Potential storm for North Island on Saturday - will it or won’t it?

  • Low pressure is going to dominate NZ’s weather for weeks ahead by the looks of it, with a storm potentially affecting the north-eastern North Island on Saturday.
The low has the potential to rapidly power up and even reach equivalent power and air pressure to a Category 1 or 2 tropical cyclone. But it’s going to be zipping past by the looks of it - and as we discuss in the video today, severe weather is not yet locked in for the eastern North Island.
Elsewhere more cloud, showers and rain - but large dry and calm areas too, so fog may still be an issue especially with higher humidity.
We have your detailed New Zealand forecast through to Tuesday next week.

I agree about your Niwa comments. I was an Airline Pilot for many years, and were able to get METARS and TAF's for almost every city in the world for free. but NOT New Zealand, unless I paid for it. Greedy NIWA was the cause.

Thanks - we do try to sell! But the Government buys most of the data in NZ so they buy it off themselves and aren't interested in lowering costs, or being more accurate, or having more services for the public. It's just a non-transparent an old boys club making money and/or power for themselves.

NIWA is great - just go the polar opposite to their forecast and you're about spot on! Between their top-heavy burden on the taxpayer, their penchant for importing presenters, their competing with the good old NZ Met Service, and the fact their wings are long overdue for a good clipping (or disbandment) to get them back to their core function as in the DSIR days, won't be a moment too soon. Good on you (and thank goodness!) Phill, for your forecasts

Just found your channel. Clear presentation. Sick and tired of TVNZ weather reports you got a new sub.
The fact that you present alternative EU and US models is not just a good discussion point its bloody good science reporting. Most people are expecting "absolutes" when uncertainty and statistics are key functions in weather modelling. thanks.
Also i loved your snipe at NIWA having worked for them during the late 1990s i couldnt agree with you more. Their corporate inbred arrogance and exceptionalism was overwhelming i didnt last long there. Having started with the DSIR the culture shock and yuppy "science" mentality at NIWA was intolerable.. it kinda felt like i was working for the Gordon Ghecho of NZ science.
The CRI public science institution as handed down from the DSIR was literally thrown in the rubbish bin where peer reviewed high quality science was not the priority .. only profit .. as literally yelled at me once by my boss..
Take everything out of NIWA with suspicion and a grain of salt..

They said this a few years ago and nothing happened here. Niwa is really bad at hyping everything into dramatic stuff. If our winter is warmer than average than surely colder blasts would reset our weather to more normal, rather than out of the ordinary! (even if what is happening around Antarctica isn't normal).
