  • If only I'd have pushed a bit harder, I might've quickly figured out what was wrong. What does this mean? You'll have to watch the video to find out!

Great, dirty buttons. It’s amazing that it would cost more to fix it than to buy new TV. It will be interesting to see what you have planed for it.

It's not looking like my plans for it will pan out, unfortunately. I do have another Sony Trinitron of similar size that would be much easier to modify. I was just hoping I could use this one instead.

I had a similar issue with the buttons on my old crt. Some of them didn't work and some did the wrong function like yours. I ended up desoldering and submerging them in some isopropyl alcohol and actuating them occasionally, and after reinstalling them they all work perfectly.

Tried soaking them for a bit the way you mentioned. They're working ok, but I think there must be quite a bit of tarnish on the contact surfaces as I had to really mash and massage the actuators before the contact resistance dropped enough to work with no problems. I'll see how long they last, but I'll probably order some replacements to keep on hand if they start acting up again.

Pretty sure on your set it can only do component, the rgb is locked out.

While I'm kinda leaning on that possibly being the case, I had looked through the datasheet for the IC that takes the video inputs (TDA9587) and saw that there are some settings done through I2C that control the RGB/YUV portion. I'm hoping these settings are stored on the EEPROM and can be modified to change the input type. I already dumped the EEPROM and will connect the SCL and SDA lines on the board to a logic analyzer to see what I can capture, if anything useful, and see if I can figure it out from there.

Have you ever attempted to ATSC Converter box for a TV like this?

    • @ThatElectronicsFool

Honestly, I've never modded a CRT TV in any way, and I hadn't worked on one in years. This would be the first I would try to modify and it's not looking like I'll be successful. Too much functionality is crammed into one IC.

@@ThatElectronicsFool The thing is I wanted to see what ATSC 1.0 looked like on a nice CRT without all the horrendous Color bleed, and other problems Comb Filters on NTSC TVs create. Your existing Component ports may be successful if you can find a Component Capable Tuner.

Oh, I see what you mean. And for some reason it seems I'm not getting notified when people reply to my replies. So I'm just now seeing this.
I'll have to look into ATSC boxes as I don't have one available.
