I don’t know how anyone can walk away from your tutorials. Thanks to you, I’m painting. You’re very talented and a great instructor, I’m learning a lot from you
I am a beginner. I am trying to find a step by step instructions on how to start. I have seen video were people just paint and don't explain what or why they are doing. I loved your commentary. Please do more for the absolute beginners.
Makes me want to try pastels. They’ve always looking too challenging. But I’ll put them on my Christmas list. I enjoyed your watercolor demos too. Thanks.
I've been following you for a while and I love your instruction and style. This piece has lovely color combinations. So soft and mellow! Thanks for sharing ,Susan!
I'm painting with pastels only lately but I'm used to oil pastels. Yesterday I got my first set of soft pastels and I'm kinda struggling haha 😄. This tutorial was very helpful, thanks a ton !
I'm not new to art, but I am new to soft pastels. I'm trying this tutorial, and if I enjoy it I might even continue. I have dabbled in various crafts and art forms since I was a kid, and have settled into watercolour as my main outlet, but I'm always looking to try new things and I love your style of pastel painting. I don't generally join Patreon subscriptions, but if I feel like this is something I will enjoy, I may try it out, for a while at least.
It sounds like you're already a creative person, so I think you'll get the hang of it and I would love to have you as part of my Patreon family. You can always cancel if it doesn’t provide what you’re looking for.
Hi Susan 🎉 I'm back for a try at Pastel again 🎉 I am going to add that set to the new Arrtx 72 set I just received today. Round half sticks with good adhesion 🎉 Carbothello Pastel Pencil set for details ❤ Pan Pastels for tint and shade, with the colorless blender and tools. I'm scribbling on Canson XL Sand grain paper and prepared my own sanded surface on a canvas board for tomorrow. Setting up my table easel for standing away from work. I have a lot of videos to watch. Thank you for STILL being here ❤
Took the plunge and joined your Patreon for my birthday month. I have started this pic, so far it's ok. I am an acrylic painter but it gives me migraines so I am changing to pastels and it's quite a challenge lol I am determined to get there though by the end of this month I am hoping to get something I like.
Oh yay! Thank you so much and I think I might’ve actually seen your painting and made a comment on it. I’m so grateful for your support and I pray you learn lots and have a lot of fun.
😊 Ohh , sorry but I am not being nosy here, I just wanted to say that it's exactly the same for me, actually watercolor is my first love, I have created great artwork with acrylic but literally it gives me migraines too soo I found this beautiful medium for creating what I like , and I love this medium of soft pastels so much, here in my location we have a beautiful option of mungyo gallery artists soft pastels, I started with that , but I love my rembrandts and sennelier too. I like her tutorials too even though I don't regularly comment but I follow this channel years. ❤❤❤❤❤
I have mungyo 72 colors will i be able to paint this? Or you recommend this same set you are using . I want to learn moody style but so far I always paint like Ghibli ! 😂idk it’s the oil pastel set I’m using wrong or my color choice not right , please help 🙏
It's the same. I have the Mungyo too. I only use these for under painting but I like them. Mungyo might even produce these. I know the Hobbylobby sets are Mungyo.
I have this set from Mungyo and really like it but there isn't open stock. I use it for under painting only. The box they came in is worth the price on its own. Susan's description is great.
Hullo Susan, I enjoyed watching this beginner focused video! You present quality techniques and basic ideas for creating a painting! I am curious about this set of pastels and how permanent they are? I know practice pieces are not supposed to be long lasting works of Art, so lightfastness is not the most important quality when starting out. I have experienced some luck when starting a new to me medium and made some lovely paintings in my beginner stages. I believe that Sennelier’s Paris set of sticks is the best starters set for an Artist that has experience in other mediums. Yes, cost is alway a consideration, but buying the least expensive supplies can hobble your progress and in some situations cause frustration with a new medium. I love how the Sennelier half stick sets are made and how they hold up with beginners. I have purchased only one set of Sennelier full sticks and I experienced horrible frustration with breaking the sticks in half, several sticks simply crumbled into dust! So frustrating!! Thank you for sharing this sweet painting demonstration and sharing your techniques with us. Have a lovely day.
I’m not positive on the lightfastness of color block pastels. That’s why I lean towards recommending them for beginners. And Sennelier pastels are always some of my favorites, but I know what you are talking about with how some colors crumble. It has to do with the material or element they used to create certain colors. Some of them are just more fragile than others. I love the Sennelier stick sets because the size is just perfect.
@@monetcafe I honestly believe the half sticks are made with a different recipe! They simply hold together better! Maybe as they don’t have the label ? I will no longer buy full sticks from them. Schmincke are the best I can afford. So buttery and soft, a top layer pastel for sure!!
Maybe I'll try this. I have some expensive pastels but am scared to waste them for practice so I just got a 72 set Ohuhu pastels for under 22.00 they look a lot like this set. It would help if you say you can use just one set to stick to that set.
I always encourage Artist to improvise with these things. I know that not everyone can afford to buy new supplies for a tutorial. So just use what you have, sweetheart and have fun!
That's amazing

That brings such a big smile to my face! Hope you keep learning and have fun on this painting journey!

So glad it was helpful! Keep it up. You can do it!
Gorgeous, I've never really used soft pastels before but this was a wonderful introduction. Thank you for sharing. :)

excellent , it reminds me Karen Margulis lessons

Hi,@miou196, I only use soft pastels, not oil pastels. I love their vibrancy and ability to layer. Happy Painting!
@@raginighag6595 I have oil pastel I was hoping that will do . 😅 bc I love the texture of oil pastel 🥹
@@monetcafe My lightest layer isn't very bright is it because I have soft oil pastels?

Around 00:08:00 mins is when the ad for these pastels stops and the actual tutorial begins.
very similar to Karen Margulis paintings, thanks
Wow!!! Love her work :)
Since I break my pastels into thirds or halfs I just break them with the wrapper still on then the halves just slide out
Well, that’s some good information. Thank you so much!
@@monetcafe :) it works about 95% of the time - very few wrappers left to actually cut off! I also am super annoyed by the wrappers lol 😂
Can you show us an actual Monet painting how we could try to emulate one of his own creations
Thanks for that input, @buckleybets! I'll have to keep that in mind!
