    Much of the messaging from authorities around Covid-19 booster shots has been confusing - and that’s partly because scientists themselves haven’t always agreed on who needs them. When many countries began to recommend boosters not just for the older and high-risk, but for all adults, they were essentially taking sides in a still-unresolved debate around that question: Why give an extra dose to healthy adults who are still very protected against severe Covid-19 cases from their original dose?
    But since the omicron variant has emerged, many have changed their minds. To understand why, we talked to one formerly skeptical expert who scheduled her own booster shot based on what she learned about omicron. We spoke to her about what happens in your immune system when you get that third (or second) shot, and why it could be especially useful in stopping the spread of omicron.

    Instead of countries like the UK, Israel and the US getting booster shots for all adults, would it not be more effective on a global level to give these doses to countries like Botswana etc where new varients have appeared because case rates are high and vaccination coverage low. By the way scientists/doctors changing their minds are a good thing. We all make decisions based on information available at the time. But things change rapidly in this pandemic, and new evidence are presented all the time. So doctors updating their stance and views are absolutely a good thing (and essential) when dealing with this pandemic.

      Yes. I just wish she’d spoken with the scientists who made the booster extension BEFORE blurting out that not everybody needs a booster. In this case, there was evidence the decision makers had, that weighted things against the norm. She should’ve spoken with them first, to avoid giving out outdated advice. Not helpful even though she now knows better. Her advice might’ve cost some who listened to her initial advice, highly.

      You know, as a physics student focusing on theoretical physics when I ran out of Greek letters to use I either
      - Use other symbols.
      - Add something to the existing Greek letters, like a hat, a bar, a dot, a number, anything that will make it different.
      - Combine 2 Greek letters for 1 symbol.
      - Or make a scribble that I can easily remake.
      So I believe the scientists can use similar or other naming system for all of the variants.

The naming of the variants isn't just for the sake of scientists (they already have a system using letters and numbers) but it's for reporting and governments. Adding a symbol that can't be pronounced would compromise those traits.

      The argument is that by getting another vaccine dose, you'll increase the antibody level for a period, which will be a more effective protection against the omicron variant and covid in general. This is a known effect found in all vaccinations to viral infections where the antibody level increase after inoculation, then decreasing for some time until reaching an equilibrium. Then with the next infection memory cells will react quicker to produce antibodies. Essentially, what we want is to increase the antibody level to prevent hospitalizations (either by less effective spread or just better initial protection preventing strong adverse effects from the virus), because a large increase in patients to the hospitals will lead to an increase in deaths, because there is a fixed amount of personnel to care for the very sick covid patients.

      @michaelg1778 2 роки тому +18

      It makes perfect sense.
      If you don't get a booster, your body has fewer antibodies over time and depends on the B cells to produce antibodies when it detects the virus. So if you get the omicron variant in your system and the B cells don't detect it, they won't produce additional antibodies and you'll be more susceptible to the virus.
      If you do get a booster, the amount of antibodies in your system is automatically higher. This way, if the omicron variant enters your system, even if the B cells fail to recognize it, your body already has a higher level of antibodies to protect you.

But then again, covid doesn't cause severe disease for vaccinated people anywhere near what it was for unvaccinated. So you would think that would be the "end condition", but now they're pushing boosters which have very little impact on severe disease reduction for most of the population so obviously that's not the case.
      The only way I see it "ending" is 1 of 2 ways;

      Yes, because anti-vaxxers let it become endemic. There was an opportunity for us to probably wipe it out (not entirely, but in the way we did, say, bird flu), but because so many people on the right side of the political spectrum underplayed COVID and fear-mongered the vaccine, we missed that window. So COVID is endemic now, and we're likely to stay that way for a long time.

In Germany we fear that the doses expire because there aren’t enough people that get vaccinated, while there are countries that didn’t even have the chance to give the first shot to a majority of their people. It is hard though because at the same time I wish that more people in my country would get vaccinated, so I can live a normal life again without fear and restrictions, but that also comes to the expense of other peoples health.

    Vox does a good job with these videos. This isn't sensationalizing or overstating what vaccines/boosters do. However, color me a cynical skeptic, but the fact that Dr. Gounder's a member of the COVID-19 Advisory Panel leads me to wonder how much of a role the pharmaceuticals play in her suggestions. And I'm not even suggesting something underhanded; the simple fact that Big Pharma is certainly in close contact (no pun intended) with the Panel increases the probability that they have influence or sway, whether intentional or not. For instance, Dr. Gounder could have very easily made the case that Omicron is a more contagious but less severe variant, suggesting that we are headed towards a mild endemic disease. Doesn't the current evidence from Omicron suggest that scenario is as likely as getting continual boosters? Thanks.

    has received the fifth dose, the restrictions can be relaxed as the
    sixth dose stops the virus from spreading. I am confident that the

    the antibodies remain stable after the tenth dose. The eleventh dose
    will insure that no new mutations will develop, so there is no longer

      current clinical trials from pfizer only investigate markers of antibodies, they are using preliminary data to skew their points into promoting the booster because it will naturally profit them to sell it, sure, it's marketing but it has also a scientific basis, does that mean being young and double vaccinated is ineffective against omicron? uh i dont think so because pfizer's trials have not looked at T-cell and B-cell activation very well or have a good sample for healthy aged (non-elderly/at-risk) people will react to an omicron exposure with two regular vaccines, what i believe is that the omicron variant's high transmissibility and low severity (early, preliminary just like pfizer's trials), will cause the populate to achieve herd immunity through a good combination of vaccination and testing policy.

    • @fairlyfactual451

      @@Lilly-hk6qn That depends on a number of factors. The most prominent of which is the longevity of antibodies produced from infection. COVID generally has been known to have shorter-lived antibodies than other diseases such as smallpox where second infections are very rare in a lifetime. As a result, for that disease, achieving herd immunity was trivial; simply vaccinate enough of the population at some point in their lives and the disease will not be able to sustain itself anymore and dies out. On the other hand with COVID's omicron variant, if antibodies from infection last 3-5 months like the original strain of COVID, then herd immunity would only be possible if enough of the population was either vaccinated (7+ months of immunity for Pfizer) or infected (3-5 months immunity on average). Presently, neither vaccination nor infection rates are high enough to achieve herd immunity in the United States. Moreover, if herd immunity was achieved here, it is possible it would not last indefinitely unless the rest of the world could achieve it at the same time as well.
