Talks about balance
You sure you're talking about the right game, MatPat?
DOTA2 has more hero balance than LOL
Yep. So does Smite, imo, though not to te same extent as DOTA.
Chuck Norris II no i play smite and lol and smite is not balanced sorry some heroes are just op af
Peter Vreča I disagree. There are some balance issues in pretty much all games. The issue is that in SMITE, there usually aren't more than 1 or 2 OP gods at any time, and even then, Hi-Rex generally needs them quickly enough that it isn't usually an issue. Also, many of the gods that are "OP" just require more game knowledge, etc. to effectively combat, much like how Yi is considered OP in lower elos. My issues with league lie with how they buff to sell more skins, how they take way too long to apply nerfs, how they blatantly play favorites, how they leave some champions to rot for years without changing them at all (See Yorick, Warwick, Galio, Urgot), how they rarely account for power creep, and how they often cater to the higher ranked and pro players while ignoring the majority of the player base. I'm not saying SMITE doesn't have it's own problems. It has plenty. But in my opinion, it does a much better job at balancing than riot overall.
+HoldTheReggae right...and what makes you say that?
Dynamite Headdy soundtrack at the end of the episode!
You thought wrong if you believed you could hide that.
That moment when 2 years later ESPN features the Overwatch finals...
Oh if only i were a billionaire , i would make a damn channel with only eSports.
DammitSinged dammit singed
DammitSinged I love your name. XD
DammitSinged pretty sure, twitch beat you to it...
lol
I'd be right there with you. Twitch has something like it, but that's not as accessible (as mat pat said) No it's not hard to get to but If you are like me where your internet sucks ass, you can't watch in HD or use anything on the internet to watch it in general (Without going crazy). Put it on the TV and you get something easy to get to, requires a TV (Which I'm pretty sure more people have TVs than computers.)
Plus I would just LOVE to see League played on TV and recognized by more than just gamers as a sport.
Mattpat, you miss an important aspect of getting esports accepted: the understanding level of the audience. Here's part of the problem, by way of example:
I've been playing games since the early 80's. I have a decent amount of free time to game in my adult life, I game with my kids, with my wife, and by myself. I play all kinds of games, on both console and PC, everything from casual clickers to sports games to puzzlers to platformers to RPGs to card battle games.
And for the life of me I can't figure out what the f**k is going on, on one of those MOBA screens.
Characters are too small, and their movements are unpredictable without having a deep knowledge of team tactics for that specific game. Icons are all over the place, cluttering up the view for anyone who doesn't know what they mean. Messages pop up and disappear before you can read them. The map is essentially useless.
Some of these same sorts of things can be said about the more physical sports, to be sure. But most all of us have a sense of moving our bodies, throwing a ball, running, etc. that translates some of what's going on intuitively. But even people like me, with long and broad gaming experience, often can't tell what's happening at any given moment in a MOBA.
Everybody watching this needs to read this comment
The Internet Peasant I think given any amount of time you're eventually bound to learn some of the basics of what's going on. I only watch The Super Bowl and I barely understand the ins and outs of football. It's a state of mind I believe that you want to learn from watching and dedicating the time to watching rather than just clicking on the live stream and thinking everything will be good to go for watching.
I'm in the same boat as you, I play pretty much everything but MOBAs and really have no clue what's going on during them, but that's because I've never had the interest to learn.
Completely agree!
lol Have someone who has never seen football watch it and try to explain it to you. I still have no idea what a linebacker is. If you have played any type of RTS, you can get a jist of what's happening in a MOBA
Exactly... Since games aren't standardized... the common audience member won't get it
Especially since the media pretty much looks down upon gaming
However I feel like we're going a long way and after 10 years our society will accept gaming like how Japan already does

Emmanuel Esparza ah ok. well then what i would have said is: yes... yes i did.

I did and I also came back to tell Mat to get working on the FNAF 4 theory muahahahaha
Hey Matt! I know this video is a little bit older, but is there anyway I could get the sources you used for this video? I'm writing a research paper for my college english class on this topic and all the statistics and things in this video would really help! Thanks!
you should do a follow up video to this!
actually mattpat, I think the reason why the NBA finals got 26 millions views in abc, while the LoL got 32 millions in twitch, is because abc is mostly American, the NBA is an American popular event, but not worldwide, abc being an American channel, LoL in the other hand, have gamers worldwide (NA, EU, SA, RUS, EA) and twitch is accessible to everyone who have internet
Crow I live in Denmark, and I can still watch ABC. So can many I know.
ABC is a Disney-owned company and as you probably know, Disney maintains great ties with the Eastern Continents. With these ties, it wouldn't be any problem at all really to broadcast North American sports to those countries. How else do you think some kids in Asia have their own favorite NBA player?
Crow Yo In the Philippines we can still watch ABC
No no no, the NBA as a whole is a worldwide league with people all across the globe watching. It is very popular in European, Asian, and South American countries. I don't think you have a fair assumption
Crow You do know that the NBA has influenced multiple international professional basketball leagues (it's a big reason they use the sport in the Olympics). So, in short, the NBA Finals do get watch internationally. The only American sport that isn't too internationally sought after, is the NFL.
Who else came here just to see all of the fnaf 4 comments?

I love how "True Sports" fans down in the comment section is trying their best to prove that Gaming isn't sport without knowing the actual definition for Sports.
Sport (British English) or sports (American English) includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which,[1] through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators.
Let's start with the basics and the only argument sport fans have. "Include all forms of competitive physical activity". If kicking a ball is consider a physical activities why does moving your fingers doesn't ? Is it because finger movements are to non important ? Pitchers in Baseball heavily rely on their fingers to control the ball, without using their fingers, pitchers will always throw straight balls that are easy to hit. Not only that, Gaming have a special kind of physical activity that "True sports" doesn't have, Brain activities, Gaming require a lot of instant decision making and tactical thinking. In "True sports" the player is relying on his body instinct to play, Sport Athletes usually can't make crucial and tactical decision very well because most of their brain capacity is focusing on the body. So Gaming pass the first condition with points to spare.
Next one. I honestly want so skip this one because anybody who use this as their augment is retarded. "Through casual or organized participation" E-Sports tournaments already are organized very carefully and have many investor ready to advertised their products. Cheating and Match Staging still happens very often in "Real sports" such as footballs and baseball. Gaming has a shockingly lower numbers of cheating and match staging compare to just soccer and baseball alone.
Next one. what physical ability does soccer improve ? Speed, Agility, Focus, Aim. What does FPS games improve ? Fast pace hand movements, Endurance to keep your focust even after a 30 minutes game, Focus, Aim, Decision making, Reaction time. Saying Gaming doesn't improve physical attributes is like saying reading a book doesn't make you any smarter.
Last one. Okay let's just skip this because this one is obvious. If E Sports doesn't entertain the players and the audience, no one will even come.
As society grows Humans uses more and more of their brain and less of their physical strength. Why do you think Guns were invented ?
I know most sports fans won't even read this comment and instead attack me for defending gaming anyways, you guys are too stubborn to accept new things.
Oh and by the way, calling yourself a gamer does not make your argument of "GAMINZ IZ NAT SPORTZ" valid and acceptable.
tom mike esports isn't a sport
**claps**
Raj 1219 *slow clap*
tom mike true I just laugh at all of the comments that say E-sports isn't a sport even tho it says *sports* in the name *E-sports*
NegaSound No it's not. 😕 it's a game not a sport.
Darn... I just realised that in around 7:30 Matpat explains how LCS Branding works while showing an "LCS" bracket of StarCraft 2 players (not teams).
16:50
You have no idea...
***** Will anyone who game on PC can't go to console these days unless it is exclusive. I touched the PC for convenient reasons back at 2012 and now I hardly use consoles.
***** doesn't matter , developers still based their design on console which is easier , less investment , less piracy and a lot more profit (exception for competitive games such as MOBA genre) , since pc got pretty wide range of spec while console is fixed it's a lot more easy for developers , ironic isn't it ? every game developed on pc , but aim toward console , it's just good business.
PC I growing and will overtake consoles in the coming decades
UnnTHPS Not buying, building.
Saotome Alto its because the majority of people use consoles and people get scared of having to build a PC when its as easy as building a Lego set so the big game companies try to appeal to the console peasents more
It's here....
FNAF 4
No duh but Matt pat get off your bum and do some research on fnaf 4 we are all waiting
+Matthew H I know really
***** sex end.
I came here to say the exact same thing XD He-HeH!
kirby mon me too :D
My parents told me that I couldn't get money from gaming but look at this
Matpat your a life saver. Had to do a argumentative essay on esports and I remembered this video. 👍
You guys know he won't be doing the FNAF4 theory until someone figures out how that box is opened.
This could take a few weeks, and some are even thinking it'll be opened on the Halloween update, so, buckle the fuck up, it's gonna take awhile.
Tom Carr Lol.
I don't think u can open that thing
Tom Carr or he could do 2 parts...
Or he can do a theory on the box
Tom Carr well you know Scott he releases all of theses games wayyyyy be for they were meant to be released so that update mite come sooner that we think but that just an idea
Omg I am laughing my ass off reading the comments telling MatPat to run because the FnaF Fanboys are coming 😂
Ellie Carver I second that.
Um excuse me I am a girl so there are not all fanboys there are also girls
Ellie Carver hmmmmmmm yesss. i am one of them. derp.
Run! Run! The fanboys are coming! Save MatPat and his family! Remember: FNaF 4 has been out for a while now!
Ellie Carver I feel sorry for MatPat .-.
I miss this game theory it was another time
Wow, I'm watching this in 2018, and I'm so happy that E-Sports have become what it is today, and I'm sure this video helped *at least* a bit to get it to where it is now. Good on you, MatPat. Good on you.
