This post shares tips on how to propagate pothos in 3 easy ways. Propagating pothos is super easy to do and can be done in soil, water, or in their existing pot.
What you need for pothos propagation:
-Healthy pothos plant
-Sharp, clean shears or scissors
-Water
Vase or small jar (for water propagation
-Nursery pot (for soil propagation)
-Well-draining potting soil (for soil propagation)
*optional* rooting hormone and floral pins
Pothos plants are certainly one of the easiest houseplants to grow. Epipremnum aureum is also known as the Devil’s Ivy and adapts to a wide range of growing conditions.
In fact, they can handle less light than many other houseplants. Definitely perfect for your home or office. They look great trailing on a shelf or in a hanging basket.
One of the best benefits of pothos plants is how easy they are to propagate. You can literally grow many free plants with a single pot. This can be done with any variety of pothos too. Let’s review how to propagate pothos.
First, make sure you have a pair of clean, disinfected shears or scissors. We definitely do not want any bacteria or diseases spreading to the new pothos cuttings or the parent plant. Shears should be nice and sharp to make a clean cut.
Second, select a healthy stem with multiple nodes (where the leaf meets the stem). In fact, the healthier the stem, the higher the chances of successful rooting. Pothos grow their roots from nodes on the stem.
Third, cut just below a leaf node. Cuttings can be placed in either soil or water.

This is an excellent tutorial, thank you! I've veen propagating pothos for over 25 years and usually leave them in water perpetually. I have many hydroponic pothos in vases all over my home, some are several years old. I'd like to pot them in soil because I know they'll do much better, however I'm afraid I'll kill all of them if I do so because they have formed quite extensive water roots instead of regular roots. Do you have any good advice for doing this successfully? Should I cut off some of the really long spindly roots? Should I cut the roots off altogether and start them anew? I have well over a dozen cuttings that I've rooted, or more because I have several per vase and it's hard to tell how many are in each one, all a few to several years being grown hydroponically. Thanks in advance for your help!

What isbthe white bubble u have used for air
So I think I hurt my beautiful pothos. I had her in my office and noticed gnats so I brought her home and removed her from her soil, dug in her roots and a few gnats flew out. I continued to separate her roots and laid her out on the table outside so they would dry (huge mistake) and I sprinkled cinnamon on them because I read that would rid the gnats. I put her back together, gave her new soil, watered her and she just really limp and not happy at all.
Sorry to hear that. It may just take some time to recover from the shock of transplanting. Worst case you can put them in water until they recover. Water therapy can help plants that are suffering.
Hi..very beautiful video....please tell about the soil mixture
I use regular potting soil and then add perlite for added drainage. This particular mixture also has added coarse sand.
I have a really long stem with no leaves on it, just a bunch of nodes. I was wondering if i could just cut it off and pop it into a glass of water to make it grow some leaves. Would that work? Or could i just stick it back into the soil?
If you have a cutting with no leaves, you can still use it for propagation, but it may take longer to establish roots. Trim the cutting just below a leaf node using clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. You can root pothos cuttings in water or potting soil.
Can you take the cuttings and just replant them directly into the soil of the mother plant? I ask because I may want to play around with the pins. This was a great video!
Yes, absolutely. Follow the steps at 7:00 but just make a space in the mother plant soil.
@@moodyblooms perfect! I just wanted to make sure it was that easy!
Yes! Happy growing 🙂💚
I use to do this all the time. But haven't done it in a long time.
It is so easy to do! Thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate it.
