I was 10 when in 1968 (or 69) my parents bought their first car with seat belts, a Volvo 145S station wagon. My mother took delivery of it in May in Paris during the middle of the severe student riots of the time. She had to drive a brand new car through burning cars, people throwing petrol bombs, police charges and tear gas everywhere. Every time she tried to drive down a street she was stopped by a gendarme who said you can't go that way the students are rioting, eventually she got out with her and the car unscathed, it became one of her list of dinner party stories and was told for many moons afterwards. Volvo was one of the first to introduce seat belts other manufacturers caught up by about 1970.

Lol you crack me up. Love that Jersey NY mentality! I'm from Texas and I lived in NY for a few years and I literally fit in perfectly up there because I have the same mentality about things as most NY and Jersey people. Never really fit in down in Texas for some reason. Enough of that. I'm a few years older than you and when we were kids we used to ride in the back window of the car and just the thought of that by a millennial sends them into cardiac arrest and a mental breakdown swearing your parents abused you as a child. These young adults today would be absolutely horrified if they knew half the shit we were allowed to do as kids. Even telling them that we always were playing outside without our parents well past sundown sends them into a complete mental breakdown lol. But cars (for you millennial gens) cars used to have a dashboard under the rear window and there was enough space for a kid or two to lay there and ponder the mystery of life and think about what we were so going to do when we became adults. It was a highly covenant spot to be while on a out of town trip. There's been great negotiations and deals made for the spot between siblings. Bribery was a big thing to. I'm going to tell Mom and Dad about so n so if you don't let me have that window seat 🙃. That was always used as last resort tactic from younger siblings. Seat belts? Lol. Yeah there were no seat belts for the back window and look most of us survived against all odds. I had a real nice Buick when I lived in Upstate NY and out on a weekend drive through deserted parts of the Adirondack mountains I let my daughter experience the beloved spot of the back window. This was early 2000s and yes people would have clutched their pearls had they seen that but you gotta live a little while you're here. But she survived and absolutely loved being in the back window that one time. Keep your skirt on millennials she survived her childhood and lives in Massachusetts now being her best self

Imagine that today and every parent turns into the world's biggest Karen. And then cries "my baby never does anything wrong!" Yeah and what's wrong with kids today? Not enough boots up the backside when they totally screw up. Now they get called victim and get a $500. Gaming console. America is truly fucked up and just fucked in general lol. I don't understand why people badger you about a damn lap belt? Please explain to me why someone doesn't understand this was an era where people were more concerned with what was under the hood. I know for a fact my Dad's 73 trans am originally did not have shoulder belts because if you got into a severe accident, it was easier for the medics to cut the belt to get you out versus having to worry about your throat. I grew up in a time of the late eighties to early nineties where some cars had shoulder belts but others didn't because again, lap belts are easier to deal with and don't lock up like shoulder belts do.

I remember that my parents had a 72 Pontiac safari wagon and some ignoranus inspector said it had to have seat belts to pass so he convinced them to purchase the belts from him and have them installed. He drilled holes into what he said was a solid part to hold them. He only required them for the front seat but not the middle seat nor the backwards facing third row seat. About a year later was in an accident and that secure mounting tore right out of the floor when got hit from the front. And we were only going about five to ten mph. That was the end of that car. We replaced it with a 69 Ford wagon with dual facing third row seats. There were belts for two outside seats on front and 2nd row seats but not for the person sitting in the center position and only two of the seats in "dfrs" so only six of "ten" seating positions. DFRS was what was supposed to accommodate four people with legs mashed together in a space that was do uncomfortable wondered what genius engineer at Ford thought up this design. By the way "DFRS" was dual facing rear seats. This was supposedly a design making it a "ten" passenger station wagon. The outside seating positions of front and middle row seats had shoulder belts that you could clip into the seatbelt or were folded and placed into a wire hanger along the edges of the ceiling but if you didn't want to have it cutting into your neck. You also need to remember that the dashboard of this car was steel and not covered in padding like cars of today. No airbags or anything that might even be considered soft if you were involved in an accident except your head as you were sent forward. Also the center seat positions could fly right up and out the windshield since there was no restraining device for these. We then replaced that car with a 72 Pontiac wagon that now had the third row facing forward but as previous wagons no restraint for center position of any of the rows of seats except the front row now had integrated shoulder restraints in front row seats only. Middle and third row seats were attached with center position now had a seatbelt only. Still would like to see one of these cars try to get a DOT inspection today and have pass without some "KAREN" inspector try to have you modify something to meet current standards. Only reason I say this is that a friend of mine just tried to have his 1970 car inspected and was failed until he had padding installed on the dashboard. Yep he's still trying to have it inspected by two other inspection stations but since it was failed for no proper padding on the dash, those inspection stations it gets failed by them as the last inspector said since it was identified as a discrepancy he can't have another inspection station pass it. Now whomever has intelligent brain matter needs to train someone to use their noodle and think before they just rubber stamp "FAIL". Alright now if you've got a single functioning brain cell step to the front of the class.😂

Was driving one day and the air bags deployed and caused serious damages to her face and she had to get face surgery. She sued and won allot of $$$$$ the dealership was shutdown. And she had to quit her job cause pics of her was floating around at the school where she teached. After the face surgery she went back and the kids apologized to her. When there parents heard the parents pulled there kids outta sports baseball and basketball and football. And taught them a lesson. The school superintendent stated what happened if that was u kids. The kids went silent after that. All of my vehicles are old. I have a 1970 Chevelle Malibu and it has a lapbelt. It has a racing harness that I can easy remove if I ain't drag racing. And my 1969 Chevy Nova just has a lapbelt. But officers stated I can have a shoulder strap customed made. Nope they can't do anything. They have t goes to court judges dropped the charge's. When they do the officers are not happy.

I've never done boats on that type if trailer. Those trailers can haul many regular sized boats on boat trailers similar to a car carrier. Also haul single large yachts. Gentry & Sons has the same type trailer. He hsuls lots of boats.

Seatbelts were not required in vehicles until 1967 and trucks until 1971...at this time they were federally mandated to be standard equipment in all vehicles...states implemented mandatory use at different dates as time went on...to keep federal highway funds like the 55mph speed limit....these laws could not be forced upon the states but they would lose federal highway funding if they did not comply...

My first real car was a '68 Volvo 122S with separate lap and shoulder belts. Fasten the lap belt first, then clip the shoulder belt in and adjust both separately. Done right, one did NOT move around much on a rough road, and Lord knows we had plenty of those.

You still have to keep the axle weights legal with a permit. With the spread axle you can go to 40,000 on the trailer, 34,000 on the drives and 12,000 on the steer which would be 86,000. You need the permit to exceed 80,000.

No, don't put your hands in front of you. You can get broken limbs or burns on your hands if you leave your hands on the steering wheel. The professional driver who constantly crashes vehicles for a research company always puts his arms out like a scarecrow before the impact. Pretty much straight out to the left and right.
13:04 Yes, but most cabover sleepers actually have a belt to keep you in the bed in case you are team driving.

Why do people even give a shit about seatbelts. Sounds like they're trying to sound more "in touch" than the rest of us. They just need to worry about themselves.

New York and New Jersey are some of the worst, most oblivious drivers on the face of the earth. You absolutely need the patience and tranquility of a monk to navigate the roads of those states. Whether you’re driving four wheels or eighteen.

reminds me of stories from people who own old truck and get pulled over for not were seat belt but ether have a lap only belt or none at all 50-60 i believe. then the cop comes up with you have to have install a 3 point or one to b legal. if i had the money or didnt live in a rust belt state i'd love to daily a older truck without a seat belt or lap belt, would make you think be for driving stupid and be attentive to surroundings
