After a large tree fell down over the tracks of the one foot gauge Lynton Little Railway we fired up Merlin our 0-4-2 tank engine to run a wood train to pick up the cut timber from the fallen tree
Yes. Absolutely! This is so overkill for that little pile of wood I have mad respect for it. "SEE HONEY! I Told you this whole small steam railway would come in handy!"
Wish we were neighbors, I'd have happily helped load wood and sharpen the chainsaw in exchange for a ride on the train. Great time, thanks for bringing us along.
God I love narrow gauge trains, they’re so cute and the little jobs they take on are always fun to watch, honestly working a small narrow gauge railway is one of my dream jobs
Amazing little railroad! I can see it being very handy in maintaining the property at reduced cost since you can run it without buying diesel or fuel oil.
That looks like fun. I am quite jealous. One thing I find interesting is how people outside of the U.S. use the word timber. In the U.S. it is only used for large beams , the smallest would be a 6 inch by 6 inch beam. Timber isn’t used to refer to planks, boards , and certainly never fire wood. Timber to us in the US implies large structural wood. This is just an observation. I really like your train.
Timber is just any wood that has been cut and processed for construction. Size doesn’t make a difference. This is the official definition and it doesn’t change based on location, people are either right or wrong and in this case he was wrong.
Cool, I like your little engines. I wish we had a little line on my property, but sadly here in the Ozarks we have too many sinkholes and hills for it to work. I’m probably better off just using my golf cart and tractor. Cool Locos though.
Fab use of the train and total justification for having a railway. But will someone please buy the gorilla a chainsaw helmet, even if only for the ear protection and show it how to sharpen a chain on a saw?!
@@johnphillips592 guaranteed @markowend6238 would not say it to his face. Hiding behind the screen of a computer or a smart device has created many internet tough guys who are cowards in real life. This guy is a classic example. Very rude.
@@johnphillips592Maybe @marktownend6238 is some huge muscular badass who isn’t some weak smartass hiding behind his computer and could easily take the large man with a dull chainsaw blade after calling him “”gorilla” to his face.
Adoring this productive little railway Hope to see the steam engine also being used to help reforestation and rehabilitation of the local nature like building ponds in wet areas and transporting saplings, soil, sheep fencing. Leave enough dead and fallen wood 🪵 leaves 🍃🍂🍁 and branches left under tree canopies to decompose and create habitats 🐞for hundreds of thousands of creatures. A railway can't only be good for extraction of materials.
hello sir, glad you have uploaded the video again, excuse me sir, greetings one poor fellow, sorry sir, I want to ask, is the locomotive itself assembled or made by yourself? If yes, may I know where it is made?😢❤
What's going on with engineman Tate? Who did the train examination before the train departed? No white tail disc on the last wagon as the train departs! How on earth are you going to know the train has arrived complete without that tail disc! Great video as usual John, keep up the good work. Regards Colin
Wouldn't this have been a lot easier to just make a couple trips with the tractor and bucket instead of having to load, and unload all that by hand? Just seems to me that you make a lot of work for yourselves. Oh, you may want to sharpen your chain too.
I have to ask, what is the max a train of that size can pull, or would the tracks max out before the rail? I want to one da have a utility train line on my property and just trying to get an idea of the gauge and size of steamer I would need.
The Lynton Railway is one foot gauge , as for loads it all depends on the grades on your line , The Lynton Railway has grades as steep as 1 in 30 , we were all amazed when Merlin took off with this train up hill as there was about 3 ton of wood aboard , check out this link studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoGiPw1yQp4CU/edit it shows a load test of Merlin .
Me and the boys at age 70 living out our dreams of running our own railroad
hahaha exactly
Yes. Absolutely! This is so overkill for that little pile of wood I have mad respect for it.
"SEE HONEY! I Told you this whole small steam railway would come in handy!"
I always dreamed of building a miniature railway to help with everyday work. This feels like that dream made real and i love it.
Thanks , we are very fortunate to be part of this little railway .
Wish we were neighbors, I'd have happily helped load wood and sharpen the chainsaw in exchange for a ride on the train. Great time, thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks for the comment , it is a very special railway .
I thought the chain needed sharpening also.

Exceptional video John, absolutely love Merlin and Lynton railway, was such a pleasure learning and operating along side you on the weekend.
No worries , great day , if a little wet
I'm always fond of this railway and Merlin, really wonderful railway.
Thanks , it's a great little railway .
Absolutely brilliant video! And the idea of using the train to move the wood was also great.
We try to use the train as much as possible for certain tasks .thanks for the comment
From across the pond in the US...very much appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

Pretty cool beans! Nice road system and very cool locos and cars!

What a grand little loco. A useful engine, one might say...
Very true .
Merlin is a little champion 🙂
I reckon the up keep there would be full on.Lots of fun to be had though 🙂
True but the Friday Boys keep on top of it .
Merlin’s a powerful engine
Yes , pretty good for its size
Been waiting for a video like this I absolutely love these lil trains

Thanks for the comment , we are all different .
"Timber" is two syllables, which is difficult for many Americans. (I am American.)
@ garryferringyon811 Wtf? , from a New Yorker.
Timbers are currently any lumber dimension larger than a 6x6. 6x6 is lumber whereas a 6x7 is a timber.

Love the railway. Nice to see an actual working train. Another great video, nicely shot and edited. Did you ever do this as a job John?😅

Very very nice movie, its remind me to times of the silent movie "The General" from Buster Keaton❤❤❤❤❤❤....lost my heart on steamengines 😊
Thanks , glad it brought back some great memories .
For some reason, I could see this railway in Thomas and Friends/The Railway Series.
Agreed , Merlin is a very useful engine .

Great video John :)
Thanks Simon , much appreciated .
awww this is cute!
How fun! Doing some actual work for once! Ashamed to use that yellow front loader.

Thanks , glad it brought back some fond memories
En Roumanie, ils dėbardent beaucoup de bois avec des locos magnifiques 😂
That sounds interesting
I need to find more info on these little trains. Looks like it could be an interesting toy for someone with a big piece of property.
The little engine that could, would that be a tonne of wood or more.
Anyway seasoned and split Merlin has some fuel for next year.
We worked out it was just under 3 ton , Merlin steams ok on wood but it requires a lot to keep up pressure
Good video, like!
Thanks .
hello sir, glad you have uploaded the video again, excuse me sir, greetings one poor fellow, sorry sir, I want to ask, is the locomotive itself assembled or made by yourself? If yes, may I know where it is made?😢❤
Merlin was made by the owner and it was made in Melbourne Australia .

I will have to reprimand him for this lap in procedure , lol .
On a scale of 1 to100, the fun factor of that train is about 150.
Very true , it's a fun little railway .
Mom tells you to go chop wood, yes mom!
That chainsaw bloke has all the safety gear on ha ha.
I always wanted one of those trains in my yard were do u live do you let people ride it
It is a private railway and not open to the public , it's located east of Melbourne Australia .
I’m told wood contains no sulphur so generates no Sulphuric Acid unlike coal, especially wet coal.
Nice railway. 10 1/4”?
Thanks , the Lynton Railway is one foot gauge , only trouble with wood is you need a lot of it to keep up steam , thanks for the comment .

Toy train😊
A large excavator was also used GG made the whole purpose of the trains a novelty

Bit of ppe when using saws isn't a bad Idea.
I bet the smoke coming from the stack smelled good.

Depot dog check the wood...did he leave his mark?
No , just a sniff
4.52 Wheelslip!!
Werent these trains the same as chile imported at charcoal mines in lota, ......
Sorry , no , these are all hand made by the owner
Searched up "Wooden Train" and got this lol 😭

I am a new guy who try to built a back yard train. Where can i find construction plans for the red black steam loco?
Sorry there aren't any , Merlin was hand built by the owner .
grand

What country is this railway in ? Australia ? Britain ?
It's on the outskirts of Melbourne Australia .

Very cool, but the big dumb guy with the excavator spoils it.
He's no dumb guy , he owns a multi million dollar earth moving business and is building a one foot gauge railway as well
What Guage is this and where can you buy locos , freight cars and track ?
The Lynton Little Railway is one foot gauge , locos are available , not sure about wagons but all of our rollingstock and locos are hand made
that 4 wheel drive vehicle with the large bucket is not an excavator, an excavator is a vehicle with tracks on it with a boom and a bucket.
Thank you for the comment , I hope you enjoyed the video .

Folks go easy on chopping those trees down it's not good for the environment
It blew down in a storm and blocked the tracks
