Husqvarna 576xp "Introduction" Video, A No Base Gasket Build & Squish Band Explained

  • Basically took a new Husqvarna 576xp and took out the base gasket to get a little more compression. Did a real time top end removal and replacement and explained what happens when the base gasket is removed to compression and the small changes to port timing resulting from the cylinder being lowered.
    As of January 1st 2019, that saw STILL is in commercial use. No issues that I am aware of. Proves the point that build concept done right works and is viable as it has not effected reliability in a meaningful way. PARTLY because of the width of the flange surfaces where the cylinder meets the cases. But one thing I pointed to and edited out (a mistake) was the vertical flange thickness but the front or transfers doesn't give much material to "deck" or turn on a lathe to remove the same .020 removing the base gasket does. So while saws like the 660 Stihls, than don't have much surface area for a sealing surface, decking the cylinder it the only reliable way to increase compression, these 576's have a lot of sealing surface area lending them to a reliable no base gasket build concept.

    Wanted to say thank you very, very much for taking all the time & effort involved to record & share your knowledge and experience. I bought a 576xpat based on your tear down and impressions of the build quality and robustness of this saw. While researching which saws look to offer better longevity, of course, you come across all kinds of contradicting opinions, and criticisms about weight etc... with little, if any proof. You, however take the time to SHOW the difference, for example, between the Stihl (also excellent saws in the pro line) and the Husky cylinder, and other components, as well as your commentary on weight being due to more robust parts. It's very much appreciated, thanks again!!!

    For years I did not know Jack about what you were discussing about Husqvarna 372 but I do, now. There are some things I like about the 372 and some things I do not like. I cannot say it is a better design than moms 440 but it sure cranks a lot easier than my big Stihl saws. Weight wise, it is about the same as my 440 and a lot less than my 460. It does seem to oil a lot better than my Stihl saws. I have the oiler turned down to just slightly less than the midpoint of the adjuster with a 20 inch bar. Had a few problems with the supplied carb but I have it straightened out, now., primarily due to a leaking needle.

    Does the Auto Tune adjust its self after a muffler mod? Or did you have to re-tune it?

  • @ctrader5817

    Great video thanks Walter! Can the gasket just be removed for the performance improvement or does the piston have to be adjusted as well? I don’t have any tools to measure to that size of thousandth.
    As well, on muffler mod, do you jus bore hole into muffler and add piece of pipe like you did? Does diameter and length of pipe matter?
    Many thanks. I’m new to saws and mods but eager to learn.

    I have watched all the 372 Xtorq videos and don't see where you modify the intake divider? Can you elaborate the gains? Thanks

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  8 років тому

      A long discussion... I have and will build a couple 372 X-Torqs with the dividers in the filter holder and intake boot removed. All thing being equal that change by itself isn't going to make a lot more power. But what it will do is wash the sides of the piston where the x-torq channels are with a fuel/air/oil mix vs. straight air. That's got to help longevity. Another observation is it seems to make them run better at idle and low RPM's, and they start easier. The down side is you risk destroying those intake parts if not skilled.With down stream changes in the port timing, muffler outlet size, compression, intake timing etc. You have the larger x-sectional area of the now gutted intake to help feed the monster.

    I got one of those… I just got the cheap moly popup piston kit for it and I found a manual adjustment carburetor to pull out that self adjusting version??? Guess we’ll find out how good it will run… it’s just a cool lower transfer design…I did a chop saw and thought it was just a wicked feed system so I was looking for the cylinder design in a saw… it think it’s a stronger saw then the Stihl would be???

    • @afleetcommand

      @@afleetcommand yes indeed… yes, that’s actually the only problem that I really have with the auto tune system and that’s that they allow the engine’s to run at their top rpm’s or you don’t have the ability to make a selection were you can choose to be running rather rich and actually limit their top rpm’s electronically… I’m often just 11,800 or 12k on most of my saw’s as I don’t want to allow them the opportunity to free rev up at 13,500 or 13,800 or 14k in the ported version’s… my little ported 350’s want to four stroke at 14,500-14,800 but I’m very rich and just 12,500 max as the actual chain speed in the cut is much closer to the 11k type numbers… I’m just not really comfortable with those super high rpm’s and since it’s really only ever in that upper stratosphere in a free rev no load type situation then I’m probably over protective of their engine’s and I keep them quite retarded and very rich… I’ve found that they have super torque and they’ll bounce and clean up under the heavy load when you really dig in and twist them through a log and they just sing and rip right through… I’m definitely over protecting of my engine’s as almost all of them were complete rebuilds from the ground up…so they are all much more sentimental than I had just bought them off the shelf, so to speak…. I had a good dozen saw’s from my buddies company over a two year period and they were all getting over rev’ed and had transferring and damage…he had been mixing 50:1 with pump gas so with the additional ethanol probably was really somewhere closer to 75:1 in the actual combustion chamber/cylinder because the alcohol’s cutting of the oils film strength and lubrication abilities… since he’s adopted the 32:1…4 Oz oil per gallon of pump gas and all those saw’s with carb adjustment are at 12,500 not 13,500 and rich… there’s been zero engine damage issues… they are still dropping them out of the tree’s and running them over but they do walk around pinning the throttle to warm them up a little less often and they are surviving the abuse a little better having a little additional oil and a little less top speed… no one has even noticed that reducing of the top rpm’s as the cut speed is right there where they were previously…I’m not interested in massive engine changes that burn much additional fuel or make additional heat… small change’s to help them run as efficiently as possible I’m interested in…pick the right tools for the job at hand kinda logic…I think just as much about the fuel mileage as I do about the ultimate power of the engine… I have no desire to cut through a log a couple seconds faster if I’ve got to refuel it twice as often. ??? I’ve been playing with the 372 Xtorq with the little pocket cut into it’s intake on the cylinder to pre-mix the fuel mixture and air in the intake instead of the cylinder…so I’m probably going to be using that technique like on (the 372 Xtorq engine) for this one as well with a few little changes to the intake side to eliminate the fresh air hitting the piston’s and slowly moving back into the actual intake boot area possibly… the little pockets created in the cylinder appears to be doing just what I needed or wanted them to do and there’s some mixture happening before the cylinder bore so hopefully that will be a good solid bump in the engine’s longevity….???? 👍😁. Awesome stuff, thanks much… love that you in-bolted that cylinder without completely disassembly of the entire intake assembly…that’s a big work and time savings to get into the piston!!! 👍😁💪🇺🇸😁👏😎

      @@afleetcommand I will say that if a guy like’s the look of the high top 372 series he be doing a back flip over the popup top on the 576’s… they are definitely a high top looking set of plastic’s… I had a complete flywheel and the intake assembly come with the complete 576 I found a I just realized that in a lot of a half dozen 372 bottom end’s I picked up that there’s a 576 case’s so it’s looking like a crank and topend kit and there’s almost a second one here… so it’ll be the more experimental version maybe… I don’t care for massive amounts of compression or other more radical changes to an engine normally as I’ve found I end up loosing my fuel mileage very quickly for small power gain… I’m really liking the 365 48mm bore version’s with a 20” or 24” as I’ve got plenty of power to do that “work” and I’m filling up the gas tank less often… just enough to be able to work efficiently…as frugally as possible is my modus operandi ….👍😁

      I'll read that later all the way thru, but think u are over analyzing , they are rev limited as well They aren't going to hurt them selves in fact the one thing you will get is a constant fuel mixture across the multiple seasons. IF you clean up the combustion chambers and do a muffler mod along with getting the squish in the .020 to .025 range they will survive pro level use for a few years. You know how I know? I did a few like that back in the 2015-6 era and they still are out earning money. Did a video on one a few years later in around 2016 I think. First one I did like that 2014-15 came back crushed.

    Did you ever do any mods on the other 576 saw? I just bought an older low compression 570 nonXP. I've pulled the cylinder and the piston is scored with some light Al transfer. I think I can polish the cylinder and save it. I need to order another piston for it. Tried ordering a 365 and 372 piston from Hutzl and they are the wrong size and configuration. Didn't realize the 570 piston had a ported piston it appears. The 365 piston appears to be ported also but is too small. Thanks Ken

    why did you only grind the intake skirt? i always thought the intake and exhaust timing should be Square

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  5 років тому +2

      What is the definition of "square"? I shoot for numbers and on the intake looking to get to the high 70's BTDC on those saws. Dropping the cylnder picks up a bit and either lowering the intake port or a little off the skirt gets the rest. I shoot for specific number ( not saying) on the exhaust as I rather have torque than R's on those. Dropping the cylinder helps that as well and really don't have to do much for what I'm looking for.

      Best thing is compression, and if you have the tools, measure the "squish" and cut the cylinder base so you end up at around .020. Will make a difference in any two stroke. Also even before that check the squish band to be certain it is nice and flat. Some times you have to trim a little around the edge of the combustion chamber to get a flat squish band THEN measure then cut the base to get to around .020 plus or minus a couple thou. I don't do any work over the internet or by mail. And am backed up with other projects pretty much for the year, but thanks for the consideration.

AND a Huztl 372 is a different animal than an OEM, especially in how they run. As far as chain breaks.. you have to be kidding me. A 660 or similar vs. a 372 390? James Steele the auto tune 576xp was built before the 550-562xp auto tunes where out. Because of this it was the first generation auto tune. You can't plug this saw into the computer as it is a closed circuit. If you have a problem with the module you will have to replace the module that sits on top of the carb.
