Deliverance is timeless. Unique scenario; well cast; nothing phony; credible; this story is not dated; well-written by James Dickey & well-crafted by John Boorman. Bravo to all cast, crew, writer and director. Cinematic perfection.
John Voight’s character in Deliverance and Charlie Sheen’s character in Platoon essentially go through the same type of character transformation. Boy to man. Forged by hardship and making tough decisions.
A classic and disturbing movie. The actors doing their own stunts brings a palpable reality to the film. No suspension of disbelief here, just the raw essence of survival against deviant circumstances.
I would have been truly honored to have had Dickey as my English professor. What an extraordinary man. Certainly echoes of Hemingway in his writing and his persona.

Burt Reynolds’ finest performance - he owned this role. He should have done more like it. The man could act and he was much more than the charming rogue he played in so many lighthearted roles. Damn good in Boogie Nights though!

One of my favorite films AND books. If you haven't read James Dickey's "DELIVERANCE" yet, do it. So much more haunting beauty than is possible in film.
JX: Actually felt this was one of the few times in cinematic history where the movie did the book justice--no doubt because JD was so intimately involved. Can't imagine WHO would have made a better sheriff.
Well I can only presume you state that without much reflection on the medium you so casually and speciously underrate, which not only provides for the narrative of a novel but also the '...is worth a thousand words' thing at the rate of thirty per second, or twenty-four, as the case may be. But hey that's okay, we get your point, Dickey was a hulluva writer.

The only thing I have "against" it is in the DVD commentary by Boorman: He says, "um" and "uh" about a million times during it, as if he was distracted by 10 things going on around him. Hard (for me) to listen to, but the movie is of course fantastic. * Supposedly the guy who played Merlin (Nicol Williamson) and the woman who played Morgana (Helen Mirren) apparently could not stand each other in real life, but I think in this case that worked to the director's advantage. By the way Morgana's mother, wife of the King that Uther seduced with Merlin's help, was played by the director's daughter nudity and all!

DELIVERANCE was shot primarily in Rabun County in northeastern Georgia. The canoe scenes were filmed in the Tallulah Gorge southeast of Clayton and on the Chattooga River. This river divides the northeastern corner of Georgia from the northwestern corner of South Carolina. Additional scenes were shot in Salem, South Carolina.
Interesting fact: The local actor playing the banjo in the famous scene did not pick a single note during the main sequence. There is a professional banjo player hiding behind the actor doing the actual picking, with his arms fully shown, with the prop department hiding it all with specially made shirt for the actor. It was intentionally shot from the very low angle looking up so the effect could be more easily hidden.
I totally believe John Boorman when he says he had a "turbulent" relationship with James Dickey while making the movie. This documentary makes it look as though Dickey was sometimes trying to direct the movie himself!

Jon Voight was such a gifted actor in his day. He went from Deliverance to Coming Home, a great Vietnam film about two different ways men saw that war. I tought he was great looking guy as well.Angeline looks so much like her mother that you wouln't put them together and I do think he is suffering the hollywood backlash making your child 2nd to your career. Back to the film, excellent work!

Dahlonega?! In the mid 70’s my family lived in Atlanta then Hall Co. We use to go to Dahlonega for these festivals? I can’t really remember but it was fun, great vague memories ( I was little!) and great food. There was a place called the Smith House?

I read an interview with Boorman about how Reynolds was going to do the scene involving him getting knocked out of the canoe. Boorman wanted to use a dummy to simulate Reynolds going over a waterfall. Reynolds insisted that he do it himself because a dummy wouldn't look convincing. Boorman relented, and while filming the dangerous scene Reynolds got knocked out and wound up in the hospital. When Boorman visited Reynolds in the hospital the first thing Reynolds asked was "how did the shot look"? Boorman replied "it looked like a dummy going over a waterfall".
It showed another character jumping in the jeep with the griner brothers but his face was never shown.. I always wondered was it the bill McKinney character showing the fact that him and the toothless guy followed them along the river route by foot and were watching them all along
According to Reynolds, Boorman threw Dickey's ass off the set after a few days. He was such an annoyance. Brought him back at the end for his 'Sheriff" scene.

What they really need to do is make a better movie about albert Johnson the mad trapper....toughest man ever to evade the Mounties for 3 months in -40 to -120 degree weather thru the Yukon mountain passes...death hunt movie was good but didnt depict that kind of beyond extreme hardship...even the Mounties called him superhuman beyond belief..
The people making a movie with advanced cameras to be distributed across the country to be shown in large architectural structures to millions of people with the disposable income and free time to get in 2,000 lb affordable machines running on fossil fuels and drive to air conditioned theaters are lamenting the development of this country

Deliverance still packs a punch every time I've watched it with Dueling Banjos music running through my head - a movie masterpiece!
It uses relevant insight on survival, transformation from the ordinary, which knows no bounderies-backwoodsmen like them did and do exist.
I had no idea the writer played the sheriff, always thought that performance was amazing.

No. If you look closely, you see that the guy with the Griners has grey hair and it‘s slightly longer than the toothless man‘s.

Dickey reminds me of Blatty with the Exorcist, definitely some parallels there between the two men.
