  • today we will read the memoirs of a German tank crewman who fought as an assault gun crew member in the Grossdeutschland division. Non-Commissioned Officer gives us some of his remarkable stories of war survival on the Eastern Front. Reading such recollections, you realize that surviving such a war requires more than just excellent military training - it also depends on a certain luck. His combat experience proves that.

My dad was in Operation Barbarossa in 1941… a Russian sniper got him in the leg, he lost one foot and half of another from gangrene, but was sent home to Emden, where he was bombed daily. Emigrated to the US in 1950.

Glad your grandpa survived the war. Terrible war started by a few greedy politicians. That was on every side at the time, and still occurs today. (I’m American) Great respect for for all the common soldiers during the conflict.

Crazy how it’s always the youth that bear the brunt of the horror and insanity of warfare. My grandparents and relatives fought too one died at 18 as a bomber navigator ... I used to think war heroic ,glamorous too when 20 now I’m 50+ I see the tragedy for what it is I’m grateful there was no major conflict to be involved in. Feel bad for all those serving in the Ukraine/ Russia conflict all because of the evil cynicism of world leaders and politicians

For someone with that length of service his number of kills was rather low?
Although, he was in an assault gun brigade I was under the impression that assault guns were regunned to allow them becoming tank destroyers with higher velocity cannon.
Still, a rather clear insight into a German tankers life on the front.

BS 😁 Soviets produced roughly 3 times more AFV, if you include light tanks. Production figures are on wiki. Likely lose ratio was 2:1 in favor of Germans, later in the war (1944-45) Germans were actually losing more tanks than Soviets. Rest is just post-war German embellishment for gullible Western public.

Una reflexión… el IS3 no llegó a tiempo para combatir en la WWII… ni siquiera en la batalla de Berlín… si estuvo inmediatamente después en los desfiles por la victoria. Seguramente se trataba del IS2.

Only because the West supplied aid to Russia.
Threequarters of their equipment canme from America and UK the only thing Stalin could move to the Urals when Hitler attacked was tank factories.
They are no good without 3 tankers suppling gas.
Also all the artillery trucks planes and infrastructure needed to supply an army.

I think he made a mistake in a diary about those IS3 tanks. Its highly unlikely they faced IS3 in that time - I think those were rather IS2 tanks with 120mm of slopped frontal armor and 100mm all around the turret, AND a 122mm gun (like shown on photo), still very formidable in that time, BUT not as much as IS3. As I remember, IS3 has even thicker armor than 120mm and was produced later on (after the end of war). IS3 is literally impregnable for german guns, even for that longest 88 (KingTiger gun) with its veryyyy sloped divided frontal armor and very thick turret. I am not 100% certain, BUT preety sure SSSR built those after the war. IS2 is much more comparable to german tanks. Yes, 122mm is horrific gun, but has very long reloading time (somewhere about 30 seconds, depends on crew, but still not possible to load it under 25seconds) compared to less than 10 seconds for german 88 (good crew and loader can do it in 8 seconds). Now, I go to check in WT what I said.

The gun points forwards and that's where the heaviest armour is. 😂
But when the enemy is 360° and overhead, even underground, this is pretty useless.
