  • Hey there, folks! It's Phil Beckwith, The Professional Painter and Decorator, and I'm here to talk about my latest flat renovation project. As you might know, paint can be pretty pricey, so I'm always on the lookout for ways to save some cash. That's why I'm using up some spare paint I have lying around for this project. I mean, why buy more paint when you've got some just sitting there, right?
Now, let's talk about Tikkurila Optiva 5. This is some premium paint, folks. It's like the champagne of paint. And let me tell you, I'm not just saying that because I'm waiting for Porsche to get in touch for me to test out a 911. (Cough, cough.) No, I'm saying it because it's true. This stuff is the real deal.
As for brushes and rollers, I like to get a little creative. I mean, anyone can use a regular old brush or roller, but where's the fun in that? I personally like to use a cat's tongue brush and a fluffy bunny roller. I mean, why not, right? And who knows, maybe it'll catch on and become the latest trend in painting tools. You heard it here first, folks.
But seriously, the most important thing is to use whatever works best for you. Whether it's a synthetic brush or a natural bristle brush or even your hands (okay, maybe not your hands, use a sock at least - you've seen a TicTok video of that I'm sure), as long as it gets the job done right, that's all that matters.
So if you want to see some pro-level painting in action, check out my UA-cam channel. And who knows, maybe one day I'll be test-driving that Porsche 911. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

I use Optiva 5 regularly with my customers too. It’s actually cheaper for me than the Dulux or Johnstones scrubbable paints with the discounts I have and Tikkurilla do free courier delivery for trade customers which is convenient (order before 2pm and it usually turns up the next day). I suggest more durable paint for high traffic areas like hallways and some customers like to use it everywhere.

You say cheaper for cheaper clients it's not that much dearer when you think about it, when doing quotes explain to your clients why you use certain paints etcs, get some knowledge, my main point is why have a pro decorator in and use cheap matieirals? Pay once and make it last saving money in the long run, I've been back to jobs 3 years later and it still looks fresh (depending on home etc....)

Hi Phil, I’ve had some great results with Tikkurila Optiva 5, it’s my preference for high traffic areas. However I had a recent issue with a light colour match that was way off, however customer support from Tikkurila was rubbish which has put me off using this on large jobs.

in recent year the improvement in WB paints.... new brands coming to the uk are giving the 'known uk brands' a run for their money.
