Hi! I recently changed the switch because it didn’t work anymore. I ran a diagnosis on saw clearly on it that I need a new switch. After some days (after replacing) my car didn’t want to start anymore. I have no error on dash, no error on tester but I can’t see P or N on dashboard. Only D R and S. Any idea ?
Great video. I have a 2002 330i the issue is when i move the shifter to D in the dashboard does not show it and it does not drive neither, i have to hold it to show the D so i can drive. You think that it may be the same sensor. Any suggestions. Thank you
Yes it could be, but try adjusting where the lever and tip of the cable meet like in 1:25 so that it is pulling on the lever more when you put it on D.

Got home let it cool down drove it around the block & just wouldn’t move at all anymore nun of the gears are doing anything & have the same warnings popping up on my dash could it be smiler problem?
Hello sir ! Great video ! I’ve got a 325i 2002 gear box woorks well , except when i sellect R, then it trows error on dash and get into limp mod ! If i put in P , turn off 5-10 sec start again is fine ! Gearbox changes well , sport mode , manual mode ! Everything fine , sometimes when i put in R has this problem ! Do you believe your fix will sort out my problem ? Thanks a lot
How about when you start in neutral then go to R or D, does it still go to limp mode? It might very well be this range switch.. but i also suggest to read the error code with a scanner.
Is it all still working. Mines does not go into Sport mode or Steptronic mode. But all other gears drive perfectly fine and no error codes. Same 530i M54
@@omdcarsandairplanes just awaiting the inpa software. As I think the snapon one is not good enough to read the codes. But so far I've changed the gear lever and transmission switch but still no luck
@@shagbabyyeah yep it was the surround the section which shows PRND that surround as under it is a module with a halogen bulb which acts as a circyit. Got that 2nd hand and all working
I have similar problem with audi a6 c5. It has zf 5hp19 gearbox. Now on colder days it won t go in reverse, then it goes into limp mode and don t put it in gear smoothly
i just got an e39 523i and my transmission started to go in limb mode when i start the car in park and shift to R and N and as soon as it hits R or N the limb mode comes on. i turn off the car and start in N and put to D and no limb mode. but when i have been drving for awile (from work to home) and as i arrive to my home and put D to N and all the way to P, there is no limb mode. and when the limb mode comes on the car allways shifts the gear harder than usually, its a harder hitting shift. the limb mode comes only when i start my car (and let it warm up for a little bit) and when im a about to start driving. only then so im asking if any one has had this problem and is it because of the range switch?
@@omdcarsandairplanes i can see the gears when i start from P and when i put it from R to N the the dashboard loses the PRND12345 and the limb mode comes on. to add to this, today i took off the sencor but i could not get it open so i just cleaned the outside and put it back on. after that it did not show it again. even when i left the second i started the car and did not wait for it to warm up. i just got strait home and we will see if it comes on again tomorrow when i have time to test it more but for to day it worked with no problems. and tomorrow i will get the codes checkd I can keep this comment going and tell if i find the problem or fix it for anyone else thats having the same kind of promlems
(promblem solved and solution) we checked the codes and i think it was for the sencor or something like that. but there has not been any lights or limb mode since we tried to open the sensor and failed. we just put it back on the car and that seems to has done it.
i have a e39 540I and i have the same error but for some reson it goes gear 1 then revs up to 3000 rpm then jumps to 3rd and then 2 gear. im going to change the gearbox oil and filter and hope for the best. if enyone knows how to fix it, please help. And in Tiptronic all the gears works smoth so i don't know what to do.
Nice video! Have a project car and it was not starting and looking under the car there is a torn wire or two at that switch from something impacting/destroying it at the harness. Time to break out the solder gun and do a bit of wiring work. 2001 740i, no crank, no start and the range selector does not move on the dash, just clicks in the top three positions as you move the shifter from park on down and no clicks from neutral to the lowest gear. New battery and the EWS is aligned properly. Until your video it had me stumped!
Very intermittent on mine and seems to be at least related to battery condition/state of charge. It always happens when the car has not been used for a few days.

Well it's pretty straightforward, just prepare your tools first and just get at it.. i hope this solves your problem.

Yes all is working. Try scanning the transmission computer for error codes.

Yes, when it's in limp mode it goes in gear harshly. Have it scanned for codes first.

Does the gear indicator show when you start from P? I would suggest to have it scanned for codes first.

After you sanded with sandpaper you use dielectric grease or different?
