Everyone played their parts to the hilt. Simply flawless. One of the most painful, out of many, is hearing Paul say "Roll on two" for John. It looked like it was the hardest thing he would ever say, and something he already regretted. The mute, tears of all the guards, surrounding John was a beautiful testament to his, sheer, goodness.

@@ckobo84 Except when he killed the two little girls and murdered the folks in the hold-up (a pregnant lady and probably her fetus, plus at least one other person). I do enjoy the work of the ACTOR who portrayed Wild Bill -- Sam Rockwell -- and in this movie loved his "oh, so polite" raised pinkie finger when he drank his doped RC Cola.

Michael Clarke Duncan performance is somehow underrated when he was the greatest part of an excellent movie.
He easily could've been a cheap character for this movie, but the depth he brought to this role was insane. The man deserved his flowers for this role.
    RIP Duncan (1957-2012).

For many it may seem unfair that Big John was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit, but one must understand that he WANTED to die. He was in so much pain with what he felt going on in the world, that the electric chair was his salvation.

22:13 "I sure wish I could've met you guys somewheres else."
Damm that line. It's like a thousand knives through the heart. Gets me every time cuz it really sums up the movie (and life) so poetically. There's so much pain, depth and poignancy to that quote and it just really makes you think. If only Eduard Delacroix, or any of us for that matter, had certain people in our lives or for the ones who ARE in our lives, if only we had met them earlier, perhaps we wouldn't have gone down a certain path. Or we wouldn't have made certain questionable decisions and our lives could have been so much different, for the better. It's why it's so important to never take those people who have made a positive influence in our lives for granted... because not everyone is so lucky to have them.

The screenwriters, director, set designers, the whole crew did exemplary jobs on TGM. Yes, every actor "hit it out of the park" in their respective roles. But consider that before they were brought in on the project, the original source was Stephen King's book/serial novelette -- SOLID BASE MATERIAL will, usually, bring forth a stellar final product for the big screen. Pretty much the same line-up is on-board for another King vehicle: "The Shawshank Redemption," directed by Frank Darabont plus a couple actors from TGM (Harry the older E Block guard, the blonde girls' father). It's another tear-jerker, be forewarned! Shawshank is almost as good a movie as Mile. Give it a view and compare/contrast.

    1. YOU WILL CRY
    2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production so his part was done later.
    3. Goof: In 1935 black and white inmates were not kept in the same prison.,
    4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
    5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.
    6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse:
    The Langoliers.
    7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream.
    8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
    9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch.
    10. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer.(possibly a racial thing. It was 1935.
    11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are as tall as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed
and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene before Dels execution they used a real mouse and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off.
    13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced

To give you an idea of how long Paul might live, a field mouse's average lifespan is 1 year. Mr. Jingles has lived for over 60. So if you times the average age (80) x 60 (the multiplier that we have based on Mr. Jingles' lifespan) Paul will have to live for *4,800* years before being allowed to die. He's basically like Longinus (the Roman Centurion whose spear pierced Jesus' side) and who was cursed with immortality for it.

I love that story, and the Caska books. I think Paul would get to a point where his age somewhat stabilizes, Mr. Jingles looks old and moves a little slow but other than that he can still walk around. the age is there but he cant get sick.
I would imagine that either of them could die if crushed under impact of something large enough to physically crush them, but baring that they would live the extreme amount of time.
Paul has enough of the Christian or Godly belief that he wouldn't commit suicide.
They could make more story out of this, although it would never have the feel of this movie. It would turn into a Sy Fi movie.
I wish they would make movies about Longinus. That could be very epic. Also he in a sense was cursed, so he could be hurt and feel pain, but he couldn't be killed so it was more than just a life spell, it was an immortality curse.

Imagine seeing this in the cinema? The reactions of other couples, etc., both men and women. Crying, like laughter, is contagious. Truly not a dry eye in the house. I’ve only met one person who didn’t like this film, a woman I used to work with. Educated, capable, functional, she appeared human in every other way.

Tom Hanks was on a roll during this period having one great move after another starting with "A League of Their Own" in 1992 through "Catch Me If You Can" in 2002. "The Green Mile" is some of his finest work along with "Saving Private Ryan" and "Philadelphia".

There are three movies guaranteed to make me cry every time I watch them, no matter how many times I've seen them and know the ending. This, Armageddon, and Big Fish. It never fails, put either of the three movies on and I'm a blubbering mess sinking into the sofa surrounded by tissues..

If this movie doesn't leave you speechless, you weren't paying attention.
I hold this movie as one of the most perfect movies ever made.
Every scene, every character, every line of dialogue, it all comes together into a perfect work of cinematic art, full of humor and horror and love and hate that creates an overwhelming emotional experience that definitely leaves its mark on everybody who watches it.
    The acting was amazing.
Michael Clarke Duncan's performance as John Coffey is easily one of the best performances in movie history.
Even Doug Hutchison who played Percy Wetmore gave such a great performance making us hate that character as much as I've ever hated a character in any movie ever.
Movies don't get any better than this.
