  • In this video, I compared the lightweight yet sharp Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF and the Nikon 600mm f/4 based on their autofocus speed, sharpness, weight, etc. after travelling with both lenses to photography in Kenya, India, Alaska, etc.

I only ever use tripod if stationary for long period, like in a hide. Out in the field I much prefer to hand hold as that gives me much more freedom to move and pan quickly for flying birds or quick action.

Well said. Yes quick action much better without tripod. Would love to go to a hide sometime.

I enjoyed your video today comparing 500 pf to 600 f4. Ive been using 200-400 f4 for 4-5 yrs and just now purchased the 500 pf. I shoot college sports and will enjoy the lighter weight and portability of the 500 pf.

I eventually will end up getting the PF 5.6 if I don't buy an F4 first. I use the 200-500mm and working on my technique. I'm really happy with some images where I've put a lot of work in getting a good composition and background.
Your fumbling experience is hilarious but I'm no stranger to it and that's with a the cheaper lens. I'm seeing this video almost one year later to you publishing and it does make some great points. I think I should rent these lenses and see how I do.
Thank you for the valuable insights.

The size difference of the two lenses is hilarious 😂 BTW, I can relate to what you said about hiking with too much equipment. Besides my camera gear I also have to carry water and toys for my dog 😜 In the end I opted for less camera gear. Only one lens must do.

Great tutorial. Try using manual focus with the 500mm and teleconverter - you will be surprised how quickly you can get the focus right.

I enjoyed your video and like you often feel like a pack mule lugging my equipment around. That being said, I am currently using a Nikon 200-500 mm lens with a Nikon D500 with battery grip. I am at that point of my photography where I am strongly leaning toward my first prime lens purchase. You mentioned using a video review of the 400 mm f/2.8 but I am not sure which of your videos contains that gear review?

I just subscribed. Thank you for an entertaining and enthusiastic discussion concerning the Nikon 500mm PF 5.6. My 500 PF arrives in three days and I will be shooting with it my D500 which is also new to me. I have been using the Tamron 100-400 and frankly I think it has performed quite well for an inexpensive lens but the Nikon 500 5.6 PF in truly going to be an adventure. I am not new to photography but BIF & wildlife are a new experience and very challenging. At 75 I might be a little late to the hobby but I’m diving in. Using a prime lens rather than a zoom is going to be my biggest challenge I think. Any tips on visually acquiring the subject with this lens would be appreciated. I live on the east coast of Florida on a large lagoon so I have a great variety of wildlife to serve as subjects. Thanks again for the video.

    Hey!
I just found your channel and your work, which is just amazing.
Have a technical question for you. Currently I am using a D500 with a 300mm F4 PF and where I live critters are pretty shy.
Therefore I am planning on buying my first "exotic" telephoto prime.
My first choice would be a used 300mm F2.8 VR2 plus a 1.4TC. This should give me the flexibility +1stop light advantage. I am not sure if the sharpness would be great with the TC on, moreover since I have a 300mm F4 PF I am hesitant about if this decision would be wise.
Second option would be a 500mm F4 FL which is almost the same weight as the 300mm but the 200mm extra reach would make a huge difference for sure, not mention the sharpness.
My concern is the price tho.
Used 300mm F2.8 is roughly 3500-4000 euros here in Europe, meanwhile the 500mm F4 will set me back with a whopping 7-8 grand.
What is your take on the topic?

    • @MM-zd6wf
      @MM-zd6wf 3 роки тому

You can buy used 300mm 2,8 in very good shape for 1600-2300€.

I can't help but be jealous of the amazing image quality and buttery-smooth backgrounds of a 600mm f4 lens. However, my band account and back are big fans of anything a lot less expensive and much lighter. I can't help but wonder if it would be possible for a camera manufacturer to create a digital filter that would defocus the backgrounds of cameras using slower lenses or smaller sensors. As I understand it the Sony RX10 (4) has a "painting effect" filter. Who knows? In enjoyed your video.

I just heard you lecture your workshop attendees that you were the only one taking photos in low light because you had the 400mm f/2.8 (Sony or Canon) because the zooms (200-600, 100-500) weren't able to focus in low light (i.e. 500mm f/5.6). So when push comes to shove (now with mirrorless), which lens are you reaching for in low light (i.e. the larger telephotos with wider apertures, or much lighter lenses)? - you answered the question toward the end - so hike in good light and bring your jeep/tripod/heavy lens if in low light.

Get the D500 for wildlife. Buffer is insane. 99% of D850 shots get cropped anyways and it produces so much data. Also the D850 + battery grip only has 9fps (vs 10 fps) and with the grip, D5 battery and charger you almost pay four times the amount you would pay for the D500. D500 is awesome.
