That was almost like playing dress-up in a favorite cousin's magical dressing room. Delightful!
You're busy with your career. Time is your scarcest asset. This huge, desirable collection would be difficult to sell at its maximum potential as a DIY project. There must be moments when you're tempted to just give boxloads away, which could be fun... if only pieces went to people who'd love them as much as you do. But donating isn't ideal for 90%. Paying a price forces a buyer to focus on what they'd truly value and care for, and preserving special vintage pieces for posterity was one key goal. Another was to free up capital for your next major investments. So, sounds like some gifts make sense but most of it should ideally go at a fair price. Other commenters have suggestions how.
How to choose? It's a pleasure to look back at pieces that are mementos, love tokens, trophies, souvenirs and great finds. Now you're more focused on looking forward. Your challenge is to curate a limited collection of things that are non-negotiable keepers, whether for their sentimental or utilitarian reasons. It would ideally represent the best, most useful and pleasing examples of each category that you foresee needing (bags for a state dinner, cocktail party, business, travel, weddings, town, country, summer, winter, gifts, various colorways ...) for how you want to dress now and in the future. Plus a selection of display items. Then find worthy homes for the rest.
In your shoes I might aim for two cuts. A rough cut; an evaluation; a second cut.
First I'd try every single piece on, to see if it still has the same impact as when originally worn. Some vintage favorites no longer sing because your taste and features have changed a bit; other things that didn't suit you as a 20-something have become useful. Seeing each piece with fresh eyes makes it easier to immediately let go of things that you won't wear again. Not because you dislike them but because today you have even better options for the situations where you once wore those pieces.
You can keep every single scarf. They take no space. Ditto cashmere sweaters, since you're not moving South. Shoes, however, deserve a hard cull.
I too would hate getting rid of anything that a loved one had given me. But if I relabeled the process as turning their gifts (bags, jewelry) into a new gift you hope to enjoy with the same people (e.g., home in Europe) it might be easier to let some of them go.
I'd take a good photo and video snip (with voiceover) of everything as you go. You'll have a reference album without opening every drawer again.
Once you have a first cut of keepers set aside and sorted by type/color, it's easier to see if there are too many in one category (say, black totes) and not enough in other categories you like (e.g., vivid colored bags.) It would be a shame if a declutter resulted in more purchases just because one key category got accidentally wiped out.
One last idea I got from a friend who has made well into six figures from his large vintage golf club collection: he hired two of his teenagers who wanted to raise money for their expensive pursuits (the girl was an Olympian athlete) to do the merchandising. The kids set up a well lit photo booth in a fixed spot, researched each piece, correctly labeled and organized the online sales. They got paid from a percentage of proceeds, not by the house. With repetition they became very good at it and could process a large volume quickly. Win-win: dad got free space and cash; kids made more than they could earn elsewhere while honing new skills; collectors found the vintage pieces. Do you have a nieces.nephews or stay-at-home/retiree friends who need some income and have the aptitude to document your collections? If you're uncomfortable with the big online resellers, that might be an opportunity.
Good luck. We'll follow with interest. In my fantasy self life, I'd buy half your vintage costume jewelry collection.

Your collection is so nice. Wow I don’t have any vintage. I have a really bad neck. Necklaces (heavy) on thr top bone of Nick. Hurt and cause me pain. Sadly. But I still love and want to get more than I have. Not much tho. Bags wow. Earrings I love. Not really heavy. A few caught my eye on it all for sure. You have a ton. I haven’t ever seen such a big collection. I’m peeping some for sure.

Jen, have you ever thought of starting a store on Etsy or eBay? You have a massive amount of items there and selling them via your YT Channel is a rather slow way to whittle down all that you have. It's simply mind blowing the amount of fashion jewellery alone and I feel it would be much more convenient to be listing each item, with a description, photos and price so that a well informed choice can be made, not rushed. I know that these items will be sell for very high prices and it's owed to the customer to list a description. At the cost these items are, most especially the fashion jewellery, they really need to be stored in a much better manner than they are. Items at these prices should be cared for and stored in proper jewellery cases, lined display drawers etc. They shouldn't even be touching each other. Even though I still have a number of fashion jewellery pieces left after I culled them right down, they're still arranged in a way that protects them in a large jewellery case. I have been building a fine jewellery collection for well over the last decade which is satisfying for my taste and love of coloured gems in particular. These, I keep in the boxes they were purchased in as having precious metals touching is not a good idea. My Italian made leather handbags are stored in storage bags to keep them protected and my vast amount of footwear remain stored in their shoe boxes too. I do love natural fibres for my clothing, hence owning a large amount of leather garments. Despite hanging in my wardrobe, they are still protected, as each item comes in its own protective fabric bag. I realise that you wouldn't necessarily have the time to run an Etsy store etc., yet it's worth it to hire someone to help to take care of it and monitor the sales, deal with consumers and send parcels. If you did a Live video for subscribers to purchase, this could potentially last an entire day by the time you get through each item. I understand that you want those loyal to you to have the first choice, yet you may need to do a video or two holding up each piece, giving a quick rundown on the item and price and only then let anyone interested to get in touch. Doing a Live would just be chaotic, especially with the many time-zones involved and not everyone being able to be included. Personally, I feel it's better to do some videos showcasing the items for sale and let those interested contact you. The rest can be sold via Etsy or eBay. As I have three pair of diamond earrings on lay-by with my Jeweller, you can count me out of this event. I'm swamped by recent make-up releases, other necessities and a whole bunch of bills that love to all drop at once.🤷🏼‍♀️ Lets not forget all the medical bills and medications just to really kick the boot in too. It would be a dream for myself to help you out with this, as it's something that very much interests me. Unfortunately, you'd have to pay for my plane fare and that completely defeats the whole purpose. Hope you're able to work out what's best for you. Love Kris.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

I have a lot of jewelry too, by many designers. Both real and faux. Those silver earring pieces with the round motifs are based on Balinese designs, a la John Hardy. If they aren't John Hardy (or Lagos, but those resemble Hardy), they aren't worth a lot. Companies like QVC were commissioning large quantities of that stuff about 20-30 years ago. A pair of earrings like those would have sold for about $25.
Swarovski pieces have low resale too. I know because I priced my stuff like that. What is the art deco necklace or bracelet with the little green stones? That's pretty. Anything you have with a name, like Kenneth Jay Lane, may be able to be sold through The Real Real. Same with Jaques Fath. Vintage Chanel the same. They appraise it and sell enough to know current market prices. You may not get top dollar, but they can make order out of the chaos that ensues with a lot of volume.
Keep those white diamond art deco/art nouveau reproductions if you love them. You won't get big bucks for them, and nobody makes that quality any more. In the mid to late 1990s, gold was only around $360 an oz. And there was a ton of hand setting being done cheaply in China and Southeast Asia. In fact, with gold so low, some costume jewelers were plating their stuff in 18K. Like Joan Rivers, believe it or not. No more. So keep it if you'll wear it.
Some of your bolder pieces look like they could be Heidi Daus. She isn't as popular and she used to be and her quality has declined. But she still has many collectors out there. She used to use Swarovski crystals in her designs. Ebay or Etsy would be your best bet for those.
In my area, a member of The Real Real will come to your house, photograph your things for your records, and take them for appraisal. Otherwise you will have a full time job trying to sell those things. And you'll have to package it all individually if you sell online. It's a lot of work. Plus, because you stored them the way you have, you have damage to everything jumbled in those jewelry boxes. Even if it only shows as wear and tear. And you'll get returns because of that.
Any designer sunglasses may be products for The Real Real as well. Same for your handbags and clothes. They may not pay the most, but they have people in major areas who can help you sort this out. This is a massive undertaking. I know. I've been there. The original boxes add value to everything, so keep those to pair with the items you want to sell.
If you get enough mileage from your subscribers, then good for you. But this type of declutter needs help. And do sell what you know you'll never wear. Steel yourself. You will not get what you expect for most of these things. I had to adjust to the shock. And I have bought differently ever since. Don't keep anything you never use. Your house isn't a museum.
Good luck. Sorry for the long post. But I had a huge collection of bags, jewelry and accessories that I decluttered. I was in love with everything and it was hard. Especially when I only got a fraction of what I paid. But I haven't reached for any of those things since. Plus you're selling to consolidate and trade up. Hope this helps. 💚

Deborah, you are so on point. My stepmother passed away last year and I had to go through all her jewelry, clothing, etc… More sentimental value these days compared to what she paid for them “back in the day”. I recognize some of the items Jennifer showed in this video. Several my stepmother also owned. The only items I wound up keeping were her wedding band and engagement ring and a few other items that were 18K gold. The rest of the “vintage” items were not worth much anymore. I have a close friend who does estate sales and he gave me the “talk”. The rest of the estate he handled for me. So much clothing, kitchen items, purses, etc. And then there was my father’s “stuff”. He passed away in 2022. The only things that were valuable (only to me) were family pictures and certain items my father had saved from his youth. I found his 1929 vaccination records. It was truly amazing to find the things that my father had kept through so many decades.

@@ouiser1955 What a touching story! First my condolences for losing both your parents. Mine are gone too. It is quite the experience. But you had to be the one to go through all of their stuff. What a nightmare! Especially when you discover how little you get for vintage designer stuff, including jewelry. You were smart to get rid of the costume/fashion jewelry. Unless you plan to wear it yourself, it's a waste of space. If it's stamped Chanel you can maybe get some money for it, but not near retail. And there is no younger generation I know of who would be caught dead in most of that stuff. it's a shame. I wish it would make a resurgence. Jennifer has some lovely pieces, but there is little demand in most markets. I hope her fans will buy some just because it was hers.

Keep the items that you wear a lot; IMO you suit the gold-colored stuff. De-cluttering can be stressful and then you feel elated afterwards. This is a very minimalist, essentialist, discreet time for clothes. Indeed, some folk no longer wear a wristwatch and use the phone instead.
