What’s up guys, welcome back to Dame Untamed. For those of you who are new here, my name is Nikki and this is my adventure channel.
Today, I’m showcasing a recent layover I had in beautiful Lihue, Hawaii! We are going to talk about things to do in Kauai, Hawaii. This was the first time I’d ever been to the island of Kauai as a flight attendant vlogger and was very grateful for a quick glimpse of beach life, especially during the cold/ wet Canadian winters here in British Columbia. Hard to believe this island was one of the Jurassic Park filming locations!!
This sunny layover came at the end of a 5 day pairing. For those of you who don’t know, a pairing is a grouping of flights over the span of 1-5 days away from your home base (which for me, is YVR in Vancouver). I spent 2 nights flying to/ from and laying over in Edmonton before operating a flight to LIH from YVR which was 6.5 hours. It was a long 12 hour day, but was all worth it when we landed on beautiful Kauai.
Nicknamed the Garden Isle due to much of its landscape being coated in lush rainforest, Kauai is a tropical paradise. Radiant sunsets, turquoise waters and untouched beaches are just a few of the reasons people are so drawn to it. Not to mention being the incredible backdrop for the Jurassic Park films. Who could forget these iconic scenes?
Time to check out Kalapaki beach and the surrounding areas! It was HOT but I was determined to walk around and explore before relaxing. I walked along the west side of the beach to the cruise ship port. Luckily no boats were in while I was there. I did however, run in to a few of Kauai’s wild chickens. It’s rumoured that the rural chicken population was let loose after a big hurricane back in 1992. Hey’ve since become a predominant part of the local wildlife.
While exploring the East side of the beach, I found an incredible spot. The Kuki’i Point Lighthouse, which has spectacular views of the Ninini Point Lighthouse and the surrounding waters.
Unfortunately, as beautiful and scenic as Kalapaki Beach is, it isn’t home to a coral reef, so feel free to leave your mask and snorkel behind. However, a few weeks prior to this layover, I also had a layover in Kona, on the Big Island. I had some pretty sweet encounters - take a look!
About an hour into my underwater adventure, this guy showed up! I was thrilled to see him. After cruising along with him for a few minutes, his buddy joined us. A sea turtle double whammy just for me. I came across a cute little saddleback wrasse eating algae off the sea turtles shell. In nature, this is called a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship. A beneficial relationship exists between two organisms; the wrasse has found food and the turtles shell stays clean!
I also found a very venomous devil scorpionish. These fish are masters of disguise and come equipped with venomous spines lining their back. This sneaky fish is a perfect example of why you should avoid touching things when exploring the ocean floor.

Having spent time in Hawaii both for work and on holidays I can easily pick Kauai as my favorite of the Islands. They're all fantastic - and I'm glad you got to enjoy Kona because it sort of flies under the radar, yet offers so much beauty - but Kauai would be my immediate first choice to return to. If you get a chance go kayaking on the Wailua River, and hiking around areas like Waimea Canyon were also incredible. Hopefully you missed the crazy weather delays at YVR during the holidays!
I definitely can understand why Kauai would be your favourite. I had only ever been to the big island before this trip, but absolutely loved it. Hoping to head back to Kauai when I actually have time to explore further. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll definitely put them in my pocket for when I return 😌👌🏼. As for the crazy delays at YVR - luckily I wasn’t affected too badly.
