I have always been told to choose between British English or American English in class, but then I happen to watch movies or series in English regardless of which accent they have. I personally love British English but it is quite difficult to imitate the accent , though I`m trying hard to catch it .. I’m brazilian, so I learnt the Ame accent at school, we are more influenced to speak like American. Then, 6 yrs ago I moved to London and nowadays I am really up to the Cockney accent. So, I particularly prefer the British one! 🇬🇧🏴♥️🤍

Great video, Jack! I teach British English for Secondary here in my town. I told my students that I’m going to be teaching them the British English, so you guys might find some differences with the American English (which I’m sure their teacher taught them in elementary school). I also told them that there’s nothing better than the other, it’s just about personal preference. Because I personally comfortable and familiar with British English, it’s just feels weird for me to pronounce words in American English style. And I told them, you are free to choose which type of English you’re interested in (outside the school), but in this school, we’re going to use the British English as the standard.
It's also very important to learn the accent and English that's around them. For instance, a French man who decides to live in California should learn American English if he wants to communicate effectively..

Although I'm living neither in the UK nor the US I'd still prefer to use British accent during my conversations with local citizens :-)
I totally agree with you. I focus on American English, but I always watch your videos and some more with British English and I follow someone with Australian English too. If one day I come across one of these speakers, I will be able to talk and get informed with them. It doesn't matter who invented what. The reality is what matters and there are many varieties of English. However, among these varieties there are more elements in common than the opposite.

And because of that I can pronounce for example the word better like... beta or beder depending on the spreech or expression I'm practicing at that moment. It’s different in Latin countries because you don’t have one single giant country producing freaking amounts of content. For English speaking world, America is like the giant the one which produces way more than anyone else so other English speaking countries cannot have real competition with American media. It’s like the same among Portuguese speak countries, Brazil is the giant producer who feeds everyone. In the case of Latin America things are more democratic. You have many countries feeding each other with content, but there’re no dominance like the US and Brazil over the country that speak their language

This argument that correct English is the original is so small and typical of those who have not studied anything about linguistics. The function of a language is to communicate and all have spontaneous and official resources for that. I am Brazilian and I can speak Portuguese, even though I am not from Portugal, which is the country where the language originated. Differences can generate preference, but this has to do with identity and not superiority.
At school we had teaching in the British in terms of speaking, vocabulary and grammar, but I forgot the British vocabulary and since then I have focused on the American account and vocabulary as well, so I have difficulty understanding someone who speaks British.
As you said that British English speaker can easily understand the American English so perfer to learn British my motive to learn english not a particular accent, I believe that accent work after you know the basics of that language

History, core values, holidays, sports, in all those fields we are closer to UK civilization than to American one, despite despite the dominant position of American culture through the TV. So, in my opinion, it may make more sense to learn the English with which you feel the most affinity. I had a cognitive conflict as a boy when I watched Sesame Street. They pronounced Z as Zee while I was taught to pronounce it as Zack. Generally though, we followed the British English in our Education system.
In grammar, I am insatiable and it doesn't matter to me which one And the thing that matters to me in the first place is grammar, whether it's British or American! But of course, the British type is more legal and grammatically more pleasing.
I confess that I prefer North American English because I think it sounds better to understand. Otherwise I've used more British resources to study such as: cambridge dictionary and grammar and british council website. Indeed I don't know a lot about the differences between them and I get a little confused about this is British and this is North American English. By the way, I've always said 'takeway' and I've just known it's a British word like 'zebra crossing' that I've not known either. I might not say which English I've been studying because I've used different resouces and tools, but I feel more comfortable with North American pronunciation because I like the conections and flap sounds, although British one has been more important lately. I've been listening to a lot British accent because it's more important for some exams but, to tell you the truth if one day I can understand what Adele talks about I'll be so glad.
for me is very difficult speack in english, some times i think some phrase on my mind and is like fluency but when is really need i can´t find the correctly words and need to thinks too much. It's really hard when the English School where you go to learn teaches you British, and then 90% of the English content you consume daily (movies, videogames, videos) are American, and which is worse, a daily American with slang; which makes you feel, as you say, frustrated by the fact that you learn a way of pronouncing and using the vocabulary but then you see different pronunciations and voc. But just as you said, if you take advantage of that instead of letting yourself fall overwhelmed by the situation, you will reach a better English understanding.
As a non native speaker, this is very relatable. I learned American English by myself (autodidact) and I can speak it very well, but now I'm in college and my teachers speak with British English. All of my textbooks are in British English. I generally don't have any problem understanding British English but I sometimes don't feel comfortable using my American pronunciation. For example: reading words such as: centre, theatre, colour, organise, etc. with an American pronunciation feels wrong. I know it's not wrong though. I'm so used to American English and I don't feel comfortable pronouncing words with British pronunciation. Thankfully my teachers haven't told me anything about my pronunciation so now, I don't feel as uncomfortable as before when I had started.
I think the accent doesn't matter that much once the propose of the language is to communicate and as you said you need to be open to a huge different kinds of accentes but to help you I specially at the beginning I think it's better to keep the focus on the accent from the place where you are living (if you are living abroad ) or the one which is better for you to understand and pronunciate otherwise it will be stressful and you will get confused most of time

This is funny: in a TV series one character said to another one: "Stop putting on a British accent..." or something like that. That meant that the second character was acting in a snobbish way. So is it a common perception that British accent is "snobbish" and American accent is rougher?
American and the british both are great, but of course British is like much obvious and natural as it is and i enjoy listening to british accent. although, i than prefer american accent.
From my hangle opinion, I am learning the accent that I love it more, American, but I am going to say that I feel that they are the same language and neither American or British are better and the most important is to use good grammar, have correct pronunciation and fluency.

In the learning English progress there is a stage in which we get to understand everything the teacher says, but the others.🤔 So you just can't tell how much I look forward to seeing you speaking in a more natural pace, because despite me being very used to your speaking and accent when it comes to listening to other native speakers on Instagram stories, British TV serie or BBC news report for instance they speak in such a pace I've never got from a teacher, moreover I would never😕 Students tend to get so hooked up to teacher's pace and rhythm that unfortunately we get badly surprised of our real comprehension of the language when talking to other native people. They don't cake about us being native or not, they just talk, talk naturally, so we endeavour to get it.😬 Having said all that, you wouldn't mind uploading a video with a more realistic speech (in terms of speed) just for us to balance our listening, would you? I might get everything you and Kate say, but watching a movie or a BBC report. You know, I don't mean to be inconvenient approaching this but I observe teachers (after a while in this activity) seem to get used to a different way of speak, something they just can't get rid of, even when they are pointed out to shift. And the thing that matters to me in the first place is grammar, whether it's British or American!
But of course, the British type is more legal and grammatically more pleasing.

I confess that I prefer North American English because I think it sounds better to understand. Otherwise I've used more British resources to study such as: cambridge dictionary and grammar and british council website. Indeed I don't know a lot about the differences between them and I get a little confused about this is British and this is North American English. By the way, I've always said 'takeway' and I've just known it's a British word like 'zebra crossing' that I've not known either. I might not say which English I've been studying because I've used different resouces and tools, but I feel more comfortable with North American pronunciation because I like the conections and flap sounds, although British one has been more important lately. I've been listening to a lot British accent because it's more important for some exams but, to tell you the truth if one day I can understand what Adele talks about I'll be so glad.
for me is very difficult speack in english, some times i think some phrase on my mind and is like fluency but when is really need i can´t find the correctly words and need to thinks too much. About the understand i think undertsand must better the british English, maybe is because i lived a couple months in England! Nice video´s they helpme in my english! Thank you!
It's really hard when the English School where you go to learn teaches you British, and then 90% of the English content you consume daily (movies, videogames, videos) are American, and which is worse, a daily American with slang; which makes you feel, as you say, frustrated by the fact that you learn a way of pronouncing and using the vocabulary but then you see different pronunciations and voc.
But just as you said, if you take advantage of that instead of letting yourself fall overwhelmed by the situation, you will reach a better English understanding.
As a non native speaker, this is very relatable. I learned American English by myself (autodidact) and I can speak it very well, but now I'm in college and my teachers speak with British English. All of my textbooks are in British English. I generally don't have any problem understanding British English but I sometimes don't feel comfortable using my American pronunciation. For example: reading words such as: centre, theatre, colour, organise, etc. with an American pronunciation feels wrong. I know it's not wrong though. I'm so used to American English and I don't feel comfortable pronouncing words with British pronunciation. Thankfully my teachers haven't told me anything about my pronunciation so now, I don't feel as uncomfortable as before when I had started.

I think the accent doesn't matter that much once the propose of the language is to communicate and as you said you need to be open to a huge different kinds of accentes but to help you I specially at the beginning I think it's better to keep the focus on the accent from the place where you are living (if you are living abroad ) or the one which is better for you to understand and pronunciate otherwise it will be stressful and you will get confused most of time
I"m used to listen to American accent, but sometimes I listen to other accents to try to understand different accents. British english is a little easy to understand.
I am a huge fan of British accent.
IMO you should learn the one you will interact with the most.
This is funny: in a TV series one character said to another one: "Stop putting on a British accent..." or something like that. That meant that the second character was acting in a snobbish way. So is it a common perception that British accent is "snobbish" and American accent is rougher?
I like the British accent because I think it's easier than American accent, but I study both.
American and the british both are great, but of course British is like much obvious and natural as it is and i enjoy listening to british accent. although, i than prefer american accent.
From my hangle opinion, I am learning the accent that I love it more, American, but I am going to say that I feel that they are the same language and neither American or British are better and the most important is to use good grammar, have correct pronunciation and fluency.
I like mix british and american English.

You know what? In the learning English progress there is a stage in which we get to understand everything the teacher says, but the others.🤔
So you just can't tell how much I look forward to seeing you speaking in a more natural pace, because despite me being very used to your speaking and accent when it comes to listening to other native speakers on Instagram stories, British TV serie or BBC news report for instance they speak in such a pace I've never got from a teacher, moreover I would never😕
Students tend to get so hooked up to teacher's pace and rhythm that unfortunately we get badly surprised of our real comprehension of the language when talking to other native people. They don't cake about us being native or not, they just talk, talk naturally, so we endeavour to get it.😬
Having said all that, you wouldn't mind uploading a video with a more realistic speech (in terms of speed) just for us to balance our listening, would you? It would be great!😃👌🏼

@@tofluency Yes, I have. I've seen the ones about travel, love and Valentine's, houses, living abroad, food, jobs etc. They are quite useful, but in my view, still far from reality.

You know, I don't mean to be inconvenient approaching this but I observe teachers (after a while in this activity) seem to get used to a different way of speak, something they just can't get rid of, even when they are pointed out to shift.
I still have this perception about online English tutors an that difficulty to handle English content.

Im American (Costa Rican and spanish speaking learning English) I can understand British English more than I can understand American English
As a european I would go with british english
If you want to improve your English quickly you have just to focus in one accent or area
