My father was there. He was not in this area -but was in 3rd Army group. Communications in back of a half track. Probe unit. Not mentioned- not only people trying to kill you but the weather.
blizzards in Ukraine in years. My father felt lucky he could sit off the ground in back of a half track. When the war was ending- commanders said turn these units around and head west. They all knew war was lost and NO ONE would let them get caught by Russians. When you run out of gas start walking. Get rid of your insignias. Get rid of anything you might have that is russian. Stay off roads so you dont get caught by Germans (you'll either be shot or folded back into the fight) Get to the western front. Get caught by the Americans. My father survived. Took me years to get all this info from Wehrmacht military archives. So many stories my father had. But watching these military club stories really brings it home what they had endure.

Indeed these and all who fought in war suffered grievously. Bad enough having swarms of enemies trying to kill you but the snow, cold and mud are trying to kill them, too.

He said most soldiers knew the war was done and head to the west. So he wasnt as scared of getting caught by germans...but you just never knew...certain commanders?...He lived on an onion and a couple potatoes they found on a farm three days.

@@whiplash8277 You are spot on! My father said several times...actually the russians -was more predicatble. At least you had a chance with them. It was everything else trying to kill you. The cold, the equipment, the MUD! Oh the mud- my dad said was not like any other mud! It was a suction thick oatmeal that would pull tall boots right off your feet if you got stuck in it. Equipment- if you see pictures of Wehrmacht boots,, they had steel spikes on their bottom soles. Well...the cold would transfer from the spikes right into your feet. germans were not ready for that kind of winter or the thousand mile long supply trains. It was awful and no way out. No place to go. Cant imagine the desparation on both sides.

@@MilitaryClubHISTORYOne may add to this that winter battles in the Army Group Centre region (Byelorussia) were unsuccessful for the Soviet side. So unsuccessful that a special commission of the GKO ( State Defence Committee - the highest ruling body in the USSR during the war) was organized with the objective of finding out the causes of failure. (By the way, a stark contrast with Hitler's leadership who believed that he and only he knows at the best). The commission did its work, conclusions were made, and all necessary measures. A friend's father, a Hungarian, was in the retreat. It was death to sleep lying down. They had to somehow sleep against a tree or rock. Post-war, he said you only have yourself to rely on. He was contemptuous of authority. He didn't bother gaining a driving license when he came to Australia.

You can't get done for drink or drug driving in Australia if you have never had (this doesn't include driving while disqualified) an Australian driver's licence & drive in Australia. Australian driver's licence is the equivalent of an ID card. You father was correct in assuming the government will always try & keep tabs on you. The computer age, with the advent of digital photo face recognition technology has made this task even easier for governments to keep dossiers on where people have been.

I would too. My take on all this is that the German soldier like the Japanese samurai trained in Bushido code warrior, were the best fighting men at that time with no other previous human that took up that style of greed for the spoils of war! Until the Brits and the all mighty US of A were trained and then properly supplied like the Huns should of done. How stupid to go down in history where 5 or 6 politically motivated Hitler yes men in his circle, never took the most basic suggestions from their top commanders in the field imploring them to act in simple strategy to win the little battles that gain the war!! Everything from Dunkirk to the ME 262. How about defeating Britain 1st then Barbarossa. I thought Napoleon was stupid in the end. WTF! Germany is a war bred country that would never be without Fredrick the great. He rolled over in his grave, I promise you that!

This is pretty good, and at least the voice over actually speaks English well. I've watched a few of these now, It's interesting in the difference between the German services, How someone from the Wermacht talks of the action against someone from the 'Waffen SS' and then someone from one of the 'SS Einsatz Gruppen'. How they speak of and what they think of the Russians and each other. In one, there was an 'SS NCO' who was disgusted with a member of the 'SS Einsatz Gruppen' who boasted how many Poles and Jews he had killed and considered himself as having been in heavy action. The scorn of the 'SS NCO' and another diary of a 'Wermacht NCO' who both were disgusted with this treatment of 'Non Combatants' and considered the 'SS EinSatz Gruppen' soldier as below them or scum for killing unarmed civilians.
Keep up the good work, it's very enlightening to listen to the view of these Germans.

If you don't know a battalion commander is normally a Lieutenant Colonel. Having a Lieutenant in command tells one of the severe attrition in officer ranks. Also, a battalion should have 600 men not 90 or 40. And yet, the Bavarian draft dodger kept the war going another year and a half.

But the Soviet army units were severe understrength, too. Berlin was taken by rifle divisions having 5000 men at best (ordinarily even less: 3000 - 4000 men). And the allotted numbers are more than 10 to 12 thousand men in a rifle division - it varied during the war. But at the end of the war no rifle division had an allotted strength.

To try stop Stalins communist regime which sought to take over Europe. The west made Hitler and enemy for invading Poland, but an Ally out of Stalin also who invaded Poland just 16 days later. The only people that won WW2 along with Stalin and his tiny hat filled government were the arms and vehicle manufacturers who would continue to profit right through the Cold War, and the same “Judea” that declared war in Germany is 1933 and who were given the Palestinians land to form Israel after the war. The rest of us former allies are all losing now that jevvish NGOs have been swamping our lands with mass immigration with the intent to destroy and enslave us all. “We defeated the wrong enemy” - General Patton.

It makes me shudder to think what might have been had a true military strategist like Rommel been in charge.

Rommel was defeated in North Africa and never encountered any campaign remotely similar to the magnitude of events on the eastern front.
