I started my Rhubarb back in 2007. I have also collected the seed and replanted them the next spring, twice. I needed more Rhubarb plants as I give most away and my wife gets mad at me. So I'm in the process of starting more seeds this spring and doing a little refresher course on UA-cam. Thanks for the video !
Thank you! I’m only on the second year of this plant. You arn’t supposed to really harvest much from it until the third year. You can tell he is still small. So I might get a stalk or two off of him this year but next year will be the big one 🤗
Thanks for doing this Video - Growing Rhubarb here in South Africa - KZN Coast. Its our first attempt at growing these, and your info is very helpful. Cheers.
Thanks for posting! This is my 2nd year with rhubarb that I grew from seed. I had no idea what was happening with the broccoli looking growth. Unfortunately I let it go to seed and it is so pretty but I’d rather be able to harvest so gonna go do some cutting. I hope it doesn’t leave it open to infection. May have to wait one more year to harvest? I’ve heard it takes 3 years….maybe that’s only if it’s grown from seed.
Waiting 3 years would be safe for sure. I made sure not to harvest the first year and the second I think I old harvested enough to make one strawberry rhubarb pie and that was it. By year three you should be good to go!
Actually I want them to bolt. I'm in zone 9-10 and I was watching a video claiming that it's possible to grow rhubarb as an annual in warm area. I'm pretty sure my area is gonna kill a rhubarb its first year as we average 90°F by May and over 100°F on July/August. I've been searching info on how to grow it as an annual but very little is said about it. Reading the comments on your video, I'm for the first time hopeful I might be able to get seeds from 1 year old plants.
Why doesn’t anyone want the seeds, so that you can plant more rhubarb, and have thousands so you will not have to worry about having enough ? No ones answered this in their videos.
I already have enough. Also, when you let the plant go to seed, it puts all of its energy into producing the seed and less into the edible stalks. This may mean you don’t get as much of the edible parts.
@@GrantedGardens thanks! I’d love to have more, and I just planted it last year, so I shouldn’t harvest it this year anyway. Rhubarb is expensive if you want to buy it, I’m thinking home nursery, maybe. It takes me 6 hours and a couple days to mow, so I’m thinking more food, less grass!

I would love to have so many more! Maybe next year we will add!
I hope your rhubarb harvest is huge this year. So much pie envy!!

South Africa! Wow that’s awesome thank you for watching!
Thanks. We planted two last year and both are putting up seed pods.
Easy fix! Good luck!
Well you send them this way, of course 😀😀

I’ve had rhubarb for over 6 years it’s never flowered
How did you know it was a 'him'?😃
🤪 just a guess
Can you eat the stalk where it bolted?
The stalk was very green. Usually you would want the edible stalks to be red
They are also usually hollow so not really edible.
I’m sure it’s a ‘her’ 😂
Don not cut you twist
