An outstanding (1991) cover version of 'Sacrifice' by Sinead O'Connor, one of best known masterpieces of Elton John & Bernie Taupin - 1989
The song is beloved by both Elton John and Bernie Taupin and deemed a bookend of sorts to their first hit "Your Song". Bernie has said he is surprised he wrote it, and said in an interview, "I think 'Sacrifice' is one of the best songs we've written." The song is not a typical love song, but rather a song about a breakup of a marriage where the loss of the relationship is "no sacrifice." Taupin was going through marital problems at the time, which served as inspiration for the song.

The greatest female vocalist of all time in my opinion.
I think that Sinead O’Connor makes a lot of people’s top ten list.
She had plenty of power, control, range, and pitch; and was not fatiguing to listen to.
When it comes to “the best” in a music category, it’s going to be subjective; as you said- your opinion. She would have gone on to be significantly more successful if she hadn’t taken a stand for what she believed in when she was on Saturday Night Live. Awfully tough to not respect someone who stands for what they believe in, regardless of the cost to themselves. A lot of people who disrespected her for it probably felt a little embarrassed later on when she was proven to be right.
When my day is bad and I'm tired and lonely, I listen to her sing. And she brings me back to life. Even from my darkest day, her voice brings me back.

Totally agree. I absolutely loved sinead she was not only beautiful with the most amazing eyes that I have ever seen. She had the most amazing voice ever. Plus a true fighter for womens rights in ireland. She was also a true rebel just like me. My uncle harry is buried in Bray where sinead lived part of her life. Loved her so much. RIP. Gorgeous girl. It's like she's singing this from the other persons pov. Where one side doesn't see hurting others as a sacrifice and the other is left with the aftermath and feeling/believing they were sacrificed after giving their all.

She really does have a beautiful, angelic voice. She NAILED her cover of the classic Elton song. It really is a shame her action on SNL ruined her career. Sinead is so underrated.
That "stunt" was an honest statement and did not ruin her career. You must be from the USA. Her career has continued ever since. Her bipolar condition has been her biggest problem.
I think she was referring to the abuse that lives in the church and how it’s over looked. “Stunt”… Hmm… I think it was her speaking the truth maybe not in the way she wanted to entirely, but had like 30 seconds on live tv. So it was misunderstood by most till she was later able to speak on it fully. She was ahead of her time and was trying to bring light to a sore subject. If it would have been done in this decade she would have been considered a Hero…
Brave & she spoke the truth - I remember looking at her on Irish tv that particular night when she ripped up the pope’s picture - it was shocking but fantastic - the corruption-of the Irish catholic church they also brainwashed us all here in Ireland - it was shocking - so on that note I have nothing but admiration fir Sinead - she saw & knows what we all had to put up with in Ireland back then . -

Best cover ever of Elton John's Sacrifice. The additional lyric "I gave my heart" at the end of the song never fail to rip my heart to pieces and bring tears to my eyes. Rest in peace Sinead. A voice that shows love lost separated by sadness & pain.I believe Sinead is singing about her relationship with her Mother,who could never show her love to Sinead & it tore her up.
I keep hoping that one day I'll be amazed by more voices like hers. Musical instruments seem diminished by her voice that fills so gracefully the sound spectrum.
I've heard it for I don't know how many times but this "we lose direction" gives me goosebumps every time.
Always a sad song but this brings it home entirely real, the softness blending into flashes of strength Sinead puts is reassuring and also frightening.Elton John relied on the untruth in the chorus. Video adds a touch of its own too, very attractive performance.
