Mal Waldron is totally underrated!! Been listening to him all evening and the scope of his work is so vast, it's makes sense that this homage to Satie came from his early training in classical piano, but as someone here said, everything he played he made his own.

Besides Paul Bley, Mal is the only other pianist to feel Satie's vibe.

Agatha ... if you haven't, listen to French Story by Barnie Wilen and Mal Waldron Trio.

@hanpasado as Mal Waldron playing got nottin to do with your personal sight on classical music, I wonder how far it got to do with Eric Saties personal view on music classically - as you classically expect Satie´s music to be done a certain (kind of) way, you might be avoiding to follow another perspective of another classical studied, jazz experienced, free musician who might deeply know about Monsieur Satie* and so express his experienced personal view on a rich spirit…

Mal always sounded like Mal - whatever he touched he made it his own.

@hanpasado …like Eric Satie is called to be.
    * afaik; otherwise Mal wouldn´t be playing his songs like this
So, I dont agree too much to your oppinion - and feel to know much more about Mr. Satie than I would maybe get to know by listining to classically "played" classical music, like you seem to do.

Having nothing to do with Satie does not by definition make it 'horrible'. Jazz is improvisation, classical music isn't. That's what differentiates the two. You cannot criticize music simply because it is performed in the style of jazz and not classical. That is an elitist comment.

Kevin Gallaugher kinda, classical had improvisation back then, and satie is at the boundary of classic and modern. Jazz is here to stay and so is classic

@hanpasado apropos Eric Satie was godfather of pop-music.

  • @hanpasado

Horrible, this has got nothing to do with Satie. I always thought the habit of jazzing up (in a crappy way) classical music had died out in the end of the 1970s...

It's great that you're elitist and all, but the Music Snob Club thinks you're an idiot for referring to Erik Satie as "classical music".
