  • There's a pitched war of words over a plan to downsize troops at two U.S. Army bases on Oahu, Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter. The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii is leading the charge for those opposed to the cuts, citing an enormous impact to Hawaii's economy in both revenues and in military/civilian jobs. Those in favor of the downsizing believe it will relieve some of Hawaii's traffic and housing woes. Malia Mattoch moderates this discussion.

They should all leave. Rescind statehood and have a ten year window for all non-natives to leave. Let Hawaiians have their own government and monetary systems. Ban tourism from the U.S. Others will show up, likely from Asia.

@@zonansg4212 It's what the native population wants - NO MORE HAOLIES. Give them the nation back with ZERO participation or interference from outsiders.

If Hawaii does what you've stated then the state will be objectively worse off than it is now. Even if you did manage to secede without a protracted and costly split from the mainland, what will your "own money" be worth on the world stage when it's based on such a weak economy? You guys have two things going for you economically as far as I'm concerned: agriculture and tourism. You have the climate for agriculture, but not enough space to produce a competetive level of output to build an export market comparable with most Midwestern US states, let alone other countries. You'd still have tourism, but would exclude the biggest, and also closest, economy in the world from participating. Sure, maybe China will compensate for that loss a little bit, but only until they default on the debt from all those rapidly constructed railways and the huge housing bubble that's propping up their economy pops. Once that happens their citizens won't be able to afford to travel anymore and the supply of tourist cash dries up. Japan won't give you as many tourists either, and no one further East is going to fly there regularly when they could just go to Ibiza or somewhere else in the Mediterranean. Even if they did, you're right back where you started with relying on the tourism you seem to hate so much. The various sciences, particularly astronomy, have made attempts to establish research facilities such as telescopes on Hawaiian land that could have brought good-paying, sustainable STEM jobs. Nope, every time that happens you guys chase them off because you don't want them bulding on what usually turns out to be ancestral lands. Then again, is your education system even good enough to reliably produce students that could succeed in those jobs? If it was then perhaps more homegrown STEM businesses would have popped up by now. Other than what I've mentioned, what else is there for you to build wealth on and function as an independent nation that couldn't already be achieved with your current status as a US state? Or is all of that worth it just so you don't have to look at another haole again? You're advocating for de facto cultural and economic isolationism. No amount of wanting to go back to the old ways is going to absolve Hawaii of the fact that economic participation on the world stage is mandatory for self determination as a nation in this era, at least if you want a decent standard of living for your people.

@@troys3757 It's what the core of natives want. China would be an excellent trade partner for Hawaii.

I get why the Natives want it but it would be an incredibly shortsighted decision. You didn't address anything I said, and it seems that no one else that shares your views wants to do so, either.
China already trades with the US so I don't see your point. What would Hawaii alone have to offer the Chinese other than real estate?
