  • I took my prior 555 timer circuit and hooked up a speaker to synthesize some less-than-pleasing sounds!
The basic 555 circuit was first built in an earlier video ( • My first 555 timer cir... ) and I think it was modified during the counter series (part 1: • Upgrading the counter ... ) although I can't quite remember for sure.

    Thoroughly enjoying the intuitive approach!

I would highly recommend picking up a hs senior oriented book about ac, I'm currently studying in a technical vocational high school in Greece and the book provided by the ministry is very thorough on both ac and DC.

If you have a second 555 you can make a neat police/emergency siren.

You're right, capacitor is there to cut DC bias from signal an will pass current only when the voltage on the input changes. It'll be just spikes so it sounds cleaner. Square wave contains all sort of frequencies.
DC bias basically makes a heater of the coil and increases power consumption altogether.
Depending on the value it also cuts some high frequencies, use something like 10 or 100uF or for audio.
You might want to look into integrator circuit on op-amp for making the square wave on the output into a bit nicer sounding triangle or maybe just rc filter integrator and an amplifier/buffer for sine-ish one.
With just 555 you can get triangle-ish waveform out of timing capacitor leads but that'd require extra op-amp to prevent adding extra load to it and effectively discharging the capacitor faster.
You can also play with pin 5 now, for example attaching resistor divider with potentiometer there. Or another 555 output. Or photoresistor for a pseudo theremin. Or perhaps even microphone to make it into an alien vocoder ;-)

      Nice, thank you.

I'm sure you will research what you feel you need. You are on the right track for the shape of the wave being part of the "quality" of the sound. That particular attribute is called the "Envelope". To say much more, I would be pulling facts out of the air, so I'll leave it to you to take the direction you want. Great video, thanks, Take care Mr. Zaphod.🎵🎶

Isn't an envelope about the amplitudes, starting the sound at 0 then up to the max volume then going back down to 0 for the end of the tone? I think he should start with generating a sine wave and then overlaying a few slightly different frequencies on each other to make it sound more natural

@@0x0michael I think you are correct.

Ya need a sine wave dawg

Then overlay multiple waves on each other to sound more natural

Yes, but why not have the politeness to call the bloke by his name? Instead of ‘dawg’, whatever that is supposed to mean.

I wonder if a speaker requires NRZ (non-return to zero) bits. Because you're only feeding it a half wave with 555 out (I think).
Still, this is a neat use for all of this.

But I think that's mostly used for data transmission.
I'm not exactly sure wave type is the issue either. Still, very neat. Can't wait to see ya play around with these circuits more.

It's already an instrument - what you've built there is a (very) basic 1 channel modular synthesiser en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_synthesizer
