Wow! Two DPUs with 100 cars of coal on either end, so I believe we are looking at 22,000 tons of coal on the move. Hugely impressive. Dave, you were in the right spot at the right time. Thank you for this video. Ted

So cool to see a Bailey train! I'll be going to "Harvey" tomorrow morning to deliver roof channel and bolts. So I'll be right below the loadout for the Bailey system! I liked seeing and hearing those big EMD SDs leading that train. It doesn't matter to me how old they are, the 2 cycle prime movers seem to promise smooth power to my ear, unlike the "Glug-glug" from the 4 cycle GEs.
I heard on another railfan site that one throttle setting that EMD neglected to build into their locomotives is 'QUIT.' They might stall for various reasons, but like big draft horses they will pull their hearts out for you until you tell them to stop or they die.

    • @ccrx6700

@@ccrx6700 I picked it up from a guy who was documenting a stalled freight with IIRC a four loco consist. 2 GEs, an SD40-2 of about the same vintage as yours and I don't recall what the fourth engine was. All four were MUed at the head end but the SD40 was NOT the lead engine.
The engineer realized he was in trouble right away when first one and then another engine shut down. Then the third unit crapped out and he couldn't even crawl, but that 40 still responded to the throttle, trying her hardest before the engineer reined her in before she could burn out.
The crew eventually got a 2nd unit running (sorta) and a two unit rescue showed up. The SD40 responded to the throttle like it was no big thing, took the abuse with no complaint and it and the two and a half others (remember the "sorta?") got the train into motion and eventually "home."
I have loved and respected EMD locomotives since I was a kid ... I'm YOUR age. I swear these things have personalities and you can tell when they're happy doing their thing ... or not.

That was an impressive train. Coal trains have _always_ been my favorite since I was a boy in the early 60s. I had an uncle who was an engineer with L&N Railroad in East Tennessee since the steam days. He pulled a lot of coal and after he got the cushy switching jobs before he retired I would meet him at the end of the bridge and go switch with him and "the boys." I was the horn man and knew what to do no worries.

    I like the horsey cars!
I used to go down to the walking bridge over the rail lines just down from the 17th Street bridge in Altoona while I was going to school there to watch the Conrail trains go by. Our lucky day too! Because you made this great catch.
Maybe these coal cars carry "electric vehicle fuel" but the electric vehicle recovers a lot of the braking energy so more efficient use of the fuel.
Glad to have some coal delivered to the plant here in North Carolina because it was down to 14 degrees over the weekend! But when the sun is out my heat pump shuts off and I enjoy some hours of FREE solar energy through the south facing sunroom windows! I reclose the curtains in the evening to prevent some loss through the night. With a little more design and effort, a significant amount of energy can be saved over a year. It would behoove us to think about energy conservation when new homes are built or older ones remodeled.

    Dave,
20,000 + tons, close to two miles long? You caught a ‘super heavy’ amazing! Imagine maintaining a railroad and saying…..oh let’s run 20000 tons today! Yikes!
Mid train DPU’s are creating quite stir….. if they are remotely operated by the head end, are they manually controlled?…..computer controlled and varied?
Ok, no empties, curves may not be a problem, due to the shear weight they are glued to the rails. Maybe string-lining is low risk?
What about multiple grades, half the train going upgrade, half the train going down? Slack action? Should the front locomotives be at notch eight and DPU’s be in Dynamic braking? Very intense!
Man Dave…. You love railroading!! You brighten my day.
    Stay safe brother!
    Randy

These coal trains are the bread and butter of NS, they make a lot of
money with them Randy. Mid DPU's are controlled by the lead loco
via radio signal. The engineer can choose to run that lead loco in
either manual or have a computer run it, either case the mid locos
follow suit whatever the lead loco does. However you do bring up
a good point about grades and yes on some grades these long trains
have one set of locos in power throttle and another set on the same
train in dynamics or visa versa. Very, very rare these empty hopper
cars stringline, they are a bit too heavy for that. Lightweight empty
cars are the ones most often to string line and that usually happens
when loads are behind the empty cars, they pull the lightweight
cars back while the loco is pulling the front of the cars forward
and they can jump off. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the NS Coal Train video my friend.

    Hey Dave
Every now and theni run across a video I haven't seen. Great video
We see these big coal trains running out of carbon County Utah. They usually have two on the rear too to help them in the mountains.
    Awesome video

You are certainly welcome Dan. We've never had an earth quake
around here thank goodness and hope we never do. Appreciate

    That would make them ex-cons.😂
If you're really lucky you'll see a PC car or two. A few years ago there was an ex PRR FM flat with some work equipment on deck coupled to an old riveted well flat. The well flat had ties inside the well with rail in racks on each side.

I've never seen a PC car in person Pete, that would be really cool.
I've seen one PRR/NYC car at a CSX yard in Connellsville, got a video
on that I took 2 years ago and haven't shown it yet. Thank you so
much for taking the time to check out the NS Coal Train video my friend.
