    The Drinkable Book is a life saving tool that filters water and teaches proper sanitation & hygiene to those in the developing world.
    Each book is printed on technologically advanced filter paper, capable of killing deadly waterborne diseases. Each page is coated with silver nanoparticles, whose ions actively kill diseases like cholera, typhoid and E. coli.
    Once water is passed through the filter, bacteria count is reduced by over 99.99%, making the filtered water comparable to tap water in the United States of America.
    This filter paper will revolutionize water purification. It costs only pennies to produce, making it by far the cheapest option on the market. Each filter is capable of giving someone up to 30 days worth of clean water, and each book is capable of providing someone with clean water for up to 4 years.

    I'd like to see a demonstration of them using the filter on some of the actual water pulled from the garbage filled canal. It doesn't mean much when you use water from a US water system to start with.

    Having spent many years in India.....the problem with this and other water technology is that the people who need this....can't read any language, let alone English. You put this in their hands and they would probably burn it! The problem needs to be addressed on all levels, education, hygiene, sanitation, government. I would love to hear how they plan to implement this....it is a great idea for a quick fix as I see it.

      I'm sure they have thought this through and will not just give it to them and let them figure it out for themselves. They will obviously give them a physical demonstration of how to use it.
      OMG these people are not stupid, they have fucking PhD's. They will be right there helping people figure out how to use these books and to make sure they are using them correctly. Why go through all of this effort and NOT think about these possible obstacles? Common sense is really lacking in most of these comments.

    a civilization that cannot deliver clean water to the poorest, should focus on deliver clean water to the poorest but I think about permanent solution. this drinkable book looks fancy - it's so well designed all hipsters would have one for any money - but I feel like it's not the right solution, how much money will it cost to deliver it to everyone who drinks from puddle every year. Would you use it everyday instead having normal water source? I like you want to help and filtering puddles is some solution but it's sad that this world can't fix this problem building real infrastructure and solving this problems permanently.

    • @GrahamBarth
      @GrahamBarth 9 років тому +1

      erroid ...did you even watch the video? You think this only for hipsters? You think people donating money to send these books where they're needed most will cost more than financing clean water infrastructure for... the entire world? Seriously?
      I'm not exactly an economist, but this book costs pennies to make, and supplies one person with drinkable for _four years._ I'm _fairly_ sure that's cheaper than building clean water infrastructure in countries that have none at all.

    • @Madman5150
      @Madman5150 9 років тому +1

      Graham Barth Indeed. The technology is being put out there in its simplest, most portable form right now, and its good news. We have a long way to go, there's no doubt there, but this simple technology can also educate and inspire improvement and growth within the infrastructure itself. I see this as a positive in all regards, and saying its just for hipsters is about as ignorant as one could expect from our happy little band of UA-camrs.

    • @erroid
      @erroid 9 років тому +2

      Graham: and did you ever read my comment? Madman: same here - I naver said it's ONLY FOR hipsters and I also naver said it's for HIPSTERS! I said it is so well printed all hipsters would like to get one. The design is just great and that's all. How did you figure out it is "for hipsters only"?! where is your LOGIC guys?

    • @Menace2Reality
      @Menace2Reality 9 років тому +1

      +erroid Great idea and purpose here. It attempts to educate (if the people using even it have literacy to read the instructions) and attempts to solve a problem. Why use a drinking book when you can hop a boat over the Mediterranean Sea and use a tap. This is an excellent bandaid on a pipe that is slowly bursting at the seams, each leak is a different issue. Realistically this a GENIUS idea and I wish politicians were as innovative the inventor is this is.

    It will be great if this invention is of great use such as distributing them free to those rural area, slums where people are in need. Educating people about the usage is also essential. This will be a saviour to a lot of poor people who do not have the luxury to clean water. Polluted water have always been a problem spreading disease within the slums or poorer community. It shouldn't be commercialize.

    In looking further into the toxicity of silver nitrate, mainly for aquatic life- have you devised a plan of disposing this hazardous material? According to UCLA Center for Laboratory Safety, Silver Nitrate has the potential to cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
If you plan to disperse this book, please consider the effects of what may happen after it is disposed or it could have adverse affects that are much worse than not having drinking water.

    You know, you could also just use concrete Boxes filled with sand to filter the water like it is been naturally done by the groundwater for millennias. The only downside of this method would be that these things are more difficult to transport. This method is probably not much more expensive, doesn't involve chemicals and can be created by the people who need the help themselfes.
    You only need some low grade technology to create such a filter and the advantages of this method are equally as strong. First of all they dont get more dependant than they are now. For once these people would acomplish something on their own, without some rich country sending help that will one day will just expire.
    We do not help those guys by sending them utilities that they dont understand, We make them even more dependant than before.
    Have a nice day,
    Create,

      I think that the concept of the water filter is that it teaches people about the importance of safe water and how to avoid contaminating water. By doing so they are educating the people to become proactive in ensuring safer water in their communities. The way I see it is that the water filters are only a temporary start to safer water as the people who need the filters will learn about water and it's importance and how to sustain safer water within their own communities. When they reach that point they will become less dependent on the filters. I am definitely no expert on water safety and filtering but I am not sure if a sand/rock water filter will get rid of water contaminants such as e coli, cholera and typhoid.

    • @Obsidian-Tux
      @Obsidian-Tux 10 років тому

      Samuel Chan It does get rid of them and these kind of filters are beeing used and constructed by multiple communities in Haiti.
      The effects on the water are great (as far as I know, I am not an expert, but they do tend to improve the overall health over time.)
      As you mentioned the education of the people is very important, as some people even with acces to clean water continue to drink the dirty one as they simply couldn't care less.
      But it is their life and their decision and as long as they live happy with it nobody can interfer.
      I personally think the Biosand filters are the better solution, as they can be produced with low grade technology, by the communities in need themselves. They do need maintenance from time to time, as the sand gets dirty over time, but as mentioned can be effectued by the communities themselves, provided somebody thought them.
      Have a nice day,
      Create.
